GEARING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
. Patented Sept. 5, 1916.
Application filed December 23, 1915. Serial No. 68,326.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. SARGENT, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Gearing, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to gearing for imparting both an axial and rocking movement to a shaft for operating a mechanism, and the object is to provide a simple and eflicient gearing for producing this operation.
In the accompanying drawing, in which I have illustrated the invention: Figure 1 is a plan view of the gearing, Fig. 2 is an elevation, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view illustrating the arrangement of the parts for. imparting an axial and rocking movement to the shaft.
The invention is illustrated applied to a washing machine for operating the shaft which operates the washing mechanism. In the embodiment illustrated the entire operating mechanism is mounted on the hinged cover 1 of the machine. The washing mechanism is operated by a vertical shaft 2, which is mounted for both axial and rocking movement in bearings 3 in a frame 4 attached to the cover 1 of the machine.
Axial movement is imparted to the shaft 2 by a shaft 5 revolubly journaled in bearings 6 and having a crank 7 which carries a roller 8 operatively mounted in a slotted block 9 which is provided with two arms having holes therein through which the shaft 2 extends. A beveled pinion 10 is attached to the shaft 2 between the arms of the block 9 and prevents the block from moving longitudinally on the shaft, so that when the shaft 5 is revolved the shaft 2 will be reciprocated axially. As shown, the shaft 5 has a large gear wheel 11 attached on its outer end meshing with a pinion 12 on a short shaft 13. The balance wheel 14: is also attached to the shaft 13, and serves as an aid in driving the mechanism. A pivoted lever 14 is connected with the large gear wheel 11 by a link 15, so that oscillation of the lever will operate the shaft 5 and impart axial reciprocating movement to the shaft 2.
The mechanism for rocking the shaft 2 as an incident to its axial reciprocation includes a pinion 16 supported on a projection 4 '55 17 from one of the arms of the block 9 and having a series of beveled teeth meshing with the beveled pinion 10, and having a peripheral series of teeth meshing with a fixed rack 18. Thus the pinion 16 will be revolved by axial movement of the shaft 2 in either direction, and said pinion 16 will, in turn, impart alternating rotary movement to the shaft 2 as an incident to axial movement of said shaft in opposite, directions.
I claim:
1. The combination with a support, a shaft mounted in said support, and mechanism for moving said shaft axially in opposite directions, of a pinion on said shaft, an additional pinion meshing with said firstmentioned pinion, and a fixed rack meshing with said additional pinion.
2. The combination with a support, a shaft mounted in said support, an actuating shaft, and means whereby said first-mentioned shaft will be moved axially in opposite directions by the continuous rotation of said actuating shaft in one direction, of a pinion fixed on said first-mentioned shaft, a second pinion meshing with it, and a fixed rack meshing with said second pinion.
3. The combination with a support, bearings carried by said support, a shaft mounted in said bearings, and mechanism for moving said shaft axially in said bearings, of a rack parallel with said shaft, a pinion supported by said shaft and meshing with said rack, and a second pinion fixed on said shaft and meshing with said first-mentioned pinion.
4. The combination with an axially movable rock shaft, and manually operable mechanism for moving said shaft axially, of a pinion attached to said shaft, a fixed rack, and mechanism carried by said shaft and controlled by said rack for driving said pinion.
5. Gearing comprising an axially movable shaft, mechanism for actuating said shaft axially, a rack. parallel with said shaft,
-a pinion carried by said shaft meshing with said rack, and a pinion fixed on said shaft meshing with the pinion which meshes with said rack.
6. Gearing comprising an axially movable shaft, mechanism for moving said shaft axially in opposite directions, a pinion fixed on said shaft, a rack parallel with said shaft, a support on said shaft, and a pinion carried by said support meshing with said rack and with the first-mentioned pinion whereby said shaft will be rocked as an incident to its axial movement in opposite directions.
7. The combination of a support, a shaft mounted in said support, a block through which said shaft extends, a pinion attached to said shaft, and preventing movement of said block longitudinally of said shaft, an actuating shaft connected with said block for moving said first-named shaft vertically, a pinion supported by said block meshing with the pinion on the shaft, and a fixed rack meshing with said secondmentioned pinion.
8. The combination with a support, a shaft mounted in said support for vertical and rocking movements, an actuating shaft and means whereby the first-mentioned shaft will be moved axially in opposite directions by the continuous rotation of said actuating shaft in one direction, of a pinion fixed on said first-mentioned shaft, an additional pinion meshing with it, and a fixed rack meshing with said additional pinion and imparting alternating rotary movement to said pinions and said first-mentioned shaft as an incident to the axial movement of said shaft in opposite directions.
