AXILIARY srovE-TOP.
Specication of Letters atent.
Patented Sept. 28, 1920.
Application filed February 26, 1920. Serial No. 361,521.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, Es'rELLA DEFFEN- BAUGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Berkeley, in the county of Ala- Ineda and State of California, have invented a new and useful Auxiliary Stove-Top, of which the following is a speciication.
This invention relates to stove attachments, and more particularly to an attachment to be employed in connection with gas or oil stoves.
The primary object of the invention is to provide an auxiliary top to be positioned over the usual burners of the stove, for confining the heat of the burners within the area of the auxiliary top, thus insuring the maximum amount of heat from the burners.
A further object of the invention is to utilize the heat of the burners which ordinarily escapes around the edges thereof.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device having means to support a water pipe for heating the water of a system thus utilizing the wasted heat.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the `description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawings Figure 1 illustrates a plan view of an auxiliary top constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Fig. 2 illustrates a sectional view taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the auxiliary cover forming the subject matter of the present invention includes a pair of plates 5 and 6, the plate 6, having one of its side edges bent downwardiy as at 7, the extreme end of the side edges extending upwardly as at 8 to provide a groove extending throughout the entire length of the plate 6.
The plate 5, which is associated with the plate 6 has one of its side edges turned downwardly as at 9 to provide a iange, which iiange is adapted to be positioned within the groove of the associated plate 6, whereby the plates 5 and 6 may it together.
The rear edges of the plates 5 and 6 are also turned downwardly as at 10, to provide a supporting flange while the side edges of the plates 5 and 6 extend downwardly as at' 11 to provide additional supporting flanges to support the plates 5 and 6 in spaced relation with the top of the stove to which the same are applied.
A plurality of openings 12 are formed in each of the plates, and as shown, the walls of the respective openings extend downwardly as at 13, and outwardly as at 14 to provide supporting shoulders for the lids 15, to permit the lids 15 to be readily removed or positioned over the openings at the will of the operator.
These lids 15 include a lower section 16 and an upper section 17, secured together by the means of a bolt 18 passing through registering openings provided centrally of the sections 16 and 17 the lower section 16 being provided with a plurality of ribs 19 disposed therein in any suitable manner to properly reinforceJ the lid proper.
Forming a part of the upper section 17, is a depending annular flange 20, which iiange is provided for the purpose of embracing the lower section 16, to provide a smooth edge for contacting with the depending anges of the opening.
In order that the plate may be employed for heating water, a continuous pipe 21 is provided, whichpipe 21, is coiled around the burner opening whereby the heat radiating laterally therefrom, contacts with the pipes 21 for heating the fluid passing therethrough.
In operation, a cover of this character is positioned over the usual gas stove top, the flanges 10 and 11 thereof supporting the auxiliary top above the' plane of the'upper surface of the stove top on which the device is positioned, the openings 12 of the auxiliary top overlying the burners of the gas stove.
From the foregoing it is obvious that if it becomes necessary to quickly heat or cook, it is only necessary to remove a lid 15 and place the cooking utensil within the opening, whereupon the utensil receives the direct heat of the burner.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is A separable auxiliary stove top including plates, each of said plates having its side and rear walls bent Yat right angles to form supporting flanges, one of said plates having a downwardlyT and upwardly extending 'flange 'providing a V-shaped groove, one Vof the" Walls of the opposite plate extending downwardly at an angle, and adapted to be positioned within the groove, and each of Said plates having burner openings, and sinuous 15 mately in line with said groove.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto `allixed my signa- 20 ture in the presence of two witnesses.
ESTELLA DEFFENBAUGH.
