Description
L 956 J. H. RANDALL, JR 2,
EXTENSION HANDLE FOR BOX WRENCHES Filed Feb. 9, 1954 Jack h. Ronda/l, Jn
INVENTOR.
United States Patent EXTENSION HANDLE FOR BOX WRENCI-IES Jack H. Randall, .liu, Nampa, Idaho Application February 9, 1954, Serial No. 409,076
4 Claims. (Ci. 81-477) The present invention relates to a handle extension for conventional box wrenches and the like.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a handle extension attachable to one socket of a conventional box wrench to enable the wrench to be utilized in comparatively inaccessible areas and is particularly constructed for use with starter wrenches.
Numerous box wrenches now on the market have specially designed curvatures on the Wrench shanks to enable these wrenches to gain access to the fastening means securing starters and the like in place in automotive vehicles. However, even with these specially designed and sometimes offset wrench shanks, it is impossible to rotate the Wrench once the same has been placed in engagement with the fasteners; consequently, one of the most important objects of this invention is to provide a handle attachable to that socket of the box wrench remote from the socket applied to the starter fasteners, said handle extending substantially at right angles to the wrench and accommodating at least two different wrench sizes.
These together with other objects and advantages which will subsequently become apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of the extension handle of the present invention to which a pair of conventional box wrenches are attached;
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the attachment of Figure 1 with the socketed ends of the conventional box wrenches being shown in cross-section for clarity of detail of the manner of attachment of the wrenches to the extension handle; and
Figure 3 is an exploded perspective view on an enlarged scale of one end of the extension handle and shows the parts used to removably attach a socketed end of a conventional box wrench thereto.
In the drawings, the handle extension is designated in its entirety by the numeral 10. The attachment consists essentially of an elongated preferably cylindrical shaft 12 having means 14 at each end thereof for releasably securing one end of a conventional box wrench thereto. As shown in Figure 1 two diiferent types and sizes of conventional box wrenches 16 and 18 are attached to the shaft 12, one wrench at each end of the shaft.
To secure one socket of each box wrench to the corresponding end of the shaft 12, each end portion of the shaft is provided with a portion reduced in diameter, a plate 20 in the form of a disk is slipped over each reduced end portion of the shaft and welded at its rear surface or otherwise fixedly secured to the end of the shaft. Mounted centrally on the front face of the plate 20 is a nut 22 from which the threads have been removed so that it will slip over the reduced end portion. The nuts 22 are welded or otherwise secured to the shaft end portions and are of different sizes so that each end of the shaft may be attached to a different-sized box wrench.
In the securement of the end of a conventional box wrench such as 16 to the end of the shaft 12, attention is drawn to Figure 3 wherein it is seen that the socket of the box wrench is simply placed over the correct-sized nut 22 so that one face of the box wrench abuts the plate 20, the box wrench socket being received on the nut 22 to retain the box wrench against movement.
To retain the box wrench socket on the nut 22, screw 24 having an enlarged washer 26 of a size corresponding to that of the plate 20 thereon is threaded into a threaded bore 23 in the end of the shaft with the washer 26 abutting the head 28 of the screw.
When in this position, the socketed end of the box wrench 16 is clamped between the plate 20 and the washer 26 thereby holding the wrench socket on the nut 22 and providing a right angled shaft or handle extension for the wrench.
By providing this nut construction on each end of the shaft, conventional box wrenches may be held in various radial positions with respect to the longitudinal axis of the shaft. This extension handle provides a highly economical, simple and valuable attachment whereby conventional box wrenches may be utilized in previously inaccessible positions.
From the foregoing, the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. A handle extension for conventional box wrenches comprising an elongated shaft, a flat plate having the rear face thereof secured to one end of the shaft, a nut secured to the front face of said shaft and being in axial alignment with said shaft, a screw passing through said nut, threaded into the end of said shaft, and carrying a washer thereon, said washer and plate being larger than said nut whereby a socketed end of a conventional box wrench may be clamped in a selected position on said 1111i.
2. A handle extension for conventional box wrenches comprising an elongated shaft, a nut fixedly attached to each end of said shaft as a longtudinal extension thereof for receiving a socketed end of a conventional box wrench whereby such a wrench will extend at right angles to the shaft, and means for releasably retaining such end of a box wrench on said nut.
3. A handle extension for conventional box wrenches comprising an elongated shaft, a nut fixedly attached to each end of said shaft as a longitudinal extension thereof for receiving a socketed end of a conventional box wrench whereby such a wrench will extend at right angles to the shaft, and means extending through each nut and into the corresponding end of the shaft and carrying a washer for abutment with each nut for retaining such end of a box wrench thereon, each of said nuts being mounted on an enlarged plate, and each plate being secured to the corresponding end of the shaft.
4. A handle extension for conventional box wrenches comprising an elongated shaft, a nut fixedly attached to each end of said shaft as a longitudinal extension thereof for receiving a socketed end of a box wrench whereby such a wrench will extend at right angles to the shaft, threaded means extending through each nut and into the 3 4 correspondingwnd ofv said-shaft for retaining such end of References Cited in the file of this patent ,1392 w cnshjhercontfiachfi said. nl ts. bein m UNITED STATES- PATENTS an enlarged plate, each plate being secured to the correspending end of the shaft, and said threaded means com- 1,830,143 1931 p rising;:a; screw, andiiaxwashemon saidscrew, said:washep 6 2367'689 Provldence 1945 and said plate netainingisuchzaendazof a boxi=w1=ench on Saidil'tilt'."
