Another object is toprovide a construction in a lock of the above character whereby theparts may be readily constructed and assembled, and whereby the keyless lock may be operated as a combination lock 1 as by depressing a plurality of push pins. one or i more times, and in which the combination of the lock may be readily changed.
Another object is to provide a combined latch and combination or permutation lock for doors in which the door will be in a locked condition on one side and in unlocked condition on the other side.
With the foregoing objects in View, together with such other objects and advantages as may subsequently appear, my present invention resides in employing the parts, or their equivalents, and thelcombination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which t t Figure 1 is a view in section and end elevation of a door-lock. o

. Fig. 9 is a perspective View of :a combination reminder.
Morespecifically 10 indicates the casing of a door-lock which is fittedwith a latch 11, a bolt 12, a transverse shaft 13,for operating the latch, and ihnerand outer knobs 14; and 15 respectively for turning the shaft,
the outer knob being normally in such relation to the shaft and catch that it may be turned; without actuating the catch or bolt. The outer knobis hollow and is fitted with a keyless 'lock 16 by which this knob or the shaft may be placed in operative relation to the latch.
In thefform of the invention shown. in Figures 1 and 2, the knobs are engaged with the shaft and the latter is moveable longitudinally in respect to the knobs to throw it in and out of operative relation to either the latch or bolt and the outer knob is connected to the shaft at all times, whileinthe modified. form shown in Fig. 3, the inner knob is fixed on the shaft which is always in operative relation to the catch, and the outer knob is adapted to be thrown in and out of engagement with the shaft.
The outer knob 15 is fitted with a hub 17 which bears in a collar18 on the lock casing and is formed with a peripherial channel 19 engaged by a pin or screw 20 on the collar to hold the knob 15 against longitudinal movement, yet permit -;its being rotated. The innerknob is provided with a hub 21, which, iwhen the shaft is reciprocal, bears in a collar 22 on the lock casing and is formed with a peripheral channel 24 engaged by a screw 25 onthe collar to hold the knob 14c againstlongitudinal movement yet with the arm, the shaft niayfbe rotated to dispose the finger'in front of thearm to retract thelatch in opposition to. asprin'g32 the arm bearing against a shoulder 33 on the latch during this operation, but on retating the shaft in an opposite direction the finger will rock the arm and pass freely therebeneath without operating the latch, which is normally maintained in its forward position by the spring 32. When it is desired to actuate the bolt the shaft 13 is moved longitudinally to align the finger 28 and studs 29-80 whereupon on rotation of the shaft the finger may engage stud 29 to advance the bolt or engage stud 30 to retract the bolt.
Any suitable means may be employed for effecting engagement betweenthe shaft 13 and knobs 14 and 15 whereby the shaft may "be moved longitudinally in the knobs and yet remain in rotative engagement therewith, but which is here shown as accomplished by forming the shaft square and providing thehubs'of the knobs with square openings to receive the shaft.
Theshaft isnormally disposed inits latch operating position by means of a spring 34 which bears between the hub 17 and a flange 35 on the shaft.
As a means for enabling a person ,to effect longitudinal movement of .the shaft from the inside 'of the door, the inner end of the shaft is fitted with a head 36' projecting through thejknob, which has a shoulder 37 to abut against the knob to limit outward movement of the shaft under action of the spring 34. i
In the form of the invention shown in Fig. 3, a .collar3 8 is fixed on the shaft 13 and has a finger'39 arranged in operative relation to a stud 40 on the'latch ll the shaft being held against longitudinal movement by a' pin 41 on the casing 10 extending into a periph'eral channel 42' on the shaft. The outer end of the shaft is formed with a channel .43 to receive a tongue 44 on a slide-bar 45 mounted in the hub for longitudinal reciprocal movement and held against rotation relative to the knob. A spring 46 is arranged to act .on the bar and normally hold the tongue out of engagement with the slot. The lock bolt 12 shown in the drawing in Figure 3 may be operated by a key in' the manner common to door looks, or may be eliminated, as the operation of the bolt 12 is not affected by the lock mechanism controlling the latch bolt 11.
