UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY J. SKINNER, OF BRADFORD, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO LUGIUS W. GODFREY, OF SAME PLACE.
WASHING-MACHINE'.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,163, dated May 31, 18s1.
Application filed December 24, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY J.SKINNER, a citizen of the United States, residing in Bradford, in the county of McKean and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain vnew and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
rIhe object of my invention is to provide a convenient and eicient means for washing ro clothes or othermaterials, in large or small quantities, without entanglin g or winding the pieces together, or in any way tearing or injuring them; and the invention consists of two perforated cases for holding the materials to be washed, each case having a suitable cover, a corrugated portion on its inner side, and a crank and connecting-rod, the whole being combined with asuitable water-holding tank or vessel, and arranged so that both of the cases 2o receive an oscillating movement while operating by means ofa single crank-pin, and so that while one case is at an incline, or in the act of throwing the clothes to its opposite side, the other is in a horizontal position, as will be to the drawings,' in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation; Fig. 2, a vertical longitudinal section through line X X, Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a plan or top view.
3o A represents the tub or water-holding vessel. It is provided with two curved waterchanibers, a a', (see Fig. 2,) and two washingcases, B B', arranged to rock or oscillate while in operation on bearings b b by means of the cranks or arms c o and eonnectingrods d d, which are connected to a crank-pin, C, on the crank-disk D', in the usual way. (See Fig. l.) The crank-disk D is rigidly fastened to a shaft, D', arranged below the vessel A in suit-able 4o hearings or boxes, E. (See Fig. 2.) At the other end of the shaft, opposite the disk D, is fastened a spur-wheel, E', which gears into a pinion, F, on the driving-shaft F'.
G Gr represent, respectively, a tight and The washing-cases B B' are provided with covers e, the usual handles, e', and perforations f, arranged in any well-known way. The i11- ner sides of each case are provided with a cor- 5o rugated surface, H, for the purpose of holding the clothes or other articles to he washed in the rising side of the case before they dropto the descending side. The water-vesse1 or tub A is also provided with corrugations or projections H, so as to prevent the water from being thrown out by the rocking action of the eases B B'.
It will he noticed that bothof the cases do not move exactly alike, so that while the case B is inclined, as shown, the other ease is in 6o a horizontal position, and so that while the clothes are being lifted up at one side of one ease they are being thrown down to one side of the opposite case, thereby equalizing the power required to drive them, so .that they Work easier and more steady than if both cases lifted and moved the clothes at the same time.
The opeiation of the invention, being simple, will be easily understood without further ex- 7o planation.
I claim- 1. The tub or water-holding vessel A, hav ing the curved chambers a a', the perforated washingcases B B', set in suitable bearings, 75 and provided with cranks c c', in combination with the connecting-rods d d', crank-pin C, and crank D, connected to the driving mechanism, substantially as Iand for the purposes set forth.
2. A washing-machine consisting of the tub 8o A, perforated washing-cases B B, cranks c c', and connecting-rods d d', connected to the crank-pin and crank, substantially as specified, so that both washiug-cases receive their movements from a single crank-pin, as and for the 85, purposes described.
3. .The cranks c c', connected to the cases B B', substantially as specified and shown, in combination with the connecting-rods d d', crank-pin C, crank D, and crank-shaft D', 9c whereby the perforated washing-cases receive different movements, so that when one oase is in a horizontal position the other is in an inclined position, as and for the purposes dcscribed.
