WILLIAM G. REED, 0F STOCKVILLE, NEBRASKA.
HARNESS-BUCKLE.
Application filed April 16,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, lVILLIAM C. Reno, a citizen of the Unite: States, residing at Stockville, in the county of Frontier and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harnessliuckles, of which the following is a spec".- tication.
This invention relates to an improved harness buckle and has for its primary object to provide such a strap buckling means which when applied will eliminate any pos sibility oft-he buckled strap becoming disconnected from the buckle by a pull upon the strap in any direction and at any angle.
it is also an important object of the invention to provide a strap buckling means which may be employed in buckling acheck line to a main line, or in a similar use, without distorting or kinking the main line to any appreciable extent.
It is a further object of my invention to provide a buckle that will not catch in any way on other parts of the harness or nets, thus insuring absolute freedom of the reins at all times.
And it is afurther general object ol my invention to provide a strap buckling means as above characterized, which is highly serviceable and convenient in practical use. strong and durable, and of a simple and artistic design.
l Vith the above and other objects in view, my invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my im proved harness buckle when applied, and
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of F 1, and
Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the buckle.
In the accompanying drawings, I have illustrated my invention employed for buckling a check line to a main line, or more particularly, for buckling the inside check rein line to the outside check rein line, which arrangement is commonly employed in driv ing two horses. It is to be understood, however, that my invention is not to be limited by this particular illustration in its use.
The buckle is adapted to any'use of the or dinary harness buckle and the accompanying drawings only illustrate an application Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 6, 122

of my invention for which it is particularly adapted.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 5 designates a shell or body being provided with an opening 6, substantially rectangular in form and having one longitudinal edge turned inwardly as at 8. Diametrically opposite the opening 6 in the shell 5 i provide the slot 9 extending in the same plane as the opening 6.
The shell 5 has the plate 10,e. :tending diametrically within theshell, and in line with the opening 6 and'the slot 9. its one end being supported by the legs 11 which are fixed to the wall of the shell 5 in any suitable manner, and the said end of the plate being disposed in spacedrelation to the slot 9 in the shell 5. A pin or stud 12 is securely attached to the plate 10 intermediate of its ends. The other end of the plate 10 is extended through the opening 6 and turned upon itself to provide a sleeve 13. The wall of said sleeve being recessed, or cut away, as indicated at 18, through which the angular-1y disposed terminals 19 of the strap loop 20 project and thereby limit the swinging movement of the said loop by engagement of the projecting terminals 19 with the plate 10. This end of the plate 10 may be permanently fixed to the wall of the shell 5 in any suitable manner. 21 and 22 designate straps, the strap 21 be ing riveted or otherwise secured to the loop 20 and the strap 22 buckled in the shell 5.
In applying my improved harness buckle, as above described, one end of the strap 22 is placed in the opening 6 and pushed inwardly. The pin or stud 12 directs the strap against the shell and the curvature of said shell directs the strap downwardly until it reaches the slot 9 where it passes through the shell. The strap may then be drawn through the shell until the desired opening 23 is approximately in position for engaging the stud 12. Now by shifting the strap longitudinally and pulling downwardly on the strap extending from the opening 6, the pin or stud 12 will engage the desired opening 23 in said strap. W'hen wishing to disconnect the strap 22, by grasping the strap on the side adjacent to the opening 6 in the shell 5 and pushing the strap into the shell, the curvature of the shell permits the strap to bend upwardly whereby it will become disengaged from the pin or stud 12 and may then be drawn from the buckle or shell.
at any angle will not detach the strap 22' from the pin or stud 12. These features are very desirable in connecting the inside check rein line to the mainline or outside check rein line as before stated and illustrated in v the accompanying drawings by the Fig. 1.
From the foregoing description taken in consideration with the accompanying drawings, the "construction, manner of operation andseveral advantages of the invention will be clearly understood. It is to be borne in mind, however, that these features of the device are susceptible of many mechanical variations and may be embodied in numerous alternative forms; Therefore, while I have shown and described what I at present believe to be the best embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that I expressly reserve the privilege of adopting all such legitimate modifications as maybe fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
1 claim:
1. In a buckle, a hollow shell having a curved interior and oppositely disposed openings, a plate within said shell and eX-' hereto.
tending at one end through one of said openings, said plate having a laterally directed tongue intermediate its ends, means for swingingly connecting said plate at the other end to said shell near the other opening thereof, means for attaching a strap to the extended end of said plate, and another strap. having spaced perforations adapted to pass through one opening of the shell and deflected by the curvature thereof through the other opening and engaging by one of its apertures with the tongue. V
2; Ina buckle, ahollow shell including a curved interior wall and oppositely disposed openings, a plate within said shell and hEI-V', ing a strap supporting tongue and extending at one end through one of said openings, means for attaching said plate at the inner end to the shell, means for coupling a strap to the extended portion of said plate,
and another strap having spaced 1361f01ittions and adapted to be passed through one of said shell openings and deflected by the curvature thereof, through the other open ing and engaging by one of its apertures with the tongue.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature WILLIAM C. REED.
