To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, PETER H. S'rosncn, citizen of Russia, residing Iat Cliside, county of Bergen, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement- 1n Combination-Locks, of which the followlng is a specication.
This invention relates to locks, and particularly to those adapted for use on a trunk, bureau or similiar article.
@ne of the objects is 'rto provide a lock suitable for use on-a trunk, bureau, cablnet, wall-sa fe, or similar article and one in whlch a bolt-lock is so combined with a movable permutation device as to oder e'ective resistance against being picked or opened except by one who knows the comblnatlonof the permutation device, the proper manner ont manipulating the same, and uses a particular key.
A further object is to provide a lock conof interlocking boltlocks and one which cannot be unlocked except by following, in a proper order, a certain sequence of manipulation of the boltlocks.
A further object is to rovide a lock comprising a plurality of bined with a permutation device that the permutation device must rst be set and properl manipulated before any of said bolt-loc s may be opened,-and then fthe bolts must be operated in a certain sequence to open the lock itself.
Ano-ther object is to providea lock of the above type which, after being locked with the key, holds Ithe key against removal until the permutation device is set and manipulated in a certain manner.
Further objects include the provision of a lock of the above Itype which comprises a minimum of parts; one which may be easily and inexpensively manufactured; and` one which is simple to operate, and at the same time renders secure protection.

l't will be noticed that the drawings show a lock comprising, in combination, three separate bolt-lock mechanisms, and a permutation device, all suitably contained in a box or casing having a -base plate 1 and a cover plate 2. rlhe lock mechanism shown at the right in the drawings comprises a.
slidable bolt-bar 3 having bolt 4 and a stump 5 extending into superimposed slots 6 of two tumbler plates 7 and 8, respectively, each pivotally mounted on the base plate 1 at 9, and respectively held, by means of springs 10 and 1l attached to the tumblers and to posts 12 and 13 carried on base l to prevent movement of the bolt from locked or unlocked position unless the tumblers 7 and 8 are raised to permit sliding of stump 5 in slots 6. Bolt-bar 3 is provided with a perforation 14 ladapted to receive a key 15 when inserted through key-hole 16 in the casing, the perforation being so shaped and the tumblers 7 and 8 so cut and positioned relative to perforation 14 that proper movement of the key 15 will manipulate the tumblers 7 and 8 and eiiect locking or unlocking movement of the bolt 4, a step of key 15 being adapted to enter a recess 17 (shown in dotted lines) of said perforation 14 during such movements. Perforatio'n 14 is also shaped so that upon a reverse movement of the key in the proper direction the key lwill contact with the bolt-bar 3 outside ot the' recess 17, vand will thereby be "prevented from actuating the tumblers 7 and 8 or bolt 4; A second lock mechanism comprises boltbar 18, pivoted -to base 1 at 19, and comprises a -bolt portion 20. A third lock mechanism comprises bolt-bar 2l also pivoted to base 1 at 19, and comprises bolt portion 22. Boltbars 18 and 21 are mounted in opposite and superimposed relation, bolt-bar 21 being above bolt-bar 18 and both are coitinually urged into locked position by spring 23 mounted on base 1 as at 24. A space is provided between bolt-bars 18 and 21 to receive a dormant key 25 mounted on and projecting through the casing 2 and provided with knob 26, a one-quarter turn of which causes unlocking or locking movement of the bolts 20 and 22 simultaneously. Bolt-bar 18 and bolt-bar 3, however, when in locked position, abut each other, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, so that unlocking movement of bolt-bars 18 and 21 may not be had while bolt-bar 3 is in locked position.
A pair of concentric disks 27 and 28 are normally positioned, abutting bolt-ban 21 when in locked position, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, so as to prevent unlocking movement of bolts 20 and 22 until these disks have been moved out of the path of bolt-bar 21, as shown in Figs. 4, 5 andy 6. Disks 27 and 28 form part of a permutation device and are' mounted on collars 29 and 30, respectively, extending through cover plate 2 (see Fig. 6) for independent rotation and for simultaneous movement toward and away from base 1. Disks 27 and 28 contain a plurality of similar perforations 31 and 32, respectively, perforations 31 being adapted to be brought into register with perforations 32 by independent rotation of disks 27 and 28,'and both sets of perforations adapted to be brought in register with similarly placed studs 33 lixed on base 1, so that when the perforations of both disks and studs 33 are all in register, disks 27 and 28 may be moved downward over studs 33 and out of normal position and out ofthe path of movement of bolt-bar 21 to permit unlocking movement l of bolt 22, but when perforations 31 and 32 are not in register with each other or with studs 33, the studs will arrest the movement of the disks out of normal position and prevent unlocking movement of bolt-bar 21 and bolts 20 and 22. A spiral spring 34 between disk 27 and base 1 continually urges the permutation device into normal position. V
A latch comprising latch bar 35, pivotally mounted on base 1 as at 36 and carrying a lug 37 is adapted to enter a recess 38 in bolt- 'bar 3 to prevent unlocking movement of bolt-bar 3, and into perforation 14 to contact with and prevent turning of the key 15 in unlocking direction to contact with the tumblers 7 and 8 or bolt-bar, as shown in Fig. 2, or -to prevent removal of the key 15 if positioned on the other side of lug 37. Lug 37 may be continually urged to enter recess 38 by upward pressure of. spring 50 mounted on base 1 at 51 against the latch bar 35 at 52. Downward movement of disks 27 and 28 lreleases the latch to lift lug 37 out of recess 38 and permits unlocking movement of bolt-bar 3, the turning of 'key 15 to unlock or the removal of key 15 after shooting the bolt.
Collar 30 carries knob 39 and dial 40, to rotate with disk 28, and collar 29 carries knob 41 and dial 42 to rotate with disk 27.
The dials 40 and 42 carry the usual marking or combination numbers and are independently rotatable in respect to a mark 43 on the cover plate 2 to indicate when the perforations of disks 27 and 28 and studs 33 are in register with each other and with studs 33, and show when the permutation device is set. i
Studs 33 may be mounted on a ring or plate 44 which may be removably screwed to base 1 as at 45, so that the plate and Studs may be moved, thereby requiring a different combination of numbers or dials 40 and 42 to come opposite mark 43 to indicate that the permutation device is set.

