CHARLES GARVER, OF FORT WAYNE, INDIANA.
WASHING- MACHINE.
SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 733,182, dated July '7, 1903.
Application filed April 9,1903. Serial No. 151,760. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that LGHARLEs GARvER,a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Wayne, in the county of Allen and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing Machines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in washing-machines, and the object thereof is to eifect a rocking movement of the suds vessel and at the same time drive the rubbingrolls in the bottom thereof. This object is accomplished by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the driving mechanism. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the suds vessel; and Fig. 3 is a plan of the suds vessel, partly cut away to show the interior.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and, referring now to the same, A is a rectangular suds vessel, and B is a supportingbase. The said suds vessel has trunnions 0 extending laterally from its lower middle portion, which rest in the top of the supporting-base B, and the said suds vessel is adapted to rock (or oscillate) thereon. At
one end of the said suds vessel is a sprocket wheel D, mounted upon a projecting stud F, which is rigidly fixed upon the side of said vessel, and a connecting-rod E is pivotally attached at one of its ends to an arm of the sprocket-wheel D at a point eccentric of the center of said wheel, and the other end of said connecting-rod is pivotally secured to the foot of the supporting-base B at a point beneath said wheel.
A series of lateral rubbing-rolls M are rotatively mounted in the lower part of the vessel A and are fluted to afford a rubbing-surface, and they also have annular grooves N made therein. A number of transverse slats P are fixed in the vessel at points intervening the said rolls, and a series of projecting fingers O are attached to said slats and extend into said grooves to prevent clothes con series of sprocket-wheels K K, whereby all of said sprocket-wheels are driven when the gear G is actuated. It is obvious that when said wheels are driven the rolls M will revolve in their bearings within the vessel and the vessel will oscillate upon its trunnions because of the peculiar arrangement of the connecting-rod E and sprocket-wheel D.
In the operation of this invention a quan tity of washing fluid is placed in the vessel with the clothes to be Washed, and when the machine is in motion the fluid flows alternately from one end of the vessel to the other and carries the clothes over the revolving rubbing-rolls M, which thereby become washed.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a washing-machine, a supporting-base; a suds vessel having trunnions engaged in said base and supporting said vessel thereon; the sprocket-wheel D mounted upon a stud which extends from the side of said vessel near one of its ends; a connecting-rod eccentrically connected at one of its ends with said sprocket-wheel and at its other end with the foot of said base at a point beneath said sprocketwheel; a series of rubbingrolls ranging laterally within the vessel, and having sprocket-wheels K K connected respectively therewith external of said vessel; a series of annular grooves in said rolls; a series of fingers projecting into said grooves and secured in said vessel at points intervening said rolls; a sprocket-chain trained over the sprocket wheel D and engaging the said sprocket-wheels K K; and means to drive the said sprocket-chain.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES GARVER.
