This invention relates to looks.
Its purpose is to providea lock which can be used, for instance at night, as a combination lock, and which by changing the position of some of the parts can be used at other times as an ordinary lock,operable by means of a key.
Extending through to the outside of the door is a part of the lock casing in which is a member which can be turned by inserting a key, which is properly cut and-formed, this member havingon the outside a series of numbers, such as are used on dial locks. By means of ashifting screw, the head of which projects through the back or inside of the door, the parts can be so shifted that merely by turning a key, inserted inithe memher at the outside of the door, the bolts can bewithdrawn andthe lock unlocked, or, by
' shifting the parts to another position, it is necessary not only to use the key to turn this member but, also, to turn it back and forth, as in a combination or dial lock. r
Preferably also, Iprovide on the inside a knob by turning which, under certain condi- *tions, the bolts can be thrown and the door locked or unlocked from the inside, without tlhel'use of a key, and without the use of a In the drawings, Fig. 1 is an elevation showing part of the door and casing from the outside with my lock in position with parts broken away, and the key shown in the lock. Fig. 9 is an elevation similar to Figs. 3, 4, and 7 showing the parts in position when the dials are turned to the position where the bolts would be withdrawn by their spring and the door would be unlocked, but showing the door locked from the inside by turning the inside knob.
Fig. 10 is a fragmentary view similar to Fig. 8 showing a-slightly different construction of the devicefor locking from the inside by turning the inside knob.
In the drawings, A represents a door, and
1, the casing frame, which is ordinarily of wood,'for the door. 2 represents the eyes, or perforated members, attached to casing 1 through which the bolts 20 of the lockpass when the door is locked.
The inside part of my lock, includes the substantially box-shaped metal casing G fastened on the inside of door A. as by means of four screws 4, 4, 4, 4. 5is a metal cover plate for casing G.
The look really comprises two parts. One is the casing G andthe parts carried in it, and the other is a cylindrical metal member, indicated generally by B, which extends through a hole 10 in door A. Thisincludes a tubular member which as shown carries onthe outside a plate 18 having'a marker line 15 extending down to cylindrical opening 13 for the key barrel 12 on the outside of which are the dial numbers indicated by 14 which cooperate with marker-lowhen the combination is being used with the key- 17 is the opening, for the key F bothlof K K K of a well-known typeof a turning rod 162 by Whichthe motion of the key barrel 12 and key F is 'transinitted'to the inside lock casing G.
19, 19, 19 are hollow pro ecti-onsirhm casing G which house bolts 20, 2,0; Thesegbolts;
are moved by the carriage 21 which connects with a coiled compression spring 22, the tend ency of which isto house bolts 20, 20in the parts 19, 19 and to keep the door unlocked.
These bolts must be positively thrown and kept housedorthe doorwiill be unlocked; I Carriage 21 is moved by means of a rocker arm M which at23is-connected tocarriage 21' by a link 27, said rocker arm beingpivoted at 24 to casing G and having pivoted in a slot: at its other end 25 the dog'26 located ina position, under the right conditions, to drop into the slotsv 7 6,76,.7 6 in the combination discs These discs are each-provided with small 4 screw or pin holeslike 71 in which there may be positioned" small: flat-filister-head cap 'screws or pins 72 and 73 which engageeach other as thediscs are turned, and the outer disk- K has an outside screw head. or'pin 70 which isarranged to engage or not to engage with an inside-pin 66, projecting from the inside of operating cam H.
- This operating cam H has a boss 61 in which is the slot62 to receive turning. rod- 162 and on its inside hasa cylindrical hole-1 61 which allows it to revolve on a discrspindle 26l'which projects from casing G as. shown in Fig. 5. I r Y Cam H can therefore turn on disc spindle 261 but can-not move in or out.

This tendenecy is stopped by the action of shiftingscrew 52 onthethickppart 53 ofplate 5.1.
The head of this shifting shrew projects fromthe back of easing G, andordinarily can be covered withtheSliding plate-4.51.
