CHARLES DU MQllTD, OF CEDAR FALLS,IOWA.
ACTUATING MEANS FOR WASHING-MACHINES.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES M. DU MoND, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Cedar Falls, Blackhawk county, Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Actuating Means for lv ashing-ll lachines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in actuating means for washing-machines, and the object of my improvement is to furnish gearing and flexible connections for the ac tuating shafts thereof, which shall be easy in operation as well as operable whether the cover of the tub be raised or lowered.
This object I have accomplished by the means which are hereinafter described and claimed, and which are'illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is an elevation of my improved washing-machine, with parts broken away to thereby better disclose the interior structures. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of said machine. Fig. 3 is an elevation of said machine, taken at an angle of ninety degrees to the elevation shown in Fig. l, and hav ing parts broken away. Fig. 4 is a detail elevation of part of the actuating-means for the plunger-head, taken on the section-line a-b of said Fig. 2.
Similar numerals of reference denote corresponding .parts throughout the several views.
My improved washing-machine has its tub 1 mounted on legs, and has a swinging cover 2 for its open top, mounted on hinges 39. The cover 2 is centrally vertically orificed to receive the tubular bearing 5 depending from a base-plate 6 secured upon the top of said cover, and a vertical reciprocatory rock-shaft 3, having a plungerhead a on its lower end within said tub, is seated in said tubular bearing 5 to project above the base-plate 6. The base-plate 6 has integral spaced standards 7 and 8 provided with alined bearings 19 and 20, respectively, for a rotary horizontal shaft 9, the latter having a crank 18 mounted on its end adjacent to the shaft 3, and said crank havlng a forked crank-pin 22 mounted rotatably thereon.
The numeral 11 denotes a block mounted fixedly on the upper end of the shaft 3, and like arms 12 have their upper ends pivoted at 13 to opposite ends of said block, depending thence and having their other ends plv- Spccification of Letters Patent.

Application filed August 2, 1915. Serial No. 43,161.
oted to opposite ends of a link 21, the link havlng a middle projection received between the forks of said crank-pin 22 and pivoted thereto on a pintle 23. On the other or outer end of the horizontal shaft 9 is fixed-a gearwheel 24 in mesh with a larger gear-wheel 25, the latter rotatably mounted on a studshaft of the plate 6 on said cover 2.
An independent casting 27 is fixed on the tub 1 and has a stud-shaft 38 on which is rotatably mounted the coaXially connected fly-wheel 28 and small pinion 26,.the latter being in mesh withthe gear-wheel 25, and the axis of said fly-wheel and pinion pro-' longed being coincident and alined with the axis of the cover-hinges 39, whereby, when the cover is swung open, the gear-wheel 25 rldes upon said pinion without'unmeshing therefrom, and permitting continued actuation of the said mechanism without need for starting it up again when the cover is lowered. Any desired source of power may be operatively connected to said mechanism to drive same, but I have shown in the drawings means for manually actuating it. This means comprises a hand-lever 31 seated in a socket 30, the latter mounted to rock on a stud-shaft 29 projecting from said casting 27. The socket 31 has an integral lug 32. A connecting-rod 34 has one end bifurcated and pivoted on said lug, while its other end is curved downwardly and pivoted on a crank-pin 35 on said gear-wheel 25. When said hand-lever is oscillated to and fro, its pitman 34 rotates the gear-wheel 25, which in turn, rotates the pinion 26 and the gearwheel 24 at different rotational speeds. The shaft 9, by means of the flexible connectingmeans to the shaft 3, simultaneously rocks and reciprocates the latter to impart like movements to its plunger-head f within the tub l. The flexible connection for said shafts is simple, inexpensive, strong, and of easy operation.
Having described my invention, what I claim. as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. The combination with a support and a body hinged thereto, of a reciprocatory rock-shaft mounted in said body, a rotatable shaft mounted on said body at an angle to the other shaft, and a movable j oint-connection between said shafts, comprising a crank on the second-mentioned shaft, arms pivoted to the first-mentioned shaft, a bifurcated crank-pin rotatably mounted on said crank, and a link pivotally connected between and to the bifurcations of thecrankbody hinged thereto, of a reciprocatory rock-shaft mounted in said body, a rotatable shaft mounted on said body at an angle to the first-mentioned shaft, a gear-Wheel mounted on the second-mentioned shaft, another gear wheel in mesh therewith and also mounted on said body, a coaXially connected fly-wheel and pinion mounted on said support with their axis continued in line with the hinge-connection of said body, and a movable joint connection between shafts, comprising a crank on one end of the second-mentioned shaft, a bifurcated crankpin rotatably mounted on said crank, arms pivoted to opposite sides of the upper end of the first-mentioned shaft to depend swingingly therefrom, and a link pivotally connected to and between the bifurcations of said crank-pin and also pivotally connected to and between the lower ends of said arms 3. In combination, a reciprocatory rockshaft, a rotatable crank whose axis is losaid r cated at an angle to the axis of the rockshaft," and operative connections between the crank and rock-shaft comprising an element pivoted to the crank, an element pivotally connected to the rock-shaft to swing only to and from the axis of the latter from and to the crank, and a linking-connection pivotally connected to and between said swinging element and said crank adapted to simultaneously rock and reciprocate said rock shaft.
4. In combination, a reciprccatory rockshaft, a rotatable crank, an element pivoted to and depending from said shaft to swing in a plane intersecting the axis of the rock shaft, and linking connections between the said element and said crank, operable to cause the element to simultaneously swing to and fro and reciprocate while simultaneously rocking said shaft to and fro and reciprocating it.
