Description

Aug. 25, 1959 A. KOLTVEDT BRUsH OR THE LIKE HAVING REMOVABLE HEAD Filed Nov. 6, 1957 QINVENTOR. JY19Z- ff ozi'vedi States Unite BRUSH GK THE LIKE HAVING REMOVABLE HEAD The present invention relates to brushes or the like, for example, sponge or bristle brushes, comprising a handle, a removable holder for the brush or sponge and a brush or sponge head.
The objects of the invention are to provide a means whereby a unit is presented having the usual characteristics of a regular brush, such as a paint brush, but so constructed that the unit is an assembly of a handle, a brush, and a holder whereby the brush is removably secured to the handle.
A special characteristic of the invention is a spring lock whereby the unit may be disassembled or assembled without tools.
With a device such as herein provided, instead of having to have a number of separate brushes, there can be provided merely a number of brush heads or bristle elements, with consequent convenience and saving of expense.
The word brush is used as meaning not only ordinary bristle brushes but also sponge or other desired head material. Likewise, the reference herein to paint brushes does not mean that brushes for use only in painting are intended as obviously the same invention is applicable to any desired uses.
Other obejcts and advantages will become apparent in the following specification when considered in light of the attached drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the invention shown partially broken away for convenience of illustration.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary side elevation of the invention shown partially broken away for convenience of illustration.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary vertical cross section taken along the line 3-3 of Figure 2 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary transverse cross section taken along the line 44 of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary vertical cross section taken along the line 55 of Figure 3 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the several figures, the reference numeral indicates generaly a paint brush constructed in accordance with the invention.
The paint brush 10 includes a wedge shaped shank 11 having parallel side walls 12, 13 respectively. An elongated hand-1e 14- extends upwardly from the wedge shaped shank 11 and is integrally formed therewith.
The wedge shaped shank 11 is provided with a pocket 15 opening through the side wall 12 thereof. A resilient latch 16 is secured to the wedge shaped shank 11 at the lower end of the pocket 15 by means of a securing pin 17. The resilient latch 16 has the upper end portion thereof formed into a loop 18 extending laterally therefrom for reasons to be assigned. The shank 11 is proatent 0 Patented Aug. 25, 1959' 21 vided in its lower face 19 with a transversely extending groove20 as can be seen in Figure 3.
A bristle unit 21 comprises a plurality of bristles 22 joined together at 23-adjacent their upper ends by means of a plastic or other suitable bristle mounting compound. The bristle unit 21 isprovided on the opposite side thereof with transverely extending grooves 24, ZS-arranged' in parallel relation.
A sleeve generally indicated at 26 comprises a generally rectangular panel 27 having perpendicular flanges 28, 29 formed integrally on the opposite side edges thereofa A second generally rectangular panel 30 is provided with oppositely disposed perpendicularly extending flanges 31, 32 integrally formed on the opposite side edges thereof with the flanges 31, 32 engaging over the flanges 28, 29 as can be seen in Figure 1.
An elongated pivot pin 33 extends through the flanges 28, 29 and the flanges 31, 32 pivotally securing the panel 27 to the panel 30. The flange 28 adjacent the upper edge thereof is provided with a recess 34 and the flange 31 is provided with a rectangular opening 35 overlying the recess 34- and arranged for engagement over the loop 18 as can be seen in Figure 3.
The panel 27 is provided with a flange 36 along the lower edge thereof extending toward the panel 30 and the panel 30 is provided with a flange 37 along the lower edge thereof extending toward the flange 36. The flanges 36, 37 are adapted to engage in the groooves 24, 25 respectively as can be seen in Figure 4. The pivot pin 33 engages in the transverse groove 20 to assist in aligning the sleeve 26 with the shank 11.
In attaching the bristles 21 to the handle 14 the panels 27 and 30 are pivoted to spread the flanges 36, 37 apart and the bristle unit 21 is engaged therebetween. The panels 27 and 30 are then pivoted in the opposite direction to bring the flanges 36, 37 into the grooves 24, 25 and the wedge shaped shank 11 is engaged therebetween. The loop 18 is sprung inwardly on the latch 16 to permit the sleeve 26 to engage thereover and the loop 18 projects outwardly through the rectangular opening 35 to lock the sleeve 26 on the shank 11. The wedge shaped shank 11 serves to maintain the panels 27 and 30 in spread condition and the flanges 36, 37 in tight engagement with the bristle unit 21.
Having thus described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it should be understood that numerous structural modifications and adaptations may be resorted to without departing from the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
A detachable bristle brush comprising a wedge shaped shank, a handle extending integrally from one end of said shank, said shank having a pair of side walls converging toward the end opposite said handle, said shank having a transversely extending groove formed in the end thereof opposite said handle, a bristle unit having a plurality of bristles secured together at one end, said bristle unit having transversely extending grooves formed on opposite sides thereof with said grooves arranged in equispaced parallel relation to the secured together end of said bristle unit, a pair of generally U-shaped sleeve forming members each including a generally rectangular panel and a pair of perpendicularly extending side flanges formed on the opposite edges of said panel, said panels being arranged in spaced apart relation with one pair of said flanges engaged between the other pair of said flanges, a transversely extending pin pivotally securing said flanges together, said bristle unit being releasably engaged between said sleeve forming members adjacent one end thereof, an inwardly extending end flange formed on each of said panels at said one end of said sleeve form- 2,900,654 e v r 3 ing member for engagement in the grooves on opposite sides of said bristle unit, said shank being wedged between the ends of said sleeve forming members opposite said bristle unit thus clamping the end flanges thereof in the grooves of said bristle unit with the groove in said shank engaging over said pin, and a resilient latch secured to one edge of said shank and biased outwardly therefrom, said side flanges adjacent said one edge of said shank having respectively a generally rectangular opening and a recess formed therein for registry with each other when said shank is wedged between said sleeve forming members, said resilient latch having a portion thereof releasably engaging in said recess and through said opening for locking said shank in wedged-relation between said sleeve forming members.