It will now be seen in the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, that when the shaft 13 is in its normal advanced position the latch may be operated by turningeither the inner or outer knobsand that the bolt 12 cannot be operated without first retracting the shaft 13 to position the finger 28 in'alignm'ent llih S S 29-3 61 1 1. ol and tha y ang ment sho n n F g- .3, the

cann t be pej eclby the oute k b ith Means are provided controlled by the keyless lock, whereby retraction of the members 13 or 45 may be manually effected from the outside of the door to unlock the latter by turning the knob 15, which means embodies a disk 47 mounted in the knob to have combined rotary and longitudinal movement relative thereto.
The mounting of the disk embodies a pair of oppositely inclined flanges 4849 projecting inwardly from opposite sides of the knob on the outer sides of which the inner face of the disk seats.
The circumferential periphery of the disk bears on an annular wall formed on the knob, a flange 50 on the disk being adapted to vabut against a shoulder 51 on the knob to limit inward movement of the disk. To advance or retract thedisk in relation to the knob, screw engagement is effected between the disk and knob by means of a bolt 52 extending transversely through a projection" in Figs. 1 and 3; the ends of flanges being spaced apart to permit the bolt being passed from the. outer to the inner sides thereof. It will now be seen that on turning the disk in one direction the bolt in riding on the inclined flanges will act to advance the disk inwardly so that the projection 58 on the' disk which bears {against the outer ends of the shaft 13 or bar 45 will act to advance theshaft .or bar in opposition to the springs "34 or 46.
Means are provided for effecting a locking, engagement between the bolt .and the knob to fasten the disk against rotation either in itsadvanced or retracted position, and embodies serrations 54 and 55 formed on the knob adjacent the undersides of the flanges 48 and 49; the projections 56 of the serrations 54 being arranged dimetrically opposite the depressions 57 of the serrations 55 so that when one end of the bolt rides over a projection 56 the bolt will be moved lengthwise so that its other end will extend "into a depression. 57. By locking the bolt in this position the disk will be held against turning. For this purpose I preferably employ a push-pin controlled locking mechathe slots 72 in the casing.
- combination.
reopen groove 62 and hasa series of circumferential channels 63, and mounted on-each tumbler is a spring pressed pin 64 which rides in a channel 63 and is adapted to be positioned in alignment with the groove to permit longitudinal movement of the bolt under action of a spring 65. When all the tumblers are arranged with the pin 64 in alignment with the groove the bolt is free to move in either direction, but when one of the pins is out of alignment with the groove the bolt will be locked. i i y I A certainnumber of impulses must be imparted to each tumbler from a starting position to dispose thepins in the groove aligned position. To determine the starting position, a spring pressed indicator pin 66 is arranged in the disk and positioned to be actuated by each ratchet tooth as the tumbler is rotated. A filler 67 is provided to eX- tend into a recess between adjacent ratchet teeth to effect a lesser movement of the pin so that the position of the fillermay be readily ascertained, which filler is so disposed as to indicate the starting position.
As a means for reminding a person of the combination of impulses that are to be given the several push-pins to unlock the bolt 52, I provide the device shown in Fig. 9, which comprises a casing 68 containing a series of pins 69 mounted to rotate and held against longitudinal movement, which pins have screw threaded portions engaging sleeves 70 formed with points 71 extending through Numbered graduations 7 3 are arranged at the sides of the slots which are indicated by the pointer. When the combination of the lock is ascertained the pins 69 are turned to dispose the pointers adjacent the graduation bearing the number corresponding to the number of the This device can be carried on the person or placed in a convenient place, so that if the combination of impulses is forgotten, it is readily determined by glancing at the numbers indicated by the pointers in the slots.
The operation of the invention is apparent from the foregoing, it being seen that on turning the disk to move it inwardly the outer knob will be thrown into operative relation to the doorlock in which it may be maintained by locking the disk in its innermost position so that on turning the knob '15 the door may be unlocked. When the disk is in its outermost position the outer knob will be out of operative relation to the door lock and accordingly the lock cannot be unlocked from the outside of the door.
I claim:
