Description

\ L. DOONAR.
WRENCH.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 18, I919.
1,344,265. Patented June 22, 1920.
WITNESSES INVENTOR W Lawns DUO/VAR ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS DOONAR, 0F BEND, OREGON.
WRENCH.
Application filed June 18,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LoUIs DOONAR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bend, in the county of Deschutes and State of Oregon, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tools, particularly to wrenches, and has for its object the provision of a wrench which is speciallydesigned for use in removing the nuts which hold the bearing caps on the connecting rods of an automobile engine, the device being specially designed for use in connection with number four pistonof a Ford automobile engine, it being well known in the art that the nuts holding the bearing cap on the connecting rod of this particular piston are very inaccessible and that it is almost necessary to remove the motor in order to gain access to these parts.
An important object is the provision of a tool of this character which is so constructed that the socket carried thereby may be readily engaged upon the connecting rod bearing cap nut, though it will be understood that the wrench may be used in other capacities.
An additional object is the provision of a wrench of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, which will be powerful in use, efiicient and durable in service,- and a general improvement in the I art.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is an elevation of a piston with its associated connecting rod and connecting rod bearing cap showing my wrench applied to one of the bearing cap nuts,
Fig. 2 is an enlarged elevation of the wrench taken at right angles to the piston shown in Fig. 1 and with parts broken away and in section, and
Fig. 3 is an end elevation.
Referring more particularly to the draw ing, the letter A designates a piston from which extends a connecting rod B having the bearing cap C secured by bolts D provided with nuts E. p
In carrying out my invention I provide a wrench which is formed as a tubular supporting body 10 having one end portion Specification of Letters Patent. I Patented J 11113 22, 1920.
1919. Serial No. 305,062.
provided with an enlargement 11 and provided in its ends with bearing members 12, only one of which is shown, and which are preferably of the ball bearing type. Journaled within the body 10 is a shaft 13 upon one end of which is secured a disk 1 1 carrying an eccentric handle 15 and also carrying a plurality of pins 16. Intermediate its ends, the shaft 13 has secured thereon a worm 17 which meshes with a worm wheel 18 secured upon a shaft 19 journaled through the enlarged portion 11 and disposed at right angles to the shaft 13. Also secured or formed upon the shaft 19 is a socket member 20 which is adapted for conforming engagement upon one of the nuts E.
In the use of the device the socket member 20 is engaged upon the nut E and the operator steadies the device by grasping in one hand the handle 21 extending downwardly from the underside of the body 10. The operator then grasps the handle 15 and rotates the disk 14 and consequently the shaft 13 and worm 17 for rotatin the worm wheel 18 and socket member 20 or turning the nut E in the desired direction. Then it is desired or necessary to tighten the nut to its maximum extent, use may be made of a bar 22 which isengaged between certain of the pins 16 on the disk 14;, whereby to provide a powerful leverage.
It will be readily observed from a study of the drawing and a perusal of the above description that the device is particularly adapted for the removal of the connecting rod bearing cap from number four piston of a Ford engine, though of course the device is clearly well adapted for removing the corresponding nuts from the other pistons or rather the connecting rods connected there- 1 claim A wrench of the character described comprising a tubular body provided adjacent one end with an enlarged portion, a shaft said shaft Within the enlarged portion of the casing, a shaft journaled through the 10 casing at right angles to said first named shaft, and a Worm Wheel on said last named shaft meshing with said Worm, said last named shaft having a nut engaging socket.
