To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRED C. STAVER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Avis, in the county of Clinton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the'accompanying drawings. 1
This invention relates to combination locks, and has for its object to provide a device of this character having a sliding bolt operated by a sliding plunger, the sliding plunger being operable only when the sliding bolt is released by the locking combina tion. I
Another object of the invention is to provide a sliding locking bolt including an extension having a cam surface, and a sliding plunger including a cam surfaced head for moving the bolt from its locked position,
and spring means for forcing the extension to return the plunger to its former position.
These objects are attained by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view; Fig. 2 is a top'plan with the upper plate, slide plunger and operating knob removed; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the combination working ring, operating knob and sliding plunger for opening the lock;

Referring to the drawings, 5 indicates an upper plate and 6 a lower plate. Secured to the upper plate is a spindle 7, having a groove 8.' This spindle is intended to sup ort the combination mechanism. R0tatably mounted in a center opening 9 in the spindle 7. is a shaft 10 having an operating knob 11 including a flange 12 provided with an indicating mark 13, which registers with indications on an adjacent ring 14 carried by the door on which the lock is used. The remaining end of the shaft 10 is provided with a plate 15. Botat'ably mounted on the spindle 7 is a plurality of combination disks 16, 17 and 18. V The disk 16 has'a peripheral recess 19 and a plurality of. openings 20 in one ofwhich a pin 21 is secured. The disk 17 has a semi-circular slot 21, a plurality of openings 22 and a peripheral recess 23. Disposed in one of the openings 22 is apin 24. The disk 18 has a semi-circular slot 25 and a peripheral recess 26. The pin21 of the disk 16 is intended to be disposed in the slot 21' of the disk 17, while the pin 24 of the disk 17 is intended to be disposed in the slot 25. A washer 27 having an inwardly extending lug 28 is disposed between each of thedisks, and has its lug 28 engagedin the slot 8 of the spindle 7 toprevent rotation of the washer. The plate 15 of the shaft 10 is secured to the disk 16 and is intended to rotate said disk. The remaining disks are rotated by the pins 21 and 24.
The openings 20 and 22 in the disks 16 and 17 are intended to receive the pins 21 and 24 when it is desired to change the combination.
A sleeve 29 is carried by the plate 5 and is intended to support a sliding plunger 30 having at one end an operating knob 31 and at its other end a head 32. One end of the head 32 is dove-tailed as at 33. The head is also beveled as at 34 to provide a cam surface. Carried by the plate 5 is a guide plate 35 having a dove-tailed groove 36 adapted to receive the dove-tailed ends of the head .32, to position and guide the same.
This plungeris slidable in the sleeve 29 to operate the locking bolt of the look when the bolt is releasedby the combination mechanism.
Carried by the plate 6 is a pair of longitudinally L-shaped guide bars 37 adapted to receive the sliding bolt 38. A pin 37 depends from each guide member and is adapted to engage openings 36' in the guide plate 35 to hold the same in position.
The bolt 38 comprises a plate 39 having projecting from one end a locking head 40. The sides of the plate 39 extend beyond the sides of the head 40 and are intended to be received by the guide members 37 to slidably support the bolt. Projecting upwardly from the other end of the plate 39 in spaced relation to the sides thereof is an extension or locking wing 41, the base 42 of the extension being of greater width than the end 43, and is inclined or beveled toward the shaft 10 extends through the plate 6, while the pins 37 of the guide members 37 are positioned in openings 36 in the guide plate 35. The guide plate 35 extends transversely of the'bolt 38 between the extension 41 and the locking head40, so as to position the cam surfaced head 32 beneath and in abutting relation with the cam surface 46 of the extension 41, to permit the head 32 to limit the locking bolt in its locking movement,
and also to engage the rear portion of the locking head 40 to limit the unlocking movement of the bolt 38.
In operation, the operating knob 11 is rotated in one direction to cause the pins 21 and 24 to engage the disks 17 and'18 andpermit the shaft 10 to rotate all of the disks until the indicating mark 13 registers with a certain combination mark on the ring 14 and thereby position the recess 26 of the disk 18 in alinement with the extension 41. The knob is then rotated in the opposite direction so as to permit the pin 21 to engage the disk 17 and bring the recess 23 thereof in alinem'ent with the extension 41 and in registration withthe recess '26 of the disk 18. During this movement, the pin 24 moves idly in the slot 25 so as not to disturb the disk 18. The knob 11 is once more moved in the direction first mentioned, which causes the rotation of the disk 16 independently of the disks 17 and 18', the disks 16 being rotated until the indicating mark 13 registers with a combination mark on the ring 14. This eauses therecess 19 ofthe disk 16' to register withthe recesses 23 and 26- in alinement with the extension 41. .The sliding plunger 30 is then moved through the sleeve so as to engage the head 32 with the camsurface 4-6- of theextension 41,-and move the bolt by means of the extension into't'he registering peripheral recesses against the tension of the spring 47," and'thereby release the locking bolt. When the sliding plunger 30 is released, the force ofthe coil spring 47 forces the extension into engagement with the cam: surfaced head 34, and" moves the same through the sleeveto its formerposition and at the same time causes the head 40 of the bolt 38 to move to its locking position.
