Be it known that I, JOHN Bnnos'rnN, a subject oi the King of Sweden, and a resident ot the city oi" New York, borough oi the Bronx, in the `county oit l'lronx and State oi New York, have invented a new and improved Brush, oi which the follow ing is a i'ull, clear, and exact description.

The object ot the invention is to provide a new and improved brush arranged to permit oi readily and quickly assembling the parts and 'to allow of conveniently replacing a worn brush body by a. new one. Another object is to form a brush bodyoi an inexpensive material by using the heretofore wasted bark oit the balsa (0c/broma Myopas) 7llith these and other objects in View, the invention consists oi certain novel features oli construction as herein-fatter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims.

A practical embodiment oil the invention is represented in the accompanying draw ings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters oi reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

The brush body 10 may be made oi any suitable material, preferably, however, of layers of the prepared bark of the balsa, with the bers oi the layers extending lengthwise, as plainly indicated in Fig. l, the fibers acting similarly to the bristles now generally used in brushes employed for painting and the like. The rear or back portion 1l of the body 10 is clamped be tween two clamping plates 12 and 13 provided at the sides with flanges 14 and 15 overlapping each other and engaged by a pivot pin 16 extending between the plates from one side thereof 'to the other. By the arrangement described the plates l2 and 13 are mounted to swing so that the forward portions of the plates clampingly engage the back portion 11 of the brush body 10.

The handle 2O of the brush is provided with a head 21 made wedge shape and pushed between the rear portions o'F the clamping plates 12 and 13 so as to spread the said rear portions oit' the clamping plates ing plates 12 and 13. It will also be noticed that by the arrangement described the inward movement of the brush body 10 is limitedv as the rear edge of the bach il abats against the front edge of the head 21 of the handle 20. The lforwardedges 25 and 26 oi the clamping plates l2 and 13 are preferably curved inward, as plainly indicated in Figs. l and 2, to insure a lirm bite into the :faces of the brush body to securely hold the latter in position between the clamping plates especially the edges 25 and 2G tend to compress the brush body intermediate the ends thereof, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 2.

In order to render the barlr of the balsa serviceable for forming the brush body, it is necessary that such bark is softened by steaming the same to allow oi removing the tough outer shin and to permit of. readily splitting a sheet of a desired thickness with a view to form thinner sheets or layers superimposed to provide the brush body 10 as above explained. The brush` is especially serviceable tor use in cleaning kitchen sinks and the lil-te.

Having thus described my invention, l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

l. A brush, comprising a pair of flat clamping plates having their entire sides bent to form elongated right angular anges overlapping `each other, a pivot pin extend ing between the plates approximately midlway between their ends and through the overlapping ilanges, whereby the plates are pivoted together and the flanges at opposite sides are connected, a brush body oil straight length fibers extending between the plates in front of the pivot pin, and a handle having aflat wide wedge shaped head extend ing between the plates in rear oil the pivot pin.

2.
