ANDREW G. ZIMMERMAN, OF PLYMOUTH, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO HUGO F. REIN'I-IOLD, OF PLYMOUTH, WISCONSIN.
WASHING-MACHINE.
Application filed December 6, 1915.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ANDREW G. ZIMMER- MAN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Plymouth, in the county of Sheboygan and State of Wisconsin, have invented eertain new and useful Improvements in lVashing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
The present invention is directed to new and useful improvements in washing machines, particularly of that type including a reciprocable agitator member.
It is primarily the object of the present invention. to provide a means associated with such types of washing machines for procuring a suction of water in the machine independently of the usual agitation caused by the dasher member whereby upon operation, the clothes Will be agitated and a current of water simultaneously sucked through such clothes to effect a thorough cleansing.
A further object resides in the provision of an exceedingly compact and readily operated structure whereby the above operations may be procured.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention resides more particularly in the novel combination, arrangement and formation of parts more particularly hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a washing machine constructed in accordance with the present invention, this view being taken on the line 1-1 of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken through the operating mechanism and showing the body of the machine in plan, this view being taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, there is provided a cylindrical body or tub which has an angular fixed top portion 7, to which is hinged the dasher carrying top section 8. A pair of standards 9 are provided on the section 8 and coact to journally support a shaft 10 from which depends a fixed arm 11, carrying an arcuate gear rack 12, which meshes with a gear segment 13 fixed on a shaft 141 which extends through and is journaled in the top section 8 and which carries the agitator blade 15. This agitator blade is preferably of the usual construction, and is splined on the shaft whereby it may slide Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 65,230.
vertically to accommodate different sized batches of clothes.
Depending from the cover section 8 at diametrically opposite portions are a pair of piston cylinders 16 which have their lower ends closed by a foraminous plate 17, and which have their side walls cut away at 18 at their upper ends to permit free circulation of fluid in the cylinder. Slidable in each of these cylinders is a piston 19, carried on a stem 20, which projects through the top of the casing and has pivoted to its upper end a link 21, pivotally connected to a respective end of a walking beam 22, fixed on the shaft 10.
Thus as the agitator 15 is reciprocated the pistons will be simultaneously actuated to cause a suction of water alternately therebetween whereby at the time the clothes are agitated, a current of water is also forced there through to effect an exceedingly efficient cleansing. The means for actuating the above mechanism preferably comprises a link 23, pi votally connected to the arm 11 and to a handle lever 24 which has its lower end pivoted at 25 to the bottom of the tub, and its upper end extended and terminating in a handle 26, although it will be understood that any desired means may be employed to procure a reciprocal movement of the arm 11 without departing in any manner from the spirit of the invention. The pistons may be of any desired type and may or may not be provided with valve controlled openings whereby desired suction of water may be obtained.
I claim.
1. A washing machine comprising a body, a cover hinged to the body, a pair of vertical cylinders in the body, a shaft carried transversely on the cover between the axes of the cylinders, a walking beam on the shaft, pistons in the cylinders connected with the Walking beam, an arm depending from the walking beam, an agitator shaft passed through the cover, a gear connection between said link and the agitator, shaft, an operating lever pivoted to the lower body portion, and a link pivoted to the first named link and to the intermediate portion of the lever, the plane of pivotal movement of the link and lever lying at right angles to the pivotal axis of the cover.
2. A washing machine comprising a body, a cover for the body, cylinders depending I have hereunto set my hand at Plymouth, in the county of Sheboygan and State of WVisconsin, in the presence of two Witnesses. 10

from the cover, an agitator member including a shaft journaled in the cover, a gear connection between the first shaft and agitator shaft, a lever connection between the first shaft and the pistons, and means for Witnesses: oscillating the said first shaft.
