To all'whom t may concern Be it known that I, ISABELLE R. MGKEE, a citizen of the United' States, residin 'at Tacoma, in the county of Pierce and tate of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handle Attachments for Books, Loose-Leaf Binders, and

thel like; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,v such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in attachments for books, and loose-leaf mechanical binders, so called ringbooks and-rod books and the like, and more i particularly to handle attachments thereto and the primary object of the invention is to provide an attachment for use on books, loose-leaf mechanical binders, ring-books wand rod books and thelike, whereby the same may be readily carried from place to side elevation of a slightly modified form place and papers and articles carried therein.

Still another object of the invention resides in providing a handle attaching means which iscapable for use in connection with small and light books as well as large ones and a still further object resides in providing a meansfor securing the cover leaves of the book or case together whereby to retain the articles carried therein in close contact with the-inner faces of said cover leaves.

A still further object resides in providing van attachment which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very efficient and useful in operation.

With these and other objects in view my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specication and claims.

In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application: Figure 1 is a side" elevation of a device constructed in accordance with my invention.. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof in outspread position. Fig. 3 is a section through the device as seen on line 3-3, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a similar view as seen on line lr-4, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a of the invention, and, Fig. 6 lis a plan view thereof, partly in section, with the device in outspread position.

In describing the invention Ishall refer to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which- 1 and 2 indicate respectively the cover leaves of a book, the one in the drawing bemg of the loose-leaf type. Secured to the outer face of each cover leaf land 2 at points adjacent the outer side edges thereof are the ends of the-strap handles 3, said securing beingby means of stitching or riveting as desired and these handles pror ject beyond the side edges of the cover leaves whereby to be readily grasped so as to carry the book from place to place. It is desirable, particularly when said handle attaching means is appliedto heavy books, to provide a reinforcing means for said handles and to this end I provide the reinforcing straps 4 which partially encircle the book on the outer faces of the cover leaves thereof. These straps extending over the outer faces of the cover leaves are guided through keepers 5 which are also preferably formed of leather or straps and secured to the cover leaves by stitching or rive'ting as desired, and the ends of these reinforcingl flap is provided with a male section or stud.

When the sections 7 and 8 of the clamp are engaged one withthe other said flaps 6 will be securely retained in position over the inner face of the one coverv leaf of the book and papers and other articles carried between said cover leaves may be positioned thereunder and retained in place. I have also provided a means for securing the cover leaves together when carrying the books from place to place and to this end an additional iap 9 is secured to the outer side edge of the cover leaf opposite that carrying the flaps 6. This ieXible flap 9 has extensions or the like l0 fOI'med at the ends thereof which carry female sections of' fasteners indicated as 11. This Hap 9 with the extensions 10 thereon is ada ted to be positioned over the outer face of t ie opposite cover leaf 2 when said cover .leaves are brought together in folding the book or case, and the female sections 11 are adapted to be engaged with the stads or male sections 12 provided on the outer faceof the cover leaf 2. Vhen the sections 11 and 12 of these clasps are engaged. one with the other, the cover leaves will be retained in their proper positions with respect'to one another and all papers and other articles between the same held in placevwhile the book isbeing carried. When the cover leaves are opened or disposed in their outspread position with respect to one another, the flap 9 with the extensions 10 thereon is folded on the inner face of the section or cover leaf 1 and male sections or studs 13 are provided on this inner face to engage the sockets 1l therein at such times. This flap 9 may, therefore, be retained in its inoperative positionwith respect to the cover leaves 'of the book when said cover leaves are opened and the articles therewithin are being used. In order to readily disengage the sections of the clasps, so far as the leaves of the book and the flap 9 are concerned, a strap handle 14 is secured to the outer face of said flap 9. This obviously aids inthe removal of said flap from its engaging position and will admit of. be- `ing used' in connection with light weight articles.

In Figs. 5 and 6 I have shown a slightly modified form of the invention wherein 15 and 16 represent the cover leaves of a book formed preferably of leather, the side edges thereof being provided with the integral handle members 17. These handle members may be Aformed by slotting the cover leaves at points immediately adjacent the edges and drawing outwardly on the strips forming the outer portions of the slots therein as will appear obvious from the showing made. This particular form. of handle attachment is adapted more especially to books of the loose-leaf type'wherein metal centralv portions 18 are provided at the junction of the cover leaves of the book. In this connection I-haveprovided additional means for strengthening the cover leaves and also the handle members formed as described and to this end a Wire member 19 is provided the ends of which are hingedly engaged as indicated at 20 to the ends of the metal member 18 said wire member being looped and having the arms thereof directed somewhat diagonally across the face of the cover leaf.

These wire members 19 and'21 are arranged under the lining or in the layers of the cover leaves, so that the same are entirely hidden from view and the looped portions of the members 19 are, as stated above, entirely'covered by the handle members so that said wire members will not be at all distasteful to the eye although the same will materially strengthen 'the book or case at points receiving the greatest strain.

From the foregoing'it will be seen that I have provided a simple, inexpensive and eihcient means for 'carrying out the objects of the invention and while I have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious thatvarious changes in the form, proportion and in 'the' minor details of construction may be resorted to, within the scope of the appended claims, without departlng from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:

1. In a device of the class described, .a pair of flexible hinged together cover leaves,

handle members carried thereon at the side edges thereof, a flap carried at the outer side edge of one of said leaves, means in connection with the outer side face of the other leaf for engagement with said Hap when said leaves are folded together whereby to secure the latter in such position, and additional means on the inner face of the first mentioned leaf for engagement with said flap to secure the latter in its inoperative position when the leaues are outspread.

2. In a device of the class described, a pair of flexible hinged together cover leaves, strap handles secured to the outer faces of said leaves and projecting beyond the side edges of the same, a pair of reinforcing straps extending over the outer side faces of said leaves and engaged at their ends with the arm portions of said handle members, and guide keepers secured to the outer faces of said leaves through which said re inforcing straps extend.

In a device of the class described, a pair of flexible hinged together cover leaves, handle members carried thereon at the side edges thereof, a flap carried at the outei` side edge of one of said leaves, means in connection With the outer side face of the 'other 15 leaf for engagement with said flap when said leaves are folded together whereby to secure the latter in such position, additional means on the inner face of the first mentioned leaf for engagement with said flap to secure the latte; in its inoperative position when the leaves are outspread, and a strap secured to the outer face of the flap to form a handle therefor.
