CORA CUNNINGHAM, OF MARLINTON, WEST V'IItGrINIA.v
cLo'rHEsPIN BAG.
Application led July 14,
This invention relates to the class of cloth receptacles and pertains particularly to a bag designed primarily for the reception of clothes pins or other small articles.
One of the primary objectsof the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a fabric receptacle having a hingedly attached cover andineluding novel means for suspending thereceptacle by the cover or by the body of the bag.
A further object of the invention is to forth, a receptacle having a hingedly attached cover, including a novel means for securing the cover in closed position.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention will become apparent as theV fied so long as such changes or modificationsl mark no material departure from the salient features of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.
In the drawing z- Figure 1 is a rear elevational view of the bag embodying the present invention, showing the top raised; 'p
' Figure 2 is a transverse section taken upon the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a detailed perspective view of one corner connection between the bag top frame and the cover frame;
Figure 4 is a detailed plan v iew of the hanging loop forming a part of the bag top frame.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, wherein similar reference characters indicate like parts throughout the several views, the numeral 1 indicates generally the body of the bag comprising the present invention, the top thereof being indicated generally by the numeralZ. n
The ba structure 1 comprises a substantially U-s aped frame 3 which constitutes a form for the mouth thereof, which framevr comprises the elongated front or yokey por-v tion 4 and integral side leg portions 5, the
1928. Serial No. 292,782.
withl thejframe 7 o-f the top 2 inthe manner hereinafter described. The frames 3 and 7 may be formed of any suitable material such as heavy Wire or the like and the central portion 4 of the frame 3 is bent to provide a hanging loop 8 by means of which the back may be suspended from a hook or nail support.
The frame 7 of the top 2 is also of substantially U-shaped configuration, being made up of the yoke portion 9 and the side legs 10. However, the ends. of the legs 10 are joined by a bail 11 which extends inwardly over the upper surface of the top, the curved portion 12, lying between the ends of the bail and the adjoining legs 10 of the top frame7 being designed to engage over a supporting line, such for example as a clothes line, to maintain the bag in position thereon.
The legs 10 of the top frame, adjacent their point of joinder with the yoke portion 9 of this yoke frame, which yoke forms the back bar of the mouth of the completed bag, are bent to provide inwardly projecting elongated loops 13, the sides 14 of which are straight and substantially parallel.
The loops 13 are not in the same plane as the side members or legs 10 of the frame but project at a slight angle forwardly, thus also positioning the yoke bar 9 forwardly of the frame as shown in Figure 3. The upper portion 14 of each of the loops 13 extends through an eye 6 of a leg of the bag ltop frame 3 and, as is clearly shown, the
cover frame is thus permitted to swing relative to the bag top frame and when the bag is open, each of the legs 5 of the bag top frame will rest upon the portion 14 of a loop adjacent the portion to which it is attached. v i A A suitable fabric bag 15 is provided, the edge of the mouth of which is formed to provide a surrounding hem 16` through which at three sides of the bag, the portions .4 and 5 of the frame 3 pass, suitable openings being made at the back of the bag to permit the ends of the legs 5 to project therefrom. An. opening is also provided at the front edge to permit the extension from the hem .of the loop 8.
The yoke bar 9 of the cover frame 7 extends thro-ugh the hem at the rear edge of the bag and a cover fabric 16 is placed over the cover frame, this fabric being provided l with the' hems 17 along each side edge for the reception. of the portions 10 of the cover frame, the inner edge thereof being secured to the rear edge of the bag 15 or, to the hem through which the portion 9 of the cover frame passes.
The front edge of the cover fabric 1G connects the forward ends of the cover frame portions or legs 7 and intermediate the ends of this free edge, there is secured an elastic` 18, this elastic being attached atv its ends as indicatedl at 19, while in a stretched condition, thus acting when released to draw the sides of the cover fabric together and also to draw the leg portions 10 of the cover frame inwardly.
When the bag is in use, it may be suspended, as above described, from a clothes lineor similar support by engaging the bail 11, which overlies the upper surface of the top, thereover under which conditions the bag will naturally drop to open position. Vhen it is desired to close the bag, the frame 3 is swung upwardly and the legmembers 1'0 of the cover frame are spread apart against the tension of the elastic 18 to permit the bag frame to pass beyond vthe cover frame legs, after which the cover frame legs are released and the elastic acts to draw them inwardly so that they will engage under the legs 5 of the bag top frame and hold the bag in closed position.
It is, of course, obvious that a snap catch or fastener may be employed for maintaining the frames in juxtaposition where it may be desirable to provide holding means which can be operated without the use of both hands.
From the foregoing description, it will be readily seen that the herein described bag may be advantageously employed in many capacities other than for the storage of clothes pins, as for example, it will be found of great convenience on motor trips where it may' be used for carrying soap, wash cloths, and toilet articles.
