citizen of the United States, residing atl Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful )improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification.
One object of my invention is vtoprovide an improved lock which will be particularl7 well adapted to use as a door lock and which can be released after thek manipulation of vmembers to set up a. predetermined combination of elements and thereby release a selective bolt.
Another object of my invention is to construct the parts in such ma-nner that unless a person knows the combination of manual movements necessary to impart to said members', it is practically impossible, by sense of `@hearing or touch, even for an expert, to redoor having my improved lock thereon,

Referring to the drawings, 11 represents a door; one edge thereof having agcav'ity 12 in which fits a casiiig 13. This kcasing is preferably made rectangular and'at one end includes a plate 14 providing a bearing 15 for one end of a shaft 16. The opposite end of the shaft 16 is mounted in a bearing 17 in a removable front plate 18. This plate 18 may be'secured tothe. door and forms a closure for the front end of the casing. The casing 13 provides ya horizontal guideway 19 for an elongated selective boltor tumbler 20 and a main locking bolt 21. These bolts are arranged side by side; the selective bolt being positioned entirely within the casing while themain locking bolt 21 has a beveled end portion 22 whichextendsout of a hole 23 in the front plate 18. This beveled portion 22 may enter a keeper of any character (not illustrated) for the purpose of keeping the doorlocked in the usual manner. The main bolt 21 at its rear end has an angularly bent ange 24 which is backed by a coil sprin 25 mounted in a recess 26 in the casing 13. his spring normally tends to push the main bolt into its locking vposition with the end'22 extending out of the casing. The rear end of the selective bolt 20 is also adapted under certain conditions to engage the flange 24 and when the selective bolt is moved rearwardly, it will move the main bolt 21 inwardly to unlock the door. The main bolt 21 can be moved independently of the selective bolt 2O through the medium of an inner knob 27 which has a spindle 28 provided with an arm 29; said arm being adapted to engage a pin 30, shown inFigure 3, for the purpose of operatingfthe main bolt from the yinside of the door independently of any selective mechanism. i
The shaft 16 has a' longitudinally kextending groove or key-way 31 and a plurality of annularly extendinggrooves 32 spaced apart within its length and forming interruptions in'thelength of the key-way 31.` .Each of a number of selectiveunits 33 includes a disk or tumbler 34 and a ratchet wheel 35 detachably secured together side by side by means of screws 36 shown in Figure 4. These units have registering axial holes 37 into which project inwardly projecting lugs 38.

It will be noted that the units 33 can turn on the shaft y16 through an are slightly less than 360o or, in other words, from a position in which the lugs 3S abut one side of the key 39 to a position where they abut the opposite side or' the key 39.
It will be further noted that by positioning the lugs 38 in the grooves 32 they will be prevented from longitudinal movement with respect to the shaft 16 after the key 39 is once inserted. Each ot' the disks 34 has a concaved notch 40 in its peripheral edge extending from one face to the other. These notches 4() occupy different angular. positions relatively to the lug of the same unit in which the notch 40 is formed. This arrangement can be predetermined and under certain conditions hereinafter described the notches 40 of all of the units can be brought into alignment, as shown in Figure 4, with the upper edge of the selective bolt 2() therein so that the selective bolt can be slid lengthwise with respect to the units.
The selective bolt 2() has a number ot transverse notches 41 in its convex upper edge of lengths substantially equal to the thicknesses of the respective disks so that the diskscan extend therein, as shown in `Figure 2, and when the notches 40 of the Vdisks are outv of register with the selective bolt 20, it will be impossible for the. latter to move lengthwise since the opposed ends or" the notches 41 will embrace the sides of the disks, rlhe units 33 can be rotated by means of spring-pressed buttons 42 which can be arranged in a row in the door as shown in Figure 1. These buttons 42 are connected to rods 43 which have pawls 44 respectively in alignment with the ratchet wheels rlhus for every push of the buttons 42 their respective ratchet wheels will be rotated to the extent oi"- one tooth and by knowing previously the setting of thedisks relatively to their ratchet wheels, all of the notches 40 can be brought into register with the selective bolt 2O by pushing the buttons a number of times in accordance with the combination of the setting, after which the main bolt 21 can. be moved by turning the outside knob 45; said outside knob having a spindle 4G to which is connected an arm 4T adapted to engage a pin 48 on the selective bolt 20. The selective bolt can thus be moved lengthwise into the position shown in .Figure 4 and in so doing` the inner end of the selective bolt will move the tlange 24 ot the main bolt 21 and the latter will be withdrawn `trom its keeper.
Upon the release oi the knob 45 the spring 25 will move the main bolt outwardly and will also move the selective bolt in the position in which its notches 41 respectively register with the disks 34 ot the units and the units can be re-set through the medium of a knurled handle 49 which has a rod 50 leading into the casing 13. The rod 50 has a helical or worm gear 51 thereon which meshes with another helical or Wormv gear 52 secured to the shaft 16. In this manner the shaft can. be rotated until the key 39 picks up the lugs 3S, during the rotation of the shaft, and conveys the various units to their initial starting position, after which the knurled handle can be returned to its initial position as will also be the key 39 and the shaft 16.
As a means for determining the `amount of movement necessary to impart to the handle 49, I provide the rod 50 with a pin 53 to strike afixed projection 54 at the inside of the casing 13. Thus in turning the knurled handle to re-set kthe units, the haudle 49 is turned as far as possible in onedi rection and then turned as ufar, ,as possible in the opposite direction so as to move the key 39 out oi the wa-yof the lugs 38 where it is possible or necessary tov again operate the device, the device being thereby reset to a lockingposition for operation to released or unlocking position as described.

