To all whom it may concern in Be it known that I, VILLIAM' H. Vo ss, a citizen of the United States,and a resident of Davenport, in the county of Scott and State of Iowa, have invented certa n new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Movements for Washing-Machines, of which the following is a clear, full, and exact description.
My invention relates to mechamsm for operating washing machines, and particularly those employing a rotary reciprocal agitator in the tub.
The object of my invention is to dispense with the fly-wheel usually present in this class of washing machines, and to provide instead simple and effective means for supplying a momentum that greatly assists in operating the machine, substantially as hereinafter fully described and as particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a side elevation of a washing machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail view showing the gearing of the machine on a larger scale.
Referring to the drawings A represents a suitable tub supported on legs a, a, and B the lid or cover for closing the same, which is hinged to a segmental strip secured to the upper edge of the tub in the usual manner. Secured to the center of the cover is a suitable metal frame, 6, that has bearings for the agitator-shaft C, which latter extends down into the tub a suitable distance and has an agitator c of the usual COIlStI'llClJlOIll on its pendent end. The upper end of this agitator shaft extends above its bearings and: is provided with a beveled gear D, which is engaged by a corresponding beveled gear E, on the adjacent end of a shaft (Z whose axis is substantially at right angles to the agitator shaft, and is journaled in a post lug permits the rack-bar H'to have a more or less rocking motion as 1t 1s I'GOIPIOCLtGd which latter c'onsists'ofa vertically disposed lever I, which is fulcrumed between thelugs projecting from a plate 6 screwed or otherwise secured to the side of the tub. The up- ,per end of this lever ektends a suitable dis-' tance above the tub, and is provided with a handlewith which, to work it back and forth,
and at a point intersected by the plane of thepitch line of the rack teeth in engagement with the spur-wheel said lever has a pivotal lug f projecting therefrom toward the agitator-shaft to which the adjacent end of the rack-bar is pivoted. By providing the engaging end of the rack-bar with hookshaped bifurcations, the connection between said rack-bar and lever can be disjointed by simply removing the bolt connecting the same. W hen thus disconnected the cover of the tub can be raised to insert or remove the wash. Below its fulcrum lever I is bent or curvedaway from the tub and extends, preferably, in a curved courseto a suitable point under the tub where it has a weight J secured to its lower end, which may be spherical (as shown) or otherwise, and either per- -manently or removably secured thereto, -In
operation, when said lever is worked back and forth, the pendulous weight J on its lower end takes the place of the fly-wheel, now so extensively used on this class of washing machines, and materially assists the manual operation of the same. By adjusting this weight longitudinally on the lower arm of the'lever, as shown in the drawings, a longer and slower or a shorter and quicker movement of thelever may be facilitated, and this adjustability of the weight constitutes a very important feature of my invention, although it may be removably secured thereto if desired.
What I claim as new is 1. A mechanical movement for washing machines comprising a vertically disposed rotary reciprocal shaft, a lever movable in, a plane parallel to said shaft and having its lower end curved in the direction of its movement, a weight connected to its lower pendulous end, and means actuated by said lever in the same plane therewith for transmitt-ing motion therefrom to said rotary reciprocal shaft.
2. A mechanical movement for washing machines comprising a vertically disposed rotary reciprocal shaft, a lever movable in 3 back and forth by its actuating mechanism,
a plane parallel to said shaft and having its lower end curved in the direction of its movement, a weight attached to its lower pendulous end, and means actuated by said lever in the same plane therewith for transmitting motion therefrom to said rotary reciprocal shaft.

A mechanical movement for washing machines comprising a vertically disposed rotary reciprocal shaft, a lever movable in a plane parallel to said shaft and having its lower end curved in the direction -of its movement, a weight adjustable longitudinally on its lower pendulous end, and means actuated by said lever in the same plane therewith for transmitting motion therefrom to said rotary reciprocal shaft.

A mechanical movement for washing machines comprising a vertical rotary reciprocal shaft, mechanism for actuating the same including a vertically disposed lever fulcrumed mediate its ends and connected to said shaft, the plane of movement of said lever being parallel to the axis of said shaft, and having its lower end curved in the direct-ion of its movement, and a weight removably connected to the lower end of the same.

A mechanical movement for washing machines comprising a rotary reciprocal driven shaft, a rotary reciprocal driveshaft arranged at right angles thereto, means operatively connecting said shafts, a spur-wheel on said drive-shaft, a lever disposed in the same general direction as said driven-shaft and fulcrumed mediate its ends, a weight adjustable longitudinally on the lower pendulous end of said lever, and a reciprocal rack-bar pivotally connected to and actuated by said lever, and extending toward said rotary reciprocal shaft and engaging said spur-wheel.

A mechanical movement for washing machines comprising a rotary reciprocal driven shaft, a rotary reciprocal drive-shaft arranged at right angles thereto, means operatively connecting said shafts, a spurwheel on said drive-shaft, a lever disposed in the same general direction as said drivenshaft whose lower end is curved. under its support and which is fulcrumed mediate its ends, a weight adjustable longitudinally on the lower pendulous end of said lever, and a reciprocal rack-bar pivotally connected to and actuated by said lever, and extending toward said rotary reciprocal shaft and engaging said spur-wheel.

A mechanical movement for washing machines comprising a rotary reciprocal driven shaft, a rotary reciprocal drive-shaft arranged at right angles thereto, means operatively connecting said shafts, a spurwheel on said drive-shaft, a lever disposed in the same general direction as said driven shaft and fulcrumed mediate its ends, a weight on the lower pendulous end of said lever, and a reciprocal rack-bar removably connected to and actuated by said lever and extending toward said rotary reciprocal shaft'and engaging said spur-wheel.

A mechanical movement for washing machines comprising a rotary reciprocal driven shaft, a rotary reciprocal drive-shaft arranged at right angles thereto, means operatively connecting said shafts, a spurwheel on said drive-shaft, a lever disposed in the same general direction as said driven shaft whose lower end is curved under its support and which is fulcrumed mediate its ends, a weight on the lower pendulous end of said lever, and a reciprocal rack-bar removably connected to and actuated by said lever and extending toward said rotary rcciprocal shaft and engaging said spur-wheel.

A mechanical movement for washing machines comprising a rotary reciprocal driven shaft, a rotary reciprocal drive-shaft arranged at right angles thereto, means operatively connecting said shafts, a spurwheel 011 said drive-shaft, a lever disposed in the same general direction as said drivenshaft and fulcrumed mediate its ends, a weight adjustable longitudinally on the lower pendulous end of said lever, and a reciprocal rack-bar removably connected to and actuated by said lever and extending toward said rotary reciprocal shaft and engaging said spur-wheel.
