The present invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in` washing machines and has for one of its objectsto provide a washing machine in. which the clothes will be subjected to a squeezing action and water forced .therethrough to remove the dirt therefrom.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a washing machine having reciprocally mounted therein a `pair of concave and convexed faces provided with a plurality of perforations, and novel-means for moving said faces toward and away from each other. f
A further object of this. invention is to provide a washing machine having a wringer mounted thereon and drive connections or said wringer having means for readily reversing the direction of rotation of the wringer.
Vith the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter described and more particularly defined by the appended claims, it being understood thatl such changes in the precise embodiment of theV herein disclosed invention may be made as come within the scope of the claims.
ln the accompanying drawings, l have 1llustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my Q invention constructed according to the best mode l have so far devised for the practical application or' the principles thereof, andinwhich:

Fig. is a sectional detail view taken on line 5 5 of Fig. 2 of means for disconnecting the motor from the driving mechanism when it is ,desired to operate the machine manually.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, 10 designates a washing machine, 10 a receptacle or container proper, 11 a supporting iframe for the container, and 12 the container cover including a hinged door 13 and a` vertically extending casing casting 1a adapted to removably hold the clothes wringer 15.
Positioned within the machine 10 on opposite sides of the receptable 10 are mounted guide rods or rails 16 providing a track for arm members 17 which form part ci" opposed reciprocable wash members 19 and 20. Said arms 17 extend upwardly from the reciprocable 4members and outwardly over the upper side edges of the receptacle 10 and then downwardly to the rails 16.
The members 19 and 2O are substantially concave-d and have formed therein a plurality of perforations 20 to permit the passage therethrough of water in the operation of the machine, which will be later described. The members 19 and 20 are so disposed within the container 10 in order to present a convened surface and a concaved surface to the clothes disposed therebetween within the container in order that the best possible action may be obtained upon the clothes. As will be readily apparent, the forming of the concavedportion greatly adds to the strength of the members 19 and 2O and permits them to withstand the pressure to which they are subjected in squeezing clothes therebetween.
In order that the members 19 and 2O may be moved simultaneously in opposite directions, in other words, toward and away from each other, I provide on opposite sides of the1 receptacle 10 pairs of medially pivoted levers 21 and 21', the levers 21 of which are mounted on the opposite ends of a transverse shaft 22. As best shown in Figures 1 and 2, the arm members 17 and 18 are substantially of inverted U-shape and the lower ends of the arms 17 are connected to the levers 21 by links 23. The levers 21 are medially pivotally connected to the machine part 10 by means of links 21, and the lower ends of the said levers 21 are pivotally connectedto the levers l21 above the shaft 22 by means of links 25 so that as levers 21 are oscillated the levers 21 will also be oscillated toward and away from the levers 21.
The lower end of one of the levers 21 is provided with an opening 26 through which loosely extends al pitman rod 27. The pitman 27 has its other end pivotally connected with the crank arm 28 carried by a driven shaft 29 having a suitable worm wheel connection 29 with a drive motor 30. The end ofthe pitman 27 passing through the arm 28has mounted thereon suitable springs 81 engaging the faces of said arm and abutting against suitable washers or stops carried by the pitmans, whereby said springs will be compressed should the carrier connected Vtherewith encounter any obstacle .which would prevent its movement, thus removing any danger of injury to the machine.
Thus it will be readily apparent that upon the oscillation of the pitman 27 by means of its crank 28, the connected parts will be moved back and forth and the members 19 and 2O moving toward and away from each other will subject the clothes therebetween to a. squeezing orjpressing action and at the same time forcing the water therethrough in streams to thoroughly cleanse the same.
The shaft 29 extends longitudinally of the machine and at its end opposite to the motor has a bevel gear connection 31 with a vertically extending shaft 82, upon the upper end of which is swingingly mounted the casing casting 14. The wringer is carried by said casting 14 and has a. bevel gear connection 33 with the vertical shaft 32. A clutch 34 working in conjunction with the gears 83 provides for stopping or reversing the direction of rotation of the wringer.
The crank member 28 is formed with a clutch face 28 and the shaft 29 is provided with a complementary clutch member 29 so that when it is desired to disconnect the mo tor from the washing mechanism it is only necessary to swing the crank member outwardly. An operating arm 35 is mounted on one end of the shaft 22 to provide for the manual operation of the machine.
From the foregoing descriptionit will be seen that the washing machine is of very simple construction and is well adapted for the purpose described.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A washing machine of the class described comprising a container having opposite alined longitudinally extending rods near their top edges to form guideways, a perforated member disposed in the container and connected with said rods, and means connected with said perforated member to reciprocate said perforated member within the container.
2. A washing machine of the class described comprising a container having alined longitudinally extending guide rods adjacent its opposed side walls near their top edges to form guideways, arm members tracking on saidk guideways, a perfo rated member disposed in the container and connected with the arm members, a pitman having one end resiliently secured to one of the arms and means for oscillating said pitman.
3. A washing machine of the class described comprising a container, a pair of opposed longitudinally extending guide rods adjacent the side walls of the container near each end, the guide rods being disposed on the same horizontal plane, lever members disposed extei'iorn; of the Vcontainer adjacent the guide rods, arm members.slidably mounted on the guide rods and connected at one end to the lever members, a perforated member movably supported in said container .by and connected to the arm members, and
means for moving said arm members to reciprocate said perforated members.
Li. A washing machine of the class described comprising a container, a pair of opposed longitudinally extending guide rods positioned adjacent the side walls of the container near each end, the guide rods being disposed on tliesame horizontal plane, arm members disposed eXteriorly of the container adjacent the guide rods, pairs of arm members slidably mounted on the guide rods, lever members fulcrumed outside of the container Yand connected to the arm members, a perforated member movably supported in said container by each pair of arm members, a medially pivoted lever carried by one side wall of the container, means connecting one end of the lever to one arm member of one pair, means connecting another portion of the lever to one arm member of the other pair of arm members, and means for reciprocating one pair of arm members whereby said perforated members will be reciprocated towards and away from each other.
5. A washing machine, comprising a support, a container carried thereby, guide rods mounted on the support on opposite 'sides of the container, pairs of aum members slidably mounted on the rods and extending over the upper edge of and into the container, wash members positioned within the container and connected to the arm inembers, levers fulcrumed on the support and connected to the pairs of arm members, links connecting the levers'together, and means for oscillating one of the levers.
6. A washing machine, comprising a support, a container carried thereby, guide rods mounted on the support on opposite sides of the container, pairs of arm members slidably mounted on the rods and extending over the upper edge of and into the container, wash members positioned within the container and connected to the arm inem-- bers, levers ulcrumed on the support and connected to the pairs ot arm members, links connecting the levers together, and a yielding means for oscillating one of the levers.
7. A Washing machine, comprising a support, a container carried thereby, guide rods mounted on the support on opposite sides of the container, pairs of arm members slidably mounted on the rods and extending over the upper edge of and into the container, perforated concave and convex Wash members positioned within the container and rigidly connected to the arm members, levers tulcrumed on the support and connected to the pairs of arm members, links connecting the levers together so that they will reciprocate the Wash members towards and away from each other, and means for oscillating one of the levers.
8. A Washing machine, comprising a support, a container carried thereby, guide rods mounted on the support on opposite sides of the container, pairs of arm members slidably mounted on the rods and extending over the upper edge of and into the container, perforated concave and convex Wash members positioned Within the container and rigidly connected to the arm members, levers ulcrumed on the support and connected to the pairs of arm members, links connecting the levers together so that the y Will reciprocate the Wash members towards and away from each other, and a yielding means for oscillating one ci the levers.