. Thekeeper latch L'is pivated 0m bl-Qck56 .3, 4, 5 and 6 or inside it so as to be engaged by pin 60 as shown in Figs. 7 and 8. Preferably a fiat latch spring'85. is used to g ve latch'La certain amount of resiliencyon 1ts pivot 80 to avoid damage in case screw 52 is used to. draw block, 56 back when cam H is in the way as when'the latch L and cam H are inthe. positionin. Figs. 4 and 6.
No damage can result if screw 52 is turned to release: bloclr 56yand move latch L out of engagement because the outward motionis only due to spring5 9, The inwardniotionof block 56 ispositive due-tot-ongue. 57*under the carriage 51. 1 1' J o i The parts are-so positioned that whenthe carrier plate 51 is moved'outwardly, o-r 'toiwa-rds the key F asin Fig.6 by means of screw 52, the outside pin 76 will be engaged by the inside pin 60 on cam When the carrier plate ismoved in the other *directionhow ever as in'Figs. 7'and 8 pin 7O mo vesaw'ay from the path of 60, but slot .82 of latch Lis moved into position so thatitwill be engaged by pin 60 when cam H is turned, and latch L will be so moved that its'head 81 will go over underneath do eeas see Fig-. 8, thus holding it out of slots 76, and thus locking the door by key F alone. f
When operated by-t-h'e'key alone, cam H, as it is turned, raises the dog 26, and also moves head'81 in underneath it, thus keeping the lock locked until cam H is turnedinthe other direction, when'pi-n 60"moves' head. 81- away from, under. dog 26uponY-which the spring 22 unlocks the device and the door.-
It will'be understood that cam H -can be turned only from the outside and by means ofthe turning rod. 162 which, asv shown'in Figs. 1, 6 and 7 can only turn when the'right key, such as F, is inserted in the barrel 12.
Then 'the'latch L is underneath or inside of cam H, as shown in Figs. 7 andS, the com-' 'bination dialsK K 'and'K areout' of action and pin 60 inside cam H, as cam H revolves, engages the slot 82' in latch L, andmoves it from the dotted line position showniin Fig. 8 atthe same time that the cam itself raises the dog 26 and thusrocks ar n M lockingthe door. Ki. a i? i ach.iz .ositioa that Pins and will engage as the key rod 162, can;
andQtherfpar serearmada-'- I also prefer to provide inside locking mechanism indicated as a whole by C.
This includes a knob 150 which is carried by a square shaft 151 which extends through into the inside and carries a locking finger 159 and an unlocking finger 152. The nose or tip of finger 159 engages an arm 29 on rocker M when knob 150 is turned and brings the parts from the position shown in Fig. 3 to that shown in Fig. 9. l
As the point of contact between finger 152 and finger 159 bears such relation to the pivots 24 and 151 as to be almost on dead center, the keeper 26 is held substantially out of action and the door is locked.
The door can be unlocked by turning knob 150 from the inside or by turning cam H by key F from the outside of the door when pin engages finger 152 lifting it and thus finger 159, thereby releasing catch 156 so that spring 153 acting on the sides of the tail 7 on finger 152 turns it to position of Fig. 3,
and allows the spring 22 to unlock the door.
This spring 153 is held between the pins 154 and 155 and is bent at 156 to form a catch to engage a small projection on the hub which carries the fingers 152 and 159 as shown in Fig. 9. The spring can be dispensed with, if desired, as shown in Fig. 10.
As shown in Fig. 10,'by changing the shape of arm 29 as shown at 429 and by changing the shape of finger 159 as shown at 459 so that the latter presents a flat surface at 458 to arm 429, the force tending to move arm 429 in the direction of the arrow acts on a dead center towards pivot 151 and the parts are held in that position with no spring and with no brake.
Other means may be used to lock the door from the inside by holding the bolts, or such means may be omitted altogether.
For convenience in some of the claims, I will call the front that side of the look from which the barrel projects, and the side where the knob 150 projects, the back.
