Description

Y. KINOSHITA.
THUMB TACK.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. 24. 1919.
1,338,988. 7 Patented May 4, 1920.
Wwrfmw 'BY q ATTORNEY l YOKICHI KINOSHITA, 0F BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
THUMB-TACK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 4, 1920.
Application filed February 24, 1919. Serial No. 278,587.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, YOKICHI KINosHrra, a subject of the Emperor of Japan, and resident of Boston, in the county of Suffolk,
State of Massachusetts, have made a certain new. and useful Invention in Thumb- Tacks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to thumb tacks, and is directed especially to such tacks as are employed by draftsmen, artists and engineers.
The object of the invention is to provide a thumb tack which will serve the purpose of holding drawing paper, bristol board, or the like, in secure position, without necessitating the paper, board or the like being punctured or otherwise marred by the thumb tack.
Further objects of the invention will be more fully hereinafter set forth.
The invention consists substantially in the construction of the thumb tack, all as will be more fully hereinafter set forth, as shown by the accompanying drawing, and finally pointed out in the appended claim.
Referring to the drawing,.
Figure l is a plan view of a stamping from which the thumb tack of my invention is constructed.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the completed thumb tack.
Fig. 3 is a view in elevation of the same.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of a modified form of thumb tack embodying my invention.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the same, taken on the line 5, 5, Fig. 4, and looking in the direction of the arrows.
Fig. 6 is a view' in side elevation of a still further modified construction embodying my invention.
The same part is designated by the same reference numeral wherever it occurs throughout the several views.
through the drawing paper, or the like, the same may lie at the side thereof with the head of the tack securely holding the draw in paper or the like in place.
Ideferring to Fig. 1, I show one form of tack constructed in accordance with my invention wherein the same is produced by stamping the same out of a sheet of suitable material such as sheet metal. The head 2 is of enlarged size and the pointed prong or tongue 3 which is so shaped to facilitate being forced into the drawing board or the like, is formed integral with the head 2, and extends from the ap roximate center of one edge of the head. fhe tongue or prong is then bent downwardly as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 to substantially right angles to the head 2, and it is apparent that the surface 4 of the tongue or prong is fiat.
Any desired shape may be given the head 2, according to the die employed for stamping the tacks. As an example of one shape which has artistic as well as practical de si n, is that shown in Figs. 4 and 5.
n Fig. 6, I show a still further modified form wherein only a portion of the body 2 lies flat on the same plane with the paper which is being held in place by a thumb tack. The balance of the body 2 being upwardly inclined and the prong 3 thereof bent at substantially ri ht angles to that portion of the body whic 1 is in a plane parallel to the plane of the drawing board or the paper which is to be held in place.
Having now set forth the objects and na-' ture of my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and of my own invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,-
A thumb tack comprising a stamping from sheet metal in the form of a head and a tapering pointed tongue extending from one edge thereof, said tongue being bent downwardly from the central portion of the edge and at substantially right angles to said head and provided with a flat surface disposed toward said head substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand on this 11th day of February, A. D. 1919.
YOKICHI KINOSHITA.