In operation the permutation device is lirst set byturning knobs 39 and 41 and the dials 42 and 43 carried thereby until the proper numerals on the dials are opposite mark 43 and indicate that the device is set. Then the device is pushed inwardly, bringing the disks 27 and 28 over studs 33 and out of the path of bolt-bar 21. This movement also lifts lug 37 `to permit of the next operation, which comprises inserting and turning key 15 and'thereby open lock 4, after which, and with the permutation device still pressed inward, locks 20` and 22 may be opened by turning knob 26.
A quarter turn of knob 26 will shoot locks 2O and 22,. and by turning the key 15, lock 4 may be shot but this key may not then be removed unless 'the permutation device is set and moved inwardly to hold lug 37 out of the path of the key. v
It is vto be understood that the terms boltbar and bolt member as used throughout this specification and in the appended claims refer only to such members which comprise a hasp-engaging or keeper-engaging bolt as that word is usually employed in the lock art, and not to any other member which may have the general shape of a bolt when considered apart from this art.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. device of the character described, comprising, in combination, three or more hasp or keeper engaging bolt members, and movable means adapted, when in a predetermined position, to prevent. unlocking movement of three of said bolt members.
2. 'device of the character described, comprising, in combination, a plurality,Tv of liti hasp or navman hasp or keeper enga bolt members, movable means adapted, when in a predetered position, to prevent unlocking move-I ment of one .of said bolt members, said means comprising a permutation device adapted, when set, to be moved out of said predetermined position to permit unlock-l ing movement of said bolt members.

d. A device of the character described comprising, in combination, three or morei adapted to be moved to eect simultaneous actuation of said bolt members, and a lthird hasp or keeper engaging bolt member adapted, when in a predetermined position, to
. prevent actuation of one of said pair of 'titl bolt members into open position. l
6. A device oi the character described, comprising, in combination, a pair of bolt members, a key adapted to be moved to effeet simultaneous actuation of said bolt members, movable means adapted, when in a predetermined position, to preventactuation of one of said members into open-position, and movable means adapted, when in a predetermined position, .to prevent actuation of the other of said members into open position.
7. A device of, thecharacter described, comprising, in combination, a
mechanism adapted, when inglocked position, to prevent movement of one of said bolt members into unlocked position, and
movable means comprising a permutation device adapted, when in normal position, -to prevent movement of the other bolt member into unlocked position.
8. A device of the character described, comprising, lin combination a pair of bolt members, movable means comprising a lock mechanism adapted, when in locked posilock mec pair of bolt fmembers, movable means comprising a lock 'tion,fto prevent movement of one ofy said bolt members into .unlocked position, movable means comprising a permutation device adapted, when in vnormal position, to prevent movement of the other bolt member into unlocked position, actuating means for said lock mechanism, and means adapted to render said actuating means inoperative to edect unlocking movement of said lock mechanism.
9. A device of the character described, comprising, incombination, a pair of bolt members, movable means comprising a lock mechanism adapted, when in locked position,
to prevent movement of one of saidV bolt members into unlocked position, movable means comprising a. permutation device adapted, when in normal position, to revent movement of the other bolt member into unlocked osition, actuating means for said hanism, and means adapted to render 1' said actuating' means inoperative to edect unlocking movement of said lock mechanism, and movable means comprising 4a` permutation device being adapted, when set, to be moved to 4render said lock mechanism responsive to said actuating means.
10. A device of the character described, comprising, in combination, a pair of bolt members, movable means comprising a lock mechanism adapted, when in locked position,
to prevent `movement of one of said bolt members into unlocked position, a key, adapted by its movement, to place said lock mechanism in unlocked position, spring means adapted to engage said lock mechanism, when-in locked position, to prevent said lock mechanism being placed 1n unlocked position by means ot said key, movable means comprising a permutation device adapted to prevent movement of the other of said bolt members into unlocked posilimi tion and adapted when set, to be moved to 'permit-movement otsaid secondbolt member into unlocked position and to disengage said spring means from said lock mechanism to permit actuation of said lock mechanism into unlocked position by said key.

comprising, in combination, a movable bolt tilt@ bar comprising a bolt, a key adapted to engage said bolt bar to cause said bolt to move into locked 0r `unlockedd position, spring means comprising a latch adapted to engage said bolt bar and to prevent engagement of said bolt bar by said key, and means comprising a permutation device adapted,
when set, to be moved to disengage said latch from said bolt bar and permit said bolt to be opened by means of said key.
