APPLICATION FILED 00131, 1919;

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK S. I-IYA'IT, 0F BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
VANITY-BOX.
To all whom it may concern:
li o it known that l, FRANK S. HYATT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Van* hay-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to vanity boxes or similar containers for toilet articles such as powder and rouge pads and lip-sticks and the like, the invention consisting more particularly in the manner in which the toilet articles are positioned and removably held in the container.
The invention has for its object the production of a novel vanity or similar box so constructed as to permit the contents there of to be snugly and compactly held therein.
My present invention is an improvement on that shown and described in my prior atent lo. 1,321,450, dated Nov. 11, 1919, in that .it dispenses with the transverse partition or wall and the spring ears connected therewith and adapted to grip a lip-stick holder as described in said application and substitutes therefore a novel, simple and inexpensive retainer for the lipstick holder.
The invention consists in the novel parts and combinations of parts hereinafter more particularly described and then specified in the claims.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure l is a top plan view of my improved vanity box.
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing the cover in open position.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, but showing the lip-stick holder and powder puffs removed.
Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on the line l-d of Fig. 1. a
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of my improved retainer for a lip-stick holder.
Referring in detail to the several figures of the drawing:
1 indicates the body of the vanity box which is preferably constructed of thin sheet metal and which is also preferably provided with areuate end walls as illustrated. Hinged to said body is a suitable cover 2 provided with a clasp 3 adapted to engage a protuberance 4: which is struck out from the body, whereby the body and cover may be detachably connected together. Said body is also provided with a seat or shoul- Specification of Letters Patent Application filed October 31, 1919.

der 5 for engagement of the edge of the cover and which acts as a stop therefor. If so desired I also may mount a mirror (3 on the inner side of the cover. 2 although this and similar details of construction form no part of my invention and may be varied or ends ll) comprising a double thicknessof metal and formed by turning over the ends of the metal strip, as described, engaging the inner sides of the Vanity box. The rear flange S is perforated as at 11 and the front flange 9 is cut or stamped out or slotted as at 12 to form a U-shaped portion. Said retainer being formed of a single strip of metal may be cheaply and easily manufac tured as is obvious.
13 indicates removable annular pads 01 containers adapted to hold rouge or powder tablets or any other cosmetic preparation or compound, said pads fitting within the vanity box and preferably engaging each other and the arcuate end walls of the body of the vanity boX as well as resting on the base of the retainer 7. As is manifest, the retainer 7 could be so constructed, if desired, as to have the annular pads also engage the flanges 8 and 9 to more firmly and snugly hold the pads 13 within the vanity box.
1 1 indicates a lip-stick holder or similar device which is removably held by the retainer '7 by inserting one end of the lip-stick holder through the perforation 11 of flange 8 and allowing the other end to rest or be seated within the U-shaped portion 12 of flange 9. 15 indicates the usual powder puffs which rest loosely on the powder or rouge tablets held by the pads 13 and which preferably are compressed against the same by the cover 9 when said cover is in closed position.
lVhen the cover 2 is in closed position the contents of the box are securely and compactly held therein and are thus prevented from being shaken around and becoming damaged. The space intermediate the powder pufli's 15 is occupied by the lip stick holder 14 which, when held by the retainer 7, serves in a measure to prevent the rouge or powder pads 13 from becoming displaced when the box is turned on en dor tilted. The invention as is obvious is not limited to the use of a lip-stick holder although I prefer to use a cosmetically useful article.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A vanity box holding a plurality of rouge or powder holding pads therein and a; retainer engaging the opposite vertical side walls of the vanity box and supported thereby and provided with a perforation and a slotted portionreceiving and holding a cosmetically useful article.
2. A vanity box holding a plurality of rouge or powder holding pads snugly therein and a retainer fitting within the vanity engaging the base and opposite sidewalls thereof and supported thereby, said retainer being provided with a perforated upturned flange and with an upturned flange provided with a U-shaped cut-away portion, said perforated flange and U-shaped cut-away portion relnovably receiving and holding a cosmetically useful article over the rouge or powder holding pads.
4. A "anity box holding a plurality of rouge or powder holding pads therein and a retainer comprising a single strip of flat sheet metal the ends of which are folded over on itself to form a double thickness of metal and then turned upwardly to form vertical flanges adapted to removably hold a cosmetically useful article, said retainer fitting within the vanity box with the ends of the double thickness of metal thereof engaging the opposite side walls of the vanity box whereby spaces are left between the opposite side walls and the vertical flanges of the retainer.
Signed at Brooklyn in the county of Kings and State of New York this th day of October, A. D. 1919.