From the foregoing, it will be readily seen that this combination lock provides a novel sliding bolt, operated by a plunger which does not require any unusual effort on the part of the operator such as turning to the right or left, but is simply pushed inwardly after the combination has been worked, to release the sliding bolt. In addition tothis it provides additional security for the lock should the combination be' operated by an unauthorized person, as it has-the appear ance of a knob to be turned.
What is claimed isi 1. A-lock'comprising a series of combination disks, each having a recess,:-twoof said disks having a series of openings, a pin carried by each of the last mentioned disks, two of said disks having semi-circular slots adapted to receive the pin of the adjacent disk, means for rotating said first mentioned disk, a bolt, and a manually operated means arranged to move the bolt into the registering recesses of the disks.
2. In a' combination lock, the combination with a series of combination disks, each having a recess and op'eratively connected to each other, of a sliding bolt, a sliding plunger operatively engaged with the bolt to move the same into the registering recesses of the disks and a spring connected to said bolt for projecting the'same fromthe recesses in the disks when the plunger is released.
3. In a combination lock, the combination with a series of combination disks, each having a recess and operatively connected to each other, of a sliding bolt], an extension carried by said bolt and arranged to enter the recesses of the disks, a sliding plunger intersecting said bolt and operatively engaged with the extension to move the same into the recesses of the disks and aspring connected to the extension for ejecting the same from said recesses and disengaging the plunger from the'extension when the latter is released. 7
4. In a combination lock, the combination with a series of combination disks, each having a peripheral recess and operatively connected to each other, of a sliding bolt, an extension carried by said bolt and arranged to enter the recesses ofthe disks, a sliding plunger intersecting said bolt andoperatively engaged with the extension to move the same into the peripheral recesses of the disks and a spring connected to the extension for projecting the same from said recesses and disengag ing the plunger from the extension when the latter is released, the plungerlimiting the locking movement of the'bolt.
. 5'. In a combinationlock, thecombination with a series of combination disks, each having a peripheral recess and operatively connected to each other, of a sliding bolt having a projecting looking head at one end, and an extension at its other end, and a sliding plunger intersecting said bolt between .the locking head and the extension, and arranged to operatively engage the extension to move the same into the peripheral recesses of the disks.
6. In a combination lock, the combination with a series of combination disks, each having a peripheral recess and operatively connected to each other, of a sliding bolt having a projecting locking head at one end, and an extension at its other end, and a sliding plunger intersecting said bolt between the locking head and the extension, and arranged to operatively engage the extension to move the same into the peripheral recesses of the disks, said extension and sliding plunger having abutting cam surfaces.
7. A look comprising a locking member shiftable to projected and retracted positions, manually operable means intersecting the bolt for shifting the bolt to a retracted position, means for projecting the bolt upon release of the manually operable means, and a plurality of tumblers normally preventing the retraction of the bolt and manually shiftable into position to permit the retraction of the bolt.
8. A look comprising a locking member shiftable to projected and retracted positions, manually operable means intersecting the bolt for shifting the bolt to a retracted position, means for projecting the bolt upon release of the manually operable means, and a plurality of tumblers normally preventing the retract-Tn of the bolt and manually shiftable into position to permit the retraction of the bolt, said tumblers preventing operation of the manually operable means when the bolt is in its proj eoted position.
9. A look comprising a locking member shiftable to projected and retracted positions, means intersecting said bolt and laterally movable with respect to the bolt for shifting said bolt to a retracted position, means for projecting the bolt upon release of the first mentioned means, a plurality of tumblers normally preventing retraction of the bolt and manually shiftable into position to permit retraction of the bolt,,and a' member intersecting the bolt, said member guiding the first mentioned means and limiting the retracting movement of the bolt. 10. A lock comprising a locking member shiftable to projected and retracted positions, means intersecting and engaging the bolt at all times, said means being movable for shifting the bolt to a retracted position, means for projecting and causing the bolt to move the first mentioned means upon release of said first named means, and a plurality of tumblers normally preventing retraction of the bolt and manually shiftable into position to permit retraction of the bolt.
