Description
Filed Aug. 15, 1952 JAMES R. H/LDEBRAND INVENTOR.
ATTORNEY United States Patent HOLDERS FOR GARBAGE CANS James R. Hildebrand, Jacksonville, Ill. Application August 15, 1952, Serial No. 304,517 1 Claim. (Cl. 248-154) This invention relates to holders for garbage cans and more particularly the type having spring means for removably retaining the cover of the garbage can in position thereon and also enabling the ready removal of the can from the holder.
An important object is to produce a simple though appreciably practical and eflicient device of portable character which will hold a garbage can securely against untimely tipping and also facilitate its maintenance in sanitary condition at all times due to its peculiar structural arrangement.
Other objects and advantages of the device will appear in the following description together with the appended claim and the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a sectional view taken vertically and centrally through the invention, the spring elements being in elevation, and the dotted lines representing a garbage can held in normal position.
Figure 2 is a perspective view setting forth generally the structural arrangement of the improved holder.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the numeral designates identically shaped and equally spaced apart frame members, supporting at their upper end the circularly shaped band member 11, while their lower portion is formed in the outwardly inclining substantially U-shaped foot 12 having the inward brace portion 13 adapted to engage and support the cross membered frame element 14 on which rests the can designated by the dotted lines in Figure 1.
It is obvious that the downwardly extending angle portion 14A of the frame element 14 engages the inner face of the frame members 10 thereby serving to brace the same as well as to further support said frame element 14.
It is here noted that two oppositely disposed frame members 12 are provided with a plurality of apertures 10A for the selective engagement of the relatively heavy cotter pins 16 thereby enabling different degrees of tension on the coil spring elements 17.
The cotter pins 16 suitably engage the inner end of the coil spring elements 17, one of said spring elements suitably engaging at its outer end a loop member 18, and
another spring element suitably engages an open hook member 19.
In the practical adaptation of the invention for use, the can as indicated by the dotted lines in Figure l is positioned in the device as shown, the loop member 18 on one of the spring elements 17 loosely but nondetachably engaging the handle of the can cover, while the open hook member 19 on the other spring element 17 detachably engages said handle of the can cover, and it is obvious that tension on the spring elements 17 may be increased or diminished at the will of the user by engaging the cotter pins 16 in lower or upper apertures respectively.
Obviously, when the open hook member 19 is disengaged from said handle, the can cover may then be readily removed from the can so that the can may be lifted from the device for emptying, while its cover remains engaged by the loop member 18 on one spring element 17. Thus, the cover is always conveniently available when the can is replaced in the device.
It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that adequate provision is made in this improved garbage can holder for insuring against the undue tipping of the can or the untimely removal of the cover thereof, as for example, by dogs.
The illustrated structure sets forth a practical adaptation of the invention, although it is to be understood as non-limiting specifically, as modification and change is possible and may be made within the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
In a holder for garbage cans, a plurality of vertically disposed frame members spaced apart and connected at their upper ends by a circular band member, the lower portion of each frame member formed in an outwardly inclined substantially U-shaped foot, horizontally disposed strap members for supporting the garbage can each attached to diametrically opposed vertically disposed frame members intermediate said circular band member and the U-shaped foot of each of said frame members, the inner end of each U-shaped foot being attached to the bottom of one of said horizontally disposed cross strap members at a point removed from the point of attachment of said strap member with the vertically disposed corresponding frame member, a series of spaced apart apertures in two oppositely disposed frame members for selective engagement with a pair of coil spring elements secured in one of said apertures, a loop member suitably attached to the outer end of one of said coil spring elements and an open hook member suitably attached to the outer end of the other of said coil spring elements, the loop member adapted for non-detachable engagement with the handle of a garbage can cover, the open hook member adapted for detachable engagement with said handle, and a disc shaped pad fixed to the bottom of each U-shaped foot.
