Be it known that I, LAWRENCE STARR, a citizen of the United States, residing at South llilliamsport, in the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and nseiul Improvements in Neolrtie-Stitleners, oi which the following is a specification.

rI`his invention relates to a neclrtie stiffener and has tor its object to provide an open ended neclrtie of the our-in-hand type with a device which will cause it to retain its shape under all conditions of service and thereby prolong its lite and usefulness.

For a full understanding of my invention, reference should be had to the accompanying description and drawing: wherein- Figure l. isA a fragmentary plan view of a neclrtie having its facing broken away to show the stiffener inserted therein, and

By referring to the drawing by numerals it will be seen that 1 designates a four-im hand tie of ordinary construction having the usual opening Vend and having the fabric folded so as to form a facing 2 and the usual flaps 3 which overlap each other. T he sti'f iener consists of the upper transverse rod A and the lower transverse rod 5, the rod 5 being slightly larger in length than the rod 4;. The ends ot the transverse rods e and 5 are connected by the rods 6 thus forming a frame which tapers toward its upper end.

The lower trasverse rod 5 is provided with an enlarged portion 7 which is semi-circular in shape. A spring clip 8 is attached upon the lower edge oi? the transverse rod 5 so that the coil spring 9 will normally force the jaw 10 against the enlarged portion 7.

From the above description it will Vbe readily understood that this stiilener is in serted in the open end of an ordinary fourin-hand tie as is clearly shown in Fig. 1. After the stil'l'ener has been inserted in the tie it will be seen that the clip 8 will be open so as to allow the flaps 3 to be securely held between the jaw l0 and the enlarged portion 7 thereby securely holding the stiiliener within the open end oit' the tie. This stitener it will be seen will not only cause the tie to retain its desirable shape but will also prevent the tie from sliding out of the vest or coat as is usual in ties of this description. Because of the construction of the frame of the stiiiener and also the provision of the clip 8 it will be seen that the stit'fener may be inserted and removed from the open end of the tie with very little trouble to the wearer of the tie.

The above description refers to what I call the preferred form of my invention but I wish it understood that I may make such changes in construction, arrangement, and combinationoi'f parts as will fall within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is:

l. A device of the class described comprising an upper transverse rod and a lower transverse rod, rods connecting the ends oit said transverse rods, and an enlargement formed on the lower transverse rod intermediate its ends, and means provided upon said enlargement for holding said device within a tie. i

2. As a new article of manufacture, a tie stiffener comprising an upper and a lower transverse rod, said transverse rods being situated parallel to each other, said upper transverse rod being shorter than said lower transverse rod, rods connecting the ends ot said transverse rods thus forming a tapering frame, an enlargement formed on thelower transverse rod intermediate its ends, and means provided on said enlargement :for holding said stifener within the open end of a tie.

As a new article of manufacture, a tie stifl'ener comprising an upper and a lower transverse rod, said transverse rods being parallel to each other, and said upper transverse rod being shorter than said lower transverse rod, rods connecting the ends of said transverse rods thereby forming a tapered frame, and an enlargement formed on said` lower transverse rod intermediate its ends, a spring clipV mounted upon said enlarged portion of said lower transverse rod orholding said stillener within the open end oit a tie for the purpose specied.

4L. A device of the class described comprising a pair of parallel transverse rods, rods connecting the ends of said transverse rods, and mean for attaching one of said transverse rods to the edges ot' a tie within the open end thereof.
