Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN lRONlNG-TABLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,303, dated January 28, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM WEGHSLER, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Ironing-Table, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved ironing-table, showing the parts folded to gether. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, showing the ironing-board in position for use. Fig. 3 is a top view thereof; and Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse section on the line 0 c, Fig. 3.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
The object of this invention is to provide a table which is especially adapted for ironing shirt-bosoms and other articles, and which, when not to be used for ironing purposes, can be folded together and used as a dining or kitchen table. The invention consists in having a table with a movable ironing-board fitted to support shirt-bosoms in position for ironing, which board, when not required, can be withdrawn and replaced by an extension top, whereby the table is converted into a dining or kitchen table. The invention also consists in the arrangement of minor details of improvemen t, as hereinaftermore fully described.
In the drawing, the letter A represents the supporting-frame of the table, and B is the.
table-top, extending over about half thelen gth of the frame A. O is an additional section of the table-top, which constitutes an extension thereof, as in Fig. 1, it being fastened by projecting tenons a in eyes I), that project from the under side of the top B. When the table is to be used for ironing purposes the plate 0 is removed, and in its place a board, D, shaped as shown in Fig. 3, to fit the bosom part of a shirt, is applied, the said board D having similar tenons a as the plate 0, to be applied to the table-top B in manner indicated in Fig. 2. E is a bar, hinged to one side of the table so that it can be folded transversely over the same-that is to say, over the inner end of the board D-to clamp the lower part of the shirt bosom and hold it down.
Theshirt to be ironed is stretched over the board D, whose neck portion or outer end (I enters the shirt-collar, and, after the shirt has been properly stretched, the bar E is folded down over it to hold it in place, theswingin g end of the bar being, by a suitable catch, 6, locked down to remain stationary. A sliding frame, F, which is connected with a lever, G, fitted to the frame A, carries two uprights, g g, at the outer end of the table, and can, by moving the lever G, be slid inwardly so as to carry the posts g g against the shoulder-pieces of the shirt-that is to say, against the outer end of the board D. The shirt, being thus properly confined and placed, can be quickly and perfectlyironed and polished, and is movable by swinging the lever G, and afterward raising the bar E, and then withdrawing the shirt.
At that end of the table which is opposite to the board D there is or may be an extension board, h, for ironing other parts or arti cles that cannot be conveniently placed on the board D. An ordinary ironing -board may also, if desired, be connected with this top, so it can be slid into this table, and can be drawn out in position for use whenever desired.
When the table is not to be used for ironing purposes the bar E is swung up or out of the way, the board D detached and placed in the lower part of the frame A, where other receptacles for its tenons a may be provided like those indicated in line with the table-top B, to complete the ordinary table.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An ironing-table provided with the mov able top (3, ironing-board D, and slide F, substantially as described.
2. The bar E, applied in conjunction with the subject-matter of the foregoing clause, as and for the purposes described.
3. The lever G, combined with the sliding frame F and uprights g to operate the same,
as specified.
