Description

l. H.- BENDER.
CARD HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED 1uLY22. |919.
1,349,935. Patented Aug. 17, 1920.
A WITNESS: 2 INI/EN TOR.' @m/ffm@ /0 Jaim jf. Bende/f l 8 BY A TTORNE Y.
Unirse STATES' I TENT OFFICE.
JOHN H. BENDER, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
Application led July 22, 1919.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. BnNDnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Card-Holders, of which the following is a specilication.
My invention relates to card holders and my primary object is to provide a simple, inexpensive and reliable device which will hold a number of cards in such manner that they can be removed successively from the holder.
A further object is to provide a device in which the card holding elements may be formed from one piece of sheet metal which is so shaped as to permit the ready insertion and removal of the cards.
With these and other objects in view, the invention may be said to consist of the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the complete holder with its cover in open position.
F ig. 2 is a broken vertical longitudinal section of the holder.
F ig. 3 is a detail plan view of the onepiece metal frame embodying the important features of the invention.
In carrying out the invention, I employ a frame 1, preferably stamped from one piece of metal to effect economy in material and the cost of construction.
The frame 1 consists of a back plate 2 having upturned corner members a, covered at their upper ends with triangular top plates 6. Spring elements 8 are struck from the back plate 2 and have their free ends bent upwardly beneath the top plates 6.
The back plate 2 is provided adjacent its ends with tongues or retaining members 10, which are struck from said back plate and adapted to enter pockets 12 in a leather or other' suitable cover 14 having flaps 1G and 18, adapted to fold over the top of the frame 1 and be secured by suitable means such as an ordinary glove fastener embodying a socket 20 and a button 22 secured to the flaps 16 and 18, respectively.
In practice, a plurality of cards are placed in position by slipping their corners beneath the top plates 6 of the frame l.. This operation depresses the spring elements S and tensions the same, causing them to exert Specification of Letters Patent.

upward pressure on the cards and hold the topmost one against the underside of the plates 6. `When it is desired to remove the topmost card the longitudinal margins of the same are grasped intermediate their ends by the thumb and forei'inger and pulled. upwardly. This bows the card sullieiently to withdraw its corners from beneath the top plates 6. -When a card is thus removed the remaining cards are immediately forced upwardly by the spring elements S until the succeeding card rests against the underside of the top plates 6. The spring elements 8 are under su'llicient tension to reliably hold the top card in position against the underside of the 'top plates G until said card is removed. By exerting the pressure only at the corners of the cards there is no danger' of smearing the printed matter, an annoyance which frequently occurs when freshly printed cards are placed in holders which exert pressure directly upon suchv printed matter, and as cards may be removed from my holder without sliding them longitudinally the tissue sheets interposed between finely engraved cards are not displaced, which is a common annoyance where the cards have to be slid longitudinally as they are successively removed from their holder.
From the foregoing it will be understood that I hr .fe provided a simple, efficient, and inexpensive holder in which a plurality of cards may be arranged in such manner that the cards can be removed successively, and that said device forms a compact and convenient means for holding cards or the like.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a device of the character described, a frame consisting of a back plate adapted to support a plurality of cards, corner members on said back plate adapted to abut the corners of the cards, top plates on said corner members, and spring members struck from the back plate to press the cards upwardly and hold the uppermost card in engagement with said top plates.
In a device of the character described, a frame consisting of a back plate adapted to support a plurality of cards, corner members on said back plate adapted to abut the corners of the cards, top plates on said corner members, spring members struck from the hack plate to press the cards upwardly and hold the uppermost card in engagement with said top plates, und e cover secured to the back plate.
3. In :t device of the Character described,
a rume Consisting o" :L back plate adapted to support a plurality o1 cards, corner meinbers on .said buck plete adapted to abut the Corners of the cards, top plates on said co1'- nei` members, resilient means to press the Cards upwardly and hohl the uppermost card 10 in engagement with said top plates, retain* in@l members struck from the [mok plate, und :i cover having pockets to receive said retaining members.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN H. BENDER.
