IMPROVEMENT IN SHIRTS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,424, dated February 4, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, OSCAR GOWING, of Boston, Suffolk county, Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Shirts, of which the following is a specification:

This invention has two objects in view in the making of shirts: First, to enable the besom of a shirt to remain always in a smooth and unwrinkled condition and free from the disagreeable fullness, when the wearer is in an inclining or stooping position, now common to such articles of apparel; second, to obtain lateral fullness and freedom of motion in the chest portion of the shirt; and my invention consists in a peculiar method of applying the bosom to the body of the garment by making it larger and fuller than the opening in the shirt-front which receives it, and folding the fullness at each side, as hereinafter explained; said invention further consisting in the peculiar pattern by which I obtain the desired fullmess.

The drawing accompanying this specification represents, in Figure 1, a perspective view of my invention as applied to the bust of a man. Fig. 2 represents a horizontal section of a shirt containing the improvement. Fig. 3 is a diagram of the patterns of the b0- som and upper part of the shirtfront which embody one feature in my invention.

In the drawing, A represents the upper portion of the front of a shirt, B being the orifice cut in such front for reception of the bosom, the said oritice, before the shirt is made up, being of somewhat greater width than the bosom in order that the fullness of the front immediately below it may be taken up by a wide fold, as is now generally the custom in the manufacture of shirts.

In proceeding to carry out .my present improvement I form upon each side of the aperture B a lapel or wing, O, the outline of the outer edge of which corresponds to the edge of the bosom D, the form of these wings and of the bosom being shown by diagram in Fig. 3 of the drawing.

In making up the shirt the edges of the bosom D and of the lapels U G are to be sewed together, by which means a fullness is obtained which permits the bosom to stand out from the body of the shirt or the chest of the wearer when the latter assumes a stooping or inclined position, and by this means preserves the smooth and unwrinkled condition of the loo som, which it retains while the wearer is in an erect position. When the wearer is in an erect position the lapels and the bosom fold down upon the shirt-front in a flat condition and present the appearance of an ordinary bosom.

In the adoption of my improvement a shirtbosom presents at all times and under all conditions a smooth and unwrinkled condition, and in addition to this feature a fullness and freedom across the wearers chest is obtained, which is otherwise very difficult to secure.

I do not limit myself to the form of the bosom shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing, as this may be varied at pleasure, but have given it herein as being the prevailing fashion, the gist of my invention being a bosom of such character as to possess a fullness or power of dlstension or expansion before stated.

Claims.

1. A shirt-bosom so constructed as to be capable of distension or expansion on the one hand and of contraction and folding upon the shirt-front on the other hand, substantially as and for purposes stated.

2. The employment of the lapels or wings O G or their equivalents as a means of attaching the bosom of a shirt to the front of the latter, substanially as and for purposes stated.

3. The patterns as shown by diagrams in Fig. 3 of the drawing.
