OPERATING MECHANISM FOR IJVASI-IING-MACHINES.
To all whom tt may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN EDnNs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Davenport, in the county of Scott and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and use-- ful Improvements in Operating Mechanism for vWashing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in mechanism for operating washing machines wherein the beater within the tub or receptacle is given a rotary reciprocating motion and more particularly to a high speed mechanism operating through a fly wheel to diminish the work of the operator after the parts have been started in motion.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings illustrating the invention z-F igure 1 is a view in side elevation of a washing machine provided with operating mechanism embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-sectional view taken upon line 2-2 of F ig. 1.
In the drawings, 5 designates a washing machine tub of the usual form mounted upon supporting legs 6, 6 and provided with a hinged lid 7. Mounted upon said lid 7 is a base plate 8 provided at its inner end with a vertically arranged bearing 9 which eX- tends downwardly through the lid and in which is rotatively supported an operating shaft 10. Said operating shaft depends into the tub 5 and has therein secured to it an agitator 11 of any usual form. Upon the upper end of the operating shaft 10 is mounted an operating gear 12 in mesh with a segmental gear 13. Said segmental gear is secured to the inner end of a horizontally arranged rock-shaft 14 journaled in the upper ends of vertical bracket arms 15, 15 which are formed upon and rise from the base-plate 3. At the outer end of said rockshaft 14 is mounted a socketed member 16 adapted to receive an operating hand-lever 17 by means of which said rock-shaft is operated to give rotary reciprocating movement to the operating shaft 10.

tally arranged fly-wheel 2O operatively connected with the rock-shaft 14 in the manner hereinafter described. As shown in the drawings, said fly-wheel 20 is rotatively supported upon a vertically arranged stubshaft 21 carried at the lower end of a supporting bracket 22 depending from the bottom of the tub 5. The hub 25 of the flywheel is provided at its upper end with a bevel pinion 30 and at its lower end rests on Aball bearings 26, 26 supported upon a collar 27 pinned to the lower end of the stub shaft 21. 32 indicates a large bevel gear which is rotatively supported on a horizontally arranged stub-shaft 33 carried by said bracket 22 in position to mesh with said beveled pinion 30.
To the bottom of the tub 5 is secured a bracket 40 in which is journaled a horizontally arranged rock-shaft 41. A rock-arm 42, keyed to the rock-shaft l41, is operatively connected to the gear 32 by means of a pitman 43. At the outer end of said rockshaft 41 is secured a rock-arm 44 which is connected by means of a vertically arranged link 45 with a rock-arm 46 mounted near the outer end of the rock-shaft 14.
As shown in the drawings, the rock-shaft 14 is arranged parallel with the pins of the hinges on the lid 7 and with the rock-shaft 41, thus permitting the lid of the tub to be raised without disconnecting any of the operating parts.
In the operation of the machine the rocking motion of the hand-lever 17 will be translated into a rotary reciprocating motion of the agitator 11 through the rockshaft 14, the segmental gear 13 and the operating gear 14, and into a continuous rotary motion of the fly-wheel 20, by means of the rock-arm 46, the link 45, the rock-shaft 41, the pitman 43 and the bevel-gear 32.
As will be seen from this construction there can be employed a relatively large iiywheel inasmuch as said Hy-wheel is mounted below the body of the tub and is out of the way of the operator. Moreover, the Hywheel being mounted upon ball bearings will require but little power to continue the movement of the same when once started in motion and its momentum will carry the operating-shaft 10 past its points of reversal without appreciable jerk or jar upon the operating hand-lever 17.
The apparatus illustrated may be modified in various details without departing from the spirit of my invention, and it is to be understood that my invention is not limited to the specific construction shown in the accompanying drawings except as the same may be set forth in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention l. Operating mechanism for a washing machine and the like comprising, in combination with a body, an operating shaft, an operating gear secured to said operating shaft, a segmental gear in mesh with said operating gear, a rock-shaft to which said segmental gear is secured, a rocking handlever carried by said rock-shaft, a fly-wheel located below said body, a second rock-shaft operatively connected with said ily-wheel to continuously rotate said iy-wheel, and operating connections between said first and second named rock-shafts.
2. @perating mechanism for a washing machine and the like comprising, in combination with a body an operating shaft, an operating gear secured to said operating shaft, a segmental gear in mesh with said operating gear, a rock-shaft upon which said segmental gear is keyed, a rocking hand-lever carried by said rock-shaft, a fly-wheel located beneath said body, a gear adapted to operate said fly-wheel, a second rock-shaft operatively connected with and adapted to continuously rotate said gear wheel, and operating connections between said iirst and second named rock-shafts.

Operating mechanism for a washing machine and the like comprising, in combination a body, an operating shaft, an operating gear secured to said operating shaft, a segmental gear in mesh with said operating gear, a horizontally arranged rock-shaft upon the inner end of which said segmental gear is mounted, a rocking hand-lever attached to said rock-shaft, a rock-arm carried by said rock-shaft near the outer end thereof, a fly-wheel located beneath said body, a pinion on the fly-wheel hub, a gear meshing with the pinion on said fly-wheel hub, a second rock-shaft located beneath said body, a rock-arm on the inner end of said rock-shaft, a pitman connecting said rockarm with said gear, a crank-arm on the outer end of said second named rock-shaft, and a link pivotally connected at its opposite ends with the crank-arms at the outer ends of the first and second named rockshafts.

The combination of an operating shaft capable of rotary reciprocating motion, an operating gear thereon, a rocking segmental gear in mesh with said operating gear, a rock-shaft upon which said segmental gear is carried, a rocking hand-lever attached to said rock-shaft, a fly-wheel, a second rockshaft operatively connected with said flywheel adapted to continuously rotate said fly-wheel, and operating connections between said first and second named rock-shafts.
7. Operating mechanism for washing machines and the like comprising, in combination, a body, an operating shaft, a rock-shaft connected with said operating shaft, a support for said operating shaft and said rockshaft mounted upon the top of the body and adapted to have swinging movement thereon, a fly-wheel located below said body, and operating connections between said rockshaft and said tiy-wheel, said connections being so arranged that the swinging support for said operating and rock-shafts may be swung vertically upward without disconnecting any of the operating parts.
