To all whom it may concern: Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. SEM'ON, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Securing Protecting-Jackets Upon Cans, of which the following is a specification. My invention relates'to devices for securing protecting jackets upon cans such as sheet metal oil cans. An object is to provide cans with jackets which will prevent the cans from injury when subjected to rough usage. An object in particular is to provide .efiicient and economical means for attaching the jacket securely in .place.

The full objects and advantages of my in vention will appear in connection with the detailed description thereof and the novel features embodied in my inventive idea will be'particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the construction shown in the drawings, 10 designates a sheet metal can the body of which is surrounded by a protecting jacket 12 preferably of wood and having hoops l4 and 16 at its top and bot tom. The jacket may be conveniently formed of a thin sheet of material such as wood having an overlapping joint 18 as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 and provided with hoops the ends of which may also be overlapped as usual. The jacket is prevented from sliding downwardly on the can by clips 20 preferably consisting of two arms having inwardly-turned ends 22 which engage under the top hoop 14 as shown in Fig. 2. The intermediate portions 24 of the clips are turned inwardly over the hoop and jacket so asto engage the customary flange 26 on the upper portion of the body of the can. The bottom of the can is provided with a protecting disk 28 which may be of wood or other suitable material. This disk is held in place :by clips which also prevent the jacket fromsliding upwardly on the can. For this purpose a pair of clips .tom hoops secured to said jacket, clips seis provided and these clips have two arms 30 the outer ends of which are first bent downwardly and then upwardly over the bottom hoop '16 as shown in Fig. 2 and the extreme outer ends are finally bent inwardly over the hoop 16 as shown in Fig. 1. The arms 30 of each pair of clipsconverge to-Q ward the center of the bottom and are-connect-ed by short integral portions 32 and 34. These portions, one on each clip, lie adja- I p cent each other and are held together by a sleeve 36. 1 The operation and advantages of my in- I vontion will be understood from the foregoing description. Theprotecting jacket is formed of properisize to fit over the can and 1s slipped upon the body thereof. The clips, which are preferably of resilient wire, are

secured over the top and bottom hoops so 7 that the inner ends of the top clips engage the flange at the upper portion of the body extend under the protecting bottom member and hold the latter in place, The jacket is thus held firmly in place since it is prevented from sliding either upwardly or downwardly.

In combination with a can, a-protecting j acket surrounding the I. can, clips attached to'the top of the jacket and engaging the customary flange on the upperportion of the can, clips attached to the bottom of the jacket and extending to the center of the bottom of the canwhereby a protecting bottom member is held in place, and a sleeve for holding; said last-mentioned clips together at the center of the bottom.

In'combination with a can, a protecting jacket surrounding the can, top and botcured over the top hoop and engaging the customary flange on the upper portion of 4 the can, clips secured over the bottom hoop and having arms extending to the center of the'bottomof the can whereby a protecting 100 bottom member is held in place, and a sleeve surrounding the. inner portions of said arms for holding said last-mentioned clips together at the center of the bottom.
