SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 674,988, dated. May 28, 1901.

To all whom itmcty concern.-

Be it known that I, ROBERT H. J. RHODES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bloomingtou, in the county of McLean and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.

Myinvention relates to the class of washingmachines in which oscillating rubbers are employed; and it consists in the improvedconstruction hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a machine constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar View with the cover raised to expose the rubbers to view, and Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the machine ready for use.

Referring now to the drawings by referencenumerals, l designates the clothes receptacle or tub, provided with a corrugated bottom 2 and resting upon standards or legs 3. On the upper edge of the tub 1 is arranged an L- shaped flange 4:, surrounding the entire contour thereof, to prevent the suds from splashing out when the agitators are in motion.

5 designates a hollow cover hinged to one end of the tub 1 and designed to carry the entire operating mechanism, to be hereinafter described.

6 and 7 of the cover 5 are pivoted a plurality of rocking bars 8, each carrying alternating cross-bars 9 intermediate their ends and at predetermined distances apart-that is to say, the cross-bars 9 on one of the bars designated by the reference-numeral S alternate with those on the'other bars.

Downwardly-projecting pounders or agitators 10 project from the respective ends of the bars 9 and serve to agitate the clothes when the bars 8 are rocked.

Centrally from each of the rocking bars 8 project upwardly-extending fingers 11, pivotally secured to a pitman 12, arranged within the cover 5 and having an end extension 13,

which projects through a slot 14 in the cover.

Curved standards 15 are secured to the top of the cover 5 and are designed to support a gear-wheel 16, operated by a crank 17, which rotates a similar gear 18. A crank 19 is connected to the shaft of this gear 18 and to the pitman 20, engaging the pitman 12, whereby the agitators are vibrated.

It will thus be seen that by turning the crank 17 the gears 16 18 and crank.19 will be rotated to reciprocate the pitmen 20 and 12, which in turn will cause the agitators to oscillate, and by pounding or rubbing the ma terial within the tub 1 the water will be caused to'mingle therewith, so as to extract all foreign matter therefrom.

While I have shown the preferred form of my invention, I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make all such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.

I claim- 1. In a washing-machine, the combination with a suitable clothes-receptacle, of a hinged lid thereon carrying a pounder mechanism, comprising a plurality of bars, alternating cross-bars on the firstnamed bars, pounders on the respective ends of the said cross-bars, and a lever mechanism for operating the same.

2. In a washing-machine, the combination with a suitable clothes-receptacle, of a hinged lid thereon carrying a pounder mechanism, comprising a plurality of bars, alternating cross-bars on the first-named bars, pounders on the respective ends of said cross-bars, projections on each of the first-named bars, a pitman connecting said projections, and means for operating the pitman.
