Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led June 10, 1920. Serial No. 387,904.
T 0 all w wm t may concern Be it known that I, HAROLD W. HARRIS, J r., a citizen of the'United States, residing at Roanoke, in the county of Roanoke an State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag- IIolders, of which the following is a specification. Y v
This invention relates to bag holders and has special reference to devices for supporting coal bags in position'to be filled, the object being to provide a device of simple and inexpensive construction which will relieve the bag of all strain while it is being filled and thereby prolong the life of the bag.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings and will Vbe hereinafter fully described and claimed.V
In the drawings- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved bag holder showing the saine in its operative position;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; y
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
In carrying out vthe invention, employ a supporting frame consisting of an annulus 1 of metal and legs 2 secured rigidly to the said annulus and of such a height that. they will support the annulus above the ground'or the floor at a height corresponding to the usual height of coal bags. The annulus may conveniently be formed from a flatbar or strip of metal having its ends welded or otherwise permanently united and the supporting legs 2 may be of similar material and riveted or otherwise rigidly secured at their upper ends to the said annulus. The
lower ends of the supportingV legs will preferably be slightly flared outwardly, as
shown at 3, as greatest stability is thereby imparted to the device. At diametrically opposite points of the annulus or band 1, I provide the upstanding lugs or hooks 4 which as illustrated mayconveniently be short plates of bar metal riveted or otherwise rigidly secured to the band and porjecting above the sarne,'thek upper portions of these lugs being deflected slightly outwardly, as shown most clearly in Fig. 3, so n that the handles of the bag when engaged over these retainers will be effectually held.
At intervals upon the band or annulus 1, I secure the keepersv 5 which may also conveniently be short lengths of bar metal rigidly secured at their upper ends to the band. Intermediate their ends these members 5 are bent sharply inwardly, as shown at V6, and then carried downwardly and slightly outwardly, as shown at 7, the portions 6 and 7 being adapted to engage over the edge of the bag and hold themouth thereof distended as will be readily understood. The bag 8 is the usual canvas bag now generally employed in the retail delivery of coal and is of such a height that when in position within the bag holder its bottom will yrest `upon the ground or the floor. The handles 9 are engaged Vover the Patented oet. 19, 1920.k
retainers .tand the beaded hem 10 of the bag is engaged under and against the outer sides of the retainers 5, as clearly shown. The bag will thus be held open and will be supported so that it may be easily filled, and the strain upon the handles 9 is minimized inasmuch as the weight of the coal is not thrown thereon but will' be carried by the ground or the floor upon whichthe bottom of the bag rests.
construction' and may, therefore, be `manufactured Vat an extremely low cost while it My device is exceedinglyr simplein itsy mouth of the bag will be held fully disi tended so that the coal may be easily placed in the bag and when it is filled thel handles 9 may be easily lifted ofl the retainers 4: so that the filled bag may be carried to its destination. The holder is light and f may.
be easily shifted from point to point as the f occasion for its use arises.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is: f
1. A bag holder comprising a supporting frame, upstanding rigid retainers xed on said frame and projecting above the same, and rigid keepers fixed on the frame vbetween the retainers and depending belowl the plane of the retainers whereby a bag provided with handles may be ,engaged around the keepers and have its handles Vengaged over said retainers and the bag thereby supported and held distended.
2. The improved vbag holder herein de-` scribed rkand shown comprising an'annular band, supporting legs secured rigidly to ing their intermediate portions extended and depending from said band, upstanding sharply inwardly and their lower portions retainers rigidly secured to said band and deflected outwardly and downwardly from 10 projecting above the same, the upper porsaid inwardly extended intermediate portions of said retainers being deflected outtions.
wardly, and keepers Secured to the band In testimong whereof I affix my signature. and depending therefrom7 said keepers hav- HAROL W. HARRIS, Jr. [1.. s]
