Description
D.` WALKER. Gomh'nved Aiiue-Table and Bed.
Patented Jan. 21,1873.
AM mora -umosnAPH/c co. N. m'aaRA/f's moors@ PATENT QEEIcE.
DAVID WALKER, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED OFFICE-TABLES AND BEDS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,021, dated January 21, 1873.
1o all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAvrD WALKER, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New J ersey, have invented a new and useful Compound Ofce-Table and Bed; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and correct description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l is a perspective View of the table closed for use as an office-table. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the table with the top removed, showing the position of the mattress when not in use. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the table and mattress arranged for use as a bed.
The same letter indicates the same part in the several figures.
My invention consists in the construction of an office-table in such a manner that itcan be used as a bed when desired, the construction and mode of operation being substantially as hereinafter set forth.
In the drawing, A marks the front, T the top, and L the legs, of a large office-table. The
vtop T may be made in one or more pieces, at
tached in any preferred manner to the frame, but so as to be readily removable at pleasure.
-When the top is removed the arrangement of parts shown in Fig. 2 is presented. Upon the stout side frame B are supported the transverse boards or slats a. b c d e, hinged together and folded, as shown in Fig. 2. The ends of the table are composed of the two pieces E F E F', hin ged together at g g so that the upper pieces F F can fold inward and occupy the position shown in Fig. 3. The pieces (l D E and G Dl El form boxes in the ends of the table, which receive the ends of the mattress M when the table is closed, as in Figs. l and 2.
YVhen it is desired to use the table as a bed the top is removed, the mattress taken out, and the pieces F F folded down, as shown in Fig. 3. Theslats a b c d cf are then unfolded and placed in the position they occupy in Fig. 3, and the mattress replaced upon them.
Various modifications of thedetails of construction may be made Without affecting the essential character of my invention. For example, vthe ends of the table may be folded outward instead of inward, so as to secure greater length, if desirable; or the ends'may slide out in the manner of ordinary drawers.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is l The table A, made convertible into a bed by means of the removable top T, folding bottom a b c d e f, and folding ends F F', and provided with recesses for the reception of the ends of the mattress M when not in use, suhstantially as described.
The above specification of my said invention signed and witnessed at Washington this 27th day of November, A. D. 1872.
DAVID WALKER. Witnesses:
F. W. HOWARD, OHAs. F. STANsBURY.
