Description

HOLLOW PLASTIC CONTAINER Filed Feb. 11, 1953 INVENTOR.
g firiz 72f? United States Patent HOLLOW PLASTIC CONTAINER Albert E. Karp, New York, N. Y., Creations, Inc., Long Island City, of New York assignor to Majestic N. Y., a corporation This invention relates to plastic signs, and more particularly to sectional plastic signs, the sections of which are secured together by means of clips.
Plastic sectional pieces commonly have flat rims disposed at a right angle from the body of the plastic piece. The fiat rims of the sectional pieces are secured together by conventional spn'ng clips, rivets, and other commonly used means.
It is an object of this invention to provide a novel plastic object made from more than one plastic section.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a novel plastic rim adapted to engage a second plastic rim.
It is another object of this invention to provide novel spring clips adapted to co-act with a novel plastic rim to grip the rim of a second plastic piece.
It is still another object of this invention to provide a novel spring clip adapted for use with plastic material.
These and other objects of this invention will become apparent upon reading the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a plastic object having two sections and provided with spring clips secured to one of the sections,
Fig. 2 is a top perspective view of the clip,
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the clip and looking upwardly from below the plane of the clip, and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken through the closed rim of a plastic object consisting of two sections.
Referring to the drawing, a plastic object, for example, an advertising sign adapted to contain an illuminating electric light bulb, is made of a first section 1 and a second section 2. Section 1 is provided with flat side wall 3 having fiat planar interior surfaces adjacent the edges of said side wall.
The section 1 is provided with a peripheral U-shaped channel rim, being formed by reversing the ends of the fiat side walls exteriorly over the side wall 4.
As shown in Fig. 4, the side wall 4 is disposed at a right angle to form the bottom wall 5 of the U-shaped channel. The bottom wall 5 of said U-shaped channel is integral with a channel wall 6, said channel wall 6 being disposed over and parallel to side Wall 4.
A spring clip 7, is made from spring steel and consists of a leg piece 8 having an aperture 9 therein. The leg piece 8 is disposed at substantially a right angle to spring leg 10, which leg is integrally joined by a loop to an opposed inwardly angulared leg 11. Leg 11 is provided with one or more grippers 12 adapted to grip or bite into a plastic sheet disposed adjacent thereto. Leg 11 is further provided with an outwardly disposed flare piece 12x, located substantially over leg 8, thereby providing easy insertion of plastic sheet material into the loop between legs 10 and 11 of spring 7.
The grippers 12 are formed by pressing a portion of leg 11 inwardly toward leg 10. The die used for making the grippers is a V-shaped arcuate die adapted to provide grippers 12 with a sharp biting point 13 and a curvatured sloping surface 14. The surface 14 gradually slopes away from leg 11 to point 13, so that a plastic sheet forced into the loop of clip 7 will slide against surface 14 while forcing leg 11 away from leg 10.
Moreover, as shown in Fig. 4, the clips 7 are secured to the bottom wall 5 by means of rivets 15 which pass through aperture 9 of the clip.
In securing the two plastic sections in firm grip relationship to one another, the wall 3 of section 1 is slipped over wall 6 of section 1 and against the spring action of leg 11 clips 7 co-acting with grippers 12. Also since the plastic is relatively soft and the steel hard, the gripper points 14 bite into the adjacent plastic surface of side wall 3. Fig. 4 shows the manner in which the grippers 12 bite into the plastic material. It can be easily seen that removal of section 2 is diflicult because side wall 3 must be pulled away against the bite of the grippers 12.
The combined sections of the plastic object, secured together by the grippers, presents a unitary display sign, the sections of which are firmly secured together.
While this invention has been illustrated by an embodiment of a display sign and by an illustrative spring clip, the scope thereof is not to be limited to this embodiment but only by the claims herein.
Having described my invention, What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patents is as follows:
1. A plastic rectangular object made from two mateable sections comprising a first container section having a bottom and a peripheral continuous side wall having interior and exterior fiat surfaces adjacent its edge, and a second mateable container section having a U-shaped channel rim about its periphery, said rim having a flat exterior channel wall disposed within said first section and contiguous to said interior surface of said side wall thereof, and a plurality of spring clips, each clip being secured to the interior of said U-shaped rim and grippingly engaging said exterior surface of said first section, for holding said sections together.
2. A plastic box made from two mateable sections comprising a first section having a peripheral continuous side wall having interior and exterior flat surfaces adjacent its edge, and a second mateable section having a U-shaped channel rim about its periphery, the exterior channel wall of said U-shaped channel rim being disposed within said first section and contiguous to said interior surface of said side wall thereof, and a plurality of spring clips fixedly secured to the bottom Wall of the U- shaped rim in spaced-apart relation, each of said spring clips having a loop disposed over the exterior channel wall of said rim said loop being provided with at least one gripper adapted to engage plastic sheet material constituting said first section side wall disposed over said channel wall.
