Description

P. LAZARIDES..
ERASER HOLDlNG CLIP FOR PENCILS.
APPLICATION FILED APR-18,1919.
1,339,707, Patented May 11,1920;
; INVENTIOR ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. I
PLATON LAZARIDES, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
. ERASER-I-IOLDING CLIP FOR PENGILS.
Application filed April 18,
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PLATON LAzAnIDEs, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Eraser- Holding Clips for Pencils, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in attachments for pencils, and one of the objects of the invention is to provide a new and improved eraser carrying clip, which is adapted to be mounted upon a pencil so that the erasing device is located at the point or writing end of the pencil, so that it is always ready for instant use.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the above character, such that the eraser is mounted in such a way that it does not affect or interfere with the use of the pencil.
Another object of the invention is to provide a clip of the above character which is so constructed that it may be used as a protecting device for the point of the pencil.
Other objects and aims of the invention, more or less specific than those referred to above, will be in part obvious and in part pointed out in the course of the following description of the elements, combinations, arrangements of parts and applications of principles, constituting the invention; and the scope of protection contemplated will be indicated in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawing, wherein I have shown a preferred form of embodiment of my invention:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view, showing a pencil with my improved device mounted thereon.
Fig. 2 is a similar view, but taken at right angles to Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on line 3--3 of Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawing, wherein similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the views thereof, the reference numeral 1 denotes a metallic clip formed of spring metal and bent into cylindrical form so as to embrace a lead pencil, such as shown at 2. This clip is provided with cutaway portions or apertures, as at 3, the purpose of which is to weaken the spring tendency of the clip so that it will engage the pencil with the required pressure to hold it in position during use, and yet will permit it to be slid along the shaft of the pencil Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 11, 1920.
1919. Serial No. 291,046.
whenever desired, and held in its adjusted plosition through frictional contact with the 0 1p.
Extending rearwardly from the clip, and V-shaped in cross section in order to strengthen it, is an integrally formed arm 4:, in the end of which is formed the hemispherical concaved bearing member 5, which when the pencil is in use, is adapted to bear upon the shaft of the pencil and aid in holding the clip in the proper adjusted-position, and which when the pencil is carried in the pocket is adapted to engage with the fabric forming the facing of the pocket, whereby the pencil and clip are held in position in. the pocket of the garment.
Extending laterally and forwardly from the forward portion of the clip is an arm 6, at the outer end of which is provided an eraser 7 which is preferably formed of rubber. This arm, it will be noted, makes an oblique angle with the point of the pencil, so that when the pencil is in use it may be turned in the hand so that the eraser 7 is lifted above the plane of the writing surface. When, however, it is desired to use the eraser, it is merely necessary to turn the pencil slightly in the hand, thereby lifting the point of the pencil from the paper, but engaging the eraser therewith, whereby the desired erasure may be made and the writing continued by again slightly turning the pencil to bring the point thereof in writing position.
The'clip 1, the arm 2, and the arm 6 are preferably formed of an integral strip of metal, so that the entire device can be produced. at a modicum of cost, and the parts being integrally formed there is no danger of them being broken from the clip proper.
It will accordingly be seen that I have provided a device well adapted to attain, among others, all the aims and objects above pointed out, in an exceedingly simple yet eiiicient manner.
lonsiderable time is saved in the use of my device, inasmuch as whenever it is necessary to make an erasure, it is not necessary to reverse the pencil and use the rubber or eraser usually provided at the end of the writing point, it being merely necessary to make a slight turn of the hand of the writer, whereby the eraser is carried in a position for instant use. Moreover, the clip may be conveniently used as a protector for the pencil point by merely slipping it toward the Writing end of the pencil, so that the point will be partially protected.
As many changes could be made in this construction without departing from the scope of the following claim, it is intended that all matter contained in the above descri tion or shown in the accom an in 1 b drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative only and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
The combination with'a pencil, of a semicylindrical clip adjustably mounted thereon,
said clip formed of a single piece of spring metal, the outer'extremity of said clip being bent laterally and forwardly to form a semicylindrical offset which terminates adjacent the pencil point, and an eraser carriedby said ofi'set.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
