IMPROVEMENT IN SHIRT-BOSOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,478. dated February 4. 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. JENKs, of Somerville, of the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shirts; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawing, of which- Figure 1 is a front View, and Fig. 2 a vertica1 section, of a shirt havingits bosom applied to the body in accordance with my invention.
Theshirt A is of the kind which is closed on its front and open at back-thatis, it has an opening from the rear of the collar-band down the back of the shirt. The bosom B, made of linen or other proper material in the form shown, or otherwise properly shaped, is along its upper edge, and for about half its length at its sides or lateral edges, sewed to the shirt-front, the bosom being otherwise left unattached to or disconnected from the shirtfront. In the drawing, the bosom B is shown in the form of a shield. It is attached to the shirt-body A on the line a, b, c, d, e, f, and but from c to h and h to y it is not sewed to the shirt-body, but left loose and separate therefrom, there being an open space between the bosom and the front of the body.
This construction of the shirt, or having the bosom on its lower half or portion unattached to the shirt-front, prevents the bosom from wrinkling horizontally when the wearer may bend forward, as the bosom, being stifl', will slide more or less down on the shirt during descent of the breast, and during rise of the latter the lower half of the bosom will slide upward on the front, thus adapting itself to the motions of the hotly of the wearer without being wrinkled thereby.
I claim-- As an improved manufacture and my invention, a shirt on which the lower half or portion of the bosom is unattached t0 the shirt-front, except by the upper portion or rest of the said bosom being sewed. or connected at its edges to the front, all being substantially as shown and described.
