To all ichom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN B. SHAW, citizen of the United States, residing at Jeanerette, in the parish of Iberia and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable-Leaf Books and Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in books and the like having detachable leaves, and has for one of its objects to improve the construction and increase the efficiency and v utility of devices of this character.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character of improved construction wherein provision is made for detaching the leaves either in bulk or separately and covering and protecting the same when not in use.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character having a movable cover which is adapted to be folded beneath the base or support when not in use.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character having an improved construction of leaf-holding devices from which one or more of the leaves may be detached without disturbing the remainder.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character having the stubs arranged to be bodily removed from the holder and retained in connected position indefinitely.
WVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereafter shown and described, and then specifically pointed out in the claims, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved device with the cover folded beneath the base or support or with the improved device arranged for use; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section with the cover in position above the detachable leaves; Fig. is a rear elevation of the improved device arranged as shown in Fig. 2, and partly in section; Fig. 1 is a sectional detail illustrating the construction and operation of the check stub-covering device.

The improved device comprises a base or support 10 of any suitable sizeand of any suitable material, the size of the base depending upon the form of the leaves which are attached thereto. The improved device may be employed for leaves of various kinds, such as checks, receipts, bills, invoices or the like, and may be arranged to hold any required number and with the leaves of any required size or proportion. The improved device is designed more particularly for holding checks in blank with the checks and stubs divided by perforated tearing lines, and for the purpose of illustration a block of check blanks is shown with five checks in each leaf, represented at 11, and a separate stub represented at 12 for each check blank. The check blanks are separated by tearing perforations represented at 13 and separated from the stubs by tearing perforations 14. Each superimposed set of stubs is provided with registering perforations 1G to receive the holding devices.
The base 10 is provided with a transverse recess 17 having dovetailed or undercut sides as shown, and fitting in this recess is a slide or fastener support 18 conforming to the dove-tailed sides of the recess. By this means the member 18 may be inserted into the recess 17 from one end, but cannot be moved upwardly.
The recess 17 does not extend entirely across the base 10 so that the member 18 can be removed from one side only of the base, and the base is provided with a de pression 15 in the bottom of the recess 17 at its open end to receive a spring catch 30 to yieldably engage the member 18 and hold it in its recesses. Rising from the member 18 are pairs of tubular studs 19 corresponding in number to the apertures 16 of the stub blanks. For instance if live sets of the check blanks and their stubs are employed as shown in the illustration, then five sets of the perforated studs will be employed as shown, and the number of the studs will vary with the variations in the number of the check blanks employed. The studs 19 are arranged in pairs as shown, and each pair is provided with a U-shaped member .20 engaging by its sides in the studs and forming together with the studs, a fastening device to hold the stubblanks in position and to permit any one of the stubs to be turned over into the space rearwardly of the member 18 as may be'preferred.
It will be noted that the recess 17 and the member 18 are located at some distance from the rear end of the body 10, so that the stub blanks may be turned over into this space when required.
At its rear end the body 10 is provided with two standards 21-22, and rising for 'some distance above the upper face of the body 10 and provided respectively with laterally projecting pins 232et, and mounted to swing upon the pins 232t are links 2526. A cover 27 is provided for the improved device and corresponds substantially in size to the body 10. The member 27 is provided with pins 2829 at one end to which the free ends of the links 2526 are pivotally connected as shown.
The links and standards are so proportioned that when the cover 27 is turned over and located beneath the body 10 and rests flatly against its under surface, the links 2526 will stand vertically and against the outer faces of the brackets 21-22, as shown in Fig. 1. By this means the cover is readily disposed beneath the body 10 and out of the way when not required, leaving the upper surface of the blanks free to be used without annoyance from the cover. Disposing the cover beneath the body 10 when not in use, also enables the improved device to be located in convenient posit-ion upon a desk or table and occupy a much less space than it otherwise would.
Means are provided in the improved device for covering and protecting the stubs of the checks from observation by unauthorized persons, while at the same time pro viding for their ready accessibility by au thorized persons. This protecting portion of the device comprises a plurality of plates 31 superimposed and bearing face to face, each plate having an upwardly directed tubular member 32 which are telescopically arranged, the lowermost plate having a relatively small tubular member and the tubular members increasing in size toward the outermost tubular member, as shown. The innermost tubular member is provided with an operating handle 33, while the outer plate is extended rearwardly and provided with a pintle or hinge bolt 34. The bolt 34 is connected into vertical standards 35, as shown. At their lower ends the standards are connected to clips 36 which bear over the rear edge of the base 10, the standards being thus detachably coupled to the base. By this arrangement it will be obvious that the plates 31 and their tubular portions 32 are movably coupled to the base and in position to be swung rearwardly of and free from the check blanks when the latter are to be detached, or arranged to lie over the stubs of the check blank, as shown in Fig. 1, and in position to be drawn outwardly to cover and protect the stubs, as shown in Fig. 3. The plates 31 with their tubular portions 32 are constructed of sheet metal as light as possible consistent with the strains to which they will be subjected. The rear edges of the several plates 31 or other telescoping portions 32 are provided with suitable stop means to prevent them from pulling apart when distended.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A device of the class described, comprising a base member, a supporting member detachably connected to the base, a plurality of tubular studs rising from said supporting member and arranged in pairs and adapted to support a plurality of sheets,
a U-shaped member detachably engaging each pair of said tubular studs, standards rising from said base at one side, a cover member, links pivotally connected respectively at their ends to said standards and cover whereby the cover member may be located above the base or folded beneath 'the base and in engagement with its under surface, and a plurality of plates engaging face to face and slidable over each other to bear over sheets when disposed upon said base.
2. A device of the class described, com prising a base member, standards rising from said base member at one side, a cover member, links pivotally connected respectively at their ends to said cover and standards whereby the cover member may be located above the base and spaced therefrom or folded beneath the base and in engagement with its under surface, and a plurality of plates engaging face to face and slidable over each other to bear over sheets when disposed upon said base.
3. In a device of the class described, a base adapted to support a plurality of sheets, and a plurality of plates engaging face to face and slidable over each other to bear over sheets when disposed upon said base.
4. In a device of the class described, a base member, means for supporting a plurality of sheets upon said base, and a plurality of plates slidably engaging face to lface, and mounted to swing relative to said ase.
5. In a device of the class described, a
base member, means for supporting a plurality of sheets upon said base, a plurality of plates slidably engaging face to face, and means for detachably coupling said plates to said base in position to swing relative thereto and to be projected over said sheets.
6. In a device of the class described, a i
base member, means for supporting a plurality of sheets upon said base, a plurality of plates slidably engaging face to face, a clip adapted to be detachably connected to the base and including vertical standards, and means for swingingly coupling one of said plates to said standards.
7. In a device of the class described, a base member, means for supporting a plurality of sheets upon said base, and a plurality of plates slidably engaging face to face and provided respectively with tubular projections telescopically disposed and adapted to be projected over said sheets.
8. In a device of the class described, a base member, means for supporting a plurality of sheets upon said base, a plurality of plates superimposed and provided respectively with tubular projections telescopically disposed and adapted to be projected Over said sheets, a clip adapted to be detachably connected to the base and including vertical standards, and means for swingingly coupling one of said plates to said standards.