When the handle 45 is released the Yspring 215 will return the bolts to their normal positions and by turning the handle 49the `disks and ratchets will be returned to their normal positions. The bolt-21 can be moved independently of the selective inechanismyby turning the inner knob 27 and the mere closing of the door willcause the main bolt to be pushed againstthe spring25 until -thenend 22 of the main bolt passes into register with the keeper, after whichv thespring25 `will move the main bolt into the keeper and the door will kbe locked.
To guard against anyperson attempting to open the door by the sense of touch, I
provide each of the disks 34 withy one or more decoy recesses l56 which have the shape of the notches 40 but do not extend entirely through the disk. Thus if a person by pushingthe buttons Li9 feelsor hears any actionof the selective bolt 20, such for eX- ample as would indicate the registry of the selective bolt with a notch, there is practically no possibility of that person securing the combination for the reason that he does not know whether it is one of the proper notches 40 or one of the fooling or deceptive recesses 56 which is in register with the selective bolt 20.
While I have described my invention as taking a particular form, it will be understood that the various parts of my invention may be changed without departing from the spirit thereof, and hence I do not limit myself 'to the precise construction set forth, but consider that I am at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly come' within the scope of the appended claims.

Lock mechanism including a selective bolt; selective units for co-acting with said selective bolt; a shaft supporting said selective units and havingannular grooves and a key-way interrupted in its length by said grooves, said units having lugsv adapted to slide through said key-way into said grooves; a key adapted t'o be inserted within said key-way after the lugs of the selective units have been moved in said annular grooves out of registry with said key-way; and means for operating said selective units whereby they"r are moved into and out of lockingengage'- i ment with said selective bolt, said selective bolt having notches therein in which portions of said selective units can engage 'to prevent movement thereof, said portions of the selective units having notches for yregistry with said selective bolt due to the operation of said actuating means 'whereby the selective bolt can be moved; substantially as described.

Lock mechanism including a selective bolt selec-tive lunits for co-acting with said selective bolt; a shaft supporting said selective units and having annularrgrooves and vmeans for 'operating said selective units whereby they' are moved into and out ofk said 1 locking .engagement with said selective bolt, said selective' bolt having notches therein in which portions of said selective units can engage to prevent movement thereof, said portions of the selective units having vnotchesfor registry with said selective bolt dueto the operation of said actuating means whereby the selective bolt can be moved;` and independent means for actuating said shaft whereby the selective unitscan betreturned to their normal positions; substantially as described. i

Lock mechanism including a main bolt; a selective bolt; selective members having notches; means for independently moving said selective members to cause said notches to register' with said selective bolt and said selective bolt to move therethrough; means for normally moving the main bolt and selective bolt to locking position; means for returning said selective members to their normal positions with the notches out of register with said selective bolt; means for movbolt; selective units including plain disks, said disks being movable relative to the bolt and having peripheral notches through Which a portion of the selective bolt can move; said disks also having decoy notches in the lateral faces thereof into which the selective bolt can move When the notches are out oi' alignment; substantially as described.

Lock mechanism including a selective bolt; selective units for izo-acting with 'said selective bolt; a shaft supporting said selective units and having grooves and a kcyway interrupted in its length by said grooves, said units having means to engage the grooves and keyWay and entering said grooves through said keyway; means adapted to be inserted within said keyivay after said unit means have moved into said grooves to limit the rotation of said units; and stopping means for'operating said selective units whereby they may be moved into and out of locking engagement with said selective bolt; substantially as described.

Lock mechanism including a selective bolt; selective units for co-acting With said selective bolt; a shaft supporting said selective units and having grooves and a keyivay interrupted in its length by said grooves; `said units having means to engage the grooves and keyway and entering said grooves. through said keyivay; means adapt ed to be inserted. Within said keyway after said unit means have moved into said grooves to limit the rotation of said units; means for operating said selective units whereby they may be moved into and out ot locking engagementy with said selective bolt; and means for turning the shaft and simultaneously arranging the selective units in a locking or unlocking position; substantially as described.

Lock mechanism including a main bolt; a selective bolt in sliding contact With said main bolt; selective units movable into and out of locking engagement With said selectivefbolt, said main bolt having a. portion for direct abutment with said selective notches and including disks having smooth peripheral edges; said disks each having a plurality of decoy notches in one side face and a peripheral recess corresponiling in shape to said notches; means for moving said disks to bring the recesses into register with the notches oi the selective. bolt; and
means for moving said selective bolt; substantially as described.

Lock mechanism including a main bolt having` a flange portion; a selective bolt adapted at one end to engage said 'flanged portion. and having notches therein spared apart; selective units independently movable; supporting means for said units, said units having portions movable into said notches and including` disks having smooth peripheral edges, said disks each having `a plurality of decoy notches in one side taco and a peripheral recess corresponding in shape to said notches; means for moving said disks to bring` the recesses into register with the notches ot' the selective bolt; means for moving said selective bolt; means co-opera tive between the main bolt and selective bolt whereby movement of the selective bolt in one direction will move the main bolt to au unlocking position; and means for siinuitaneously ii'ioving said disks to a predetermined position; substantially as described.
