To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Josnrrtmn RALPH, a citizen of the United States, residin at hilaywood, in the county of Cook and btate of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Hair-Curlers; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in hair curlers of the character employing resilient legs and has for its primary object the provision of means adjustably mounted on one of the legs for securing the hair in coil formation about the other leg and to hold the legs in close proximity to each other for the'purpose of form ing the curl in the hair.

another object of this invention is the provision oi a hair curler of the above stated character, which shall be simple, durable and cflicient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.

With these and other objects in view as will become moreapparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a hair curler constructed in accordance with my invention and illustrating it applied to hair,

Referring in detail to the drawing, the iuuneral 1 indicates as an entirety a hair curler consisting of a circular head. 2 having integral legs 3 and 1. The head 2 and legs 3 and 4: are of an integral construction and are constructed from resilient material. The head 2 being of circular formation and constructed of resilient material has a tendency to spread the legs 3 and 41 away from each other, The leg a adjacent the head 2 is provided with an inwardly directed oifset portion 5 adapted to be engaged by a catch 6 formedon inwardly directed offset portion 7 of the leg 3 for the purpose of holding the legs in close proximity during the nonuse of the'device. The leg 4; has secured thereon kid or similar material 8 for form ing a cushion around which the hair is adapted to be wound, the hair being first brought through the head 2 and wrapped about the cushion 8 on the leg to a point approximately adjacent the free end of said leg 4.

A clamp 9 consisting of a sleeve 10 which is slid-ably mounted on the leg 3 and prevented from sliding off of the leg by means of a knob 11 formed on the end of the leg 3 and has pivotally connected thereto clamping arms 12, which arms have compound curves, and have formed on one of their ends finger grips 13. A rod 1 1 is secured to one of the clamping arms 12 at one of its curves and slides through an opening in corresponding curve of the other arm and said rod has mounted thereon a spring 15 for the purpose of forcing the clamping ends 16 in the direction of each other.

After the hair has been wrapped about the leg 4, the clamp is then placed over the hair at the free end of the coil of hair which prevents the hair from uncurling or unwinding on the leg and also holds the leg 4 in close proximity to the leg 3 for the purpose of exerting pressure on the hair wound on the leg 4: thereby establishing or forming the curl in the hair.

While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination, and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A hair curler comprising a resilient head, legs formed on said head and adapted to be moved away from each other under the influence of the resiliency of the head and one of said legs adapted to have 7 hair wrapped about the same, and means on the other leg for gripping the hair and first named leg to prevent the hair from unwinding and to hold the legs in close proximity to each other for forming the curl in the hair.

2. A hair curler comprising a resilient head, legs formed on the head and one of said legs adapted to have hair Wound around the same, and a clamp adjustably mounted on the other leg for gripping the'encls of the hair and to hold the legs in close proximity to each other for causing them to exert pressure on the hair to form the curl.

3. A hair curler comprising a circular resilient head, legs formed on the head, padding secured to one of the legs and adapted to have hair Wound around the same, a sleeve adjustably mounted on the other leg and spring pressed clamping arms piv oted to the sleeve and adapted to grip the hair and other leg.

4. A hair curler comprising a resilient head, arms formed on said head and having offset portions formed therein adjacent the head, a hook carried by one of the offset portions and adapted to engage the other offset portion to hold the legs in closeproximity to each other, and a clamp adjustably secured to one of the legs for engaging hair Wound about the other le In testimony whereof aiiix my signature in presence of tWo Witnesses.
