Description

S. S. GOLDMAN.
WASHING MACHINE.
APPLICATION FILED APR.29. 1919.
Patented Sept. 28,1920.
a m w Jlu h I SAMUEL S. GOLDMAN, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
WASHING-MA HINE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept, 28,1920.
Application filed April 29, 1919. Serial No. 293,393.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL S. GOLDMAN, a citizen ofthe United States residing at the city of St. Louis, State ofMissouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in VVashing-Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being movements to impart to its suds-content and the goods to be washed a defined courseof undulated or rocking reciprocation, in the surges of which, that is at the terminals of the course, the goods are elevatedin a loosened or relatively separated condition and brought with force to breakwith the wave of the suds-content at the ends of the suds- 'box; to provide a frame and operating mechanism for the suds-box of simple, rigid, and economical construction; to provide the suds-box with pounders in the form of funnel-shaped devices over which the goods break'in a manner to facilitate the foreing of the suds-content throughthe goods; to provide means for heating the suds-content, if desired, during the operations of .the
" machine; and to improve generally upon washing machines of the type stated.
lVith the above and other objects in view, my-invention resides in the novel features of form, construction, arrangement, and combination of parts hereinafter described and afterward pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing,
Figure 1 is a plan View of a washing ma: chine constructed in accordance with and embodying my invention Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the machine, parts of the supporting-frame being broken away and the suds-box being partly shown in section;
Fig. 3, is an end elevational view of the machine, a wringer and a gear therefor'being shown in connection with the machine;
-Fig. is fragmental longitudinal sectional view of the suds-box and the clothespounders therein; and
Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view of one of the suds-boxhanger-bearings.
Referring more 1n detail to the said drawing, in which like reference characters referv to like parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates the vertically disposed corners or legs of they frame-structure," which are preferably in the form of lengths of angle-iron and which are rigidlyconnected by longitudinal rails 2 and transverse rails 3, and to which structure I preferably attach gussets, I
as at 4, to add rigidity thereto, the framestructure taking the form, as shown, of a rectangular oblong skeleton. v
To the upper pair of longitudinal rails 2 and adjacent the opposite ends of the frame, are suitably fixed bearin'gs'5 in which are removably fitted bushings 6 provided with sockets 7 arranged for the suspension of bails 8, whose upper ends have balls 9 for bearing in the sockets 7, and bypreference the bushings 6 are firmly held inposition by drift-pins or the like 10.
The bails 8 are substantially U-shaped and engage and journal at their bights in bear-' ings 11 fixed to a substantially rectangular skeleton frame or cradlelQ, as I will term it, which, by reason of said bails and bearings, may be freely oscillated or swingingly reciprocated Removably mounted upon or in the cradle- 12, and firmly retained thereupon against accidental displacement in the oscillatlons of the cradle by the upright cradle angular corner-pieces seen particularly in Fig.1, is a each end and disposed vertically thereof, is -a transverse diaphragm or partition 16 with its lower edge above the bottom of the sudsbox and its upper edge spaced from and beneath the overhanging flange 14, each of said diaphragmsor partitions having a, plurality of relatively spaced perforations, and
in each of which perforations a clothespounder, so called, in" the form preferably ley fixed on a shaft 21 mounted for rotation in bearings 22 provided on the framestructure. 23 indicates 'a'second shaft also mountedfor rotation in bearings 24 provided on the frame-structure somewhat above the bearings .for the first shaft 21. Connected atone end with one of the bails 8 for swingingly reciprocatingor oscillating the cradle 12 and its carried suds box 13, is a pitman 25, connected at its other end with a wrist-wheel 26 mounted on the shaft 23, the rotary movement of first shaft 21 being reducingly imparted to'shaft 2.3 and its carried wrist-wheel 26 by means of meshing spur-gears or the like 27 and 28- fixed, re
spectively, on the shafts 21 and 23.
For heating the suds-content of the box 13, I preferably employ a gas-burner or the like 29 mounted upon a strap-bridge 30 supported on the lower frame-rails 2, as best seen in Fig. 2, and to which burner there is suitably connected a supply-tube 31 leading from a suitable source of supply.
In the bottom of the suds-box 13 is pref erably provided a drain-opening 32, in which is removably fitted a stopper 33, whereby the emptying of the box of its suds-content may be facilitated.
In use or operation, the cradle 12 and its removably. carried suds-box 13 are rocked or oscillated as described, thereby impart ing to the contents of the suds-box a wavelike motion, which rises in surges at the ends of the-suds-box and with crests which pass under the partitions 16 and rise up the ends of the box between the end walls and the partitions to be rolled or driven toward the center of the box by the overhanging flange or top 11. It is obvious that such water action will carry the goods being washed .to the ends of the box and then, in the swell of the water, tend to relatively separate the goods, in which condition the goods will be open to receive the suds-content, then dashed against the pounders 17, where relatively broad areas of the goods are spread and held over the mouths of the funnels while the suds-content is being forced therethrough by the pressure of the water and also by the suction created by the passage of the water upwardly through the space between the end of the box and the partition. From'thence the wave continues on up the ends of the box in the space between the end wall and partition, where its crest is directed inwardly and downwardly by the flange 14 over the areas of the goods held neeaeae;
over the funnels to, first, remove such foreign matter as may have been collected therein in the movement of water there- It willbe noted that tlie suds-box, being removable, may be conveniently taken from the supporting-cradle as may be required or desired in washing operations or for repair or substitution.
I am aware that minor changes in the form, construction, arrangement, and com-- bination of the several parts of the machine may be made and substituted. .iforthose herein shown and described withoutdeparting from the nature and principle of my invention. I may add that each of the bearings 5 is provided with an oil-duct 34 for convenient lubrication, the sockets 7 serving to retain the lubricant so supplied and the sockets and their contained balls 9 providing a simple and efiicient bearing for the oscillatory bails 8. It will be obvious that the bushings 6 may be conveniently renewed whenever required. i
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters fatent is: r
A washing machine, comprising a frame, a suds-box mounted to swing in said frame, inwardly projecting flanges at the top of said suds-box, vertically disposed partitions in said suds-box adjacent to and spaced from the ends thereof and having their lower edges located above the bottom of the suds-box and their upper edges spaced from and beneath the inwardly projecting flanges at the top of the suds-box, aseries of pounders fixed to said partitions and projecting inwardly therefrom and communicating with the spaces between said partitions and the ends of the suds-box, and means for swinging saidsuds-box to surge the contents therein from end-to end to cause the sudswater to forcibly move the clothes into engagement with said partitions and the pounders thereon, a portion of'the sudswater passing under the partition and up through the passage between the partition and end of the suds-box to create a suction through said pounders.
lin testlmony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
