The lock comprising the subject matter of this invention is represented as being mounted in the door of a safe 20, and as seen of one of the vin the front views of the safe, includes a combination lock 2l, key lock 22, and op`erating handle 23.
The combination lock 20 includes the knob i 24, dial ring 25, tumblers 26 and. 27, change wheel 28 and driver 2 9, as best shown in `Figures* 2 and 3. ,The permutation members also have a. tumbler 30, shown in the detail 4views in Figure pgthis tumbler has a projection 3l for operating a plunger as will hereinafter appear. l The'tumbler members rv26, 2T and 28, are provided with slots such aslk32 inthe change wheel 28 and tumbler 26 (see Figure 18), whicm when the tumblers have been yturned to the correct combination so that the slotsllne up 1n the re yquired manner willy receive a projection 33 ofi the bolt men'iber so that the bolt may lie retracted for opening the safe.

' Before the bolt plate can be moved'for'retracting the bolts 36 it is Atirst necessary to ytorce the /pins`45`a`nd 46 back into the lugsy "and out o'r` the apertures 47 and 48 so as yto allow' it to slide freely. Lock 22 includesthe drum Ifor receiving key 58 an'dspring-pressed tumblers 55, andback plate 56 which are of the usual construction.' The back plate 5G has an ex-rr tension 57 having a pin and slot connect-ion 5S with the bolt plate 34; the slot is arranged so as to extend cross-wise of the bolt plate so that there may be play in the connection of the pin and slot lengthwise of the slot but not in the direction et' the reciprocation oie the bolt plate. rllhus when the proper key 53 for releasing tumblers 55 is inserted the reciprocation ot boltfplate may be effected by means of the operating handle 28, and when the key is withdrawn the tumblers 55 will lock the drum from turning thereby preventing the reciprocation of the bolt plate. There are also a pair of projecting lugs on the back plate which carry a pivoted lever 6() having a spring 6l connected at 62 and with the base extension 63 which carries the lock tumblers and forms a bearing tor the drum. This spring 6l holds the end 62 oi' the lever normally against vthe back plate. However when key 53 is properly positioned in the drum 54, its end 53 will turn the lever on its pivot against the tension of spring 6l and the end 64 of this lever will cooperate with the projection 65 of a lever 66 for forcing pin 45 down so as to disengage aperture 47 in the plate. lt will be noted that lever 60 is maintained in its releasingposition, bearing on lever 66, in any position of the bolt plate 34, and that ai'ter the pin 45 has been disengaged 'from the aperture, and the plate has been moved the end oi' the pin is maintained in its depressed position by its sliding' engagement with the plate 23, and is kheld there independent of the lock and key. Lever 66 is pivoted in lugs 67 extending from the bolt plate, and its end 68 has a set screw 69 for adjusting it and for holding lever 66 so as to keep pin 45 out of the aperture 47 in the plate when desired.
Pin 46 is moved out of its aperture 48 in the vsliding plate in a similar manner by a projection 70 on a lever 70 (see Figure 12), pivoted in lugs 71 extending from the bolt plate; this lever has a set screw 72 which operates in the same manner as set screw 69. A bracket 73 (Figure 8) is secured to the base plate 38 and carries a lever 74 (Figure 9) pivoted thereto at 74 and va plunger 75 (Figure ll). rlhe lever 74 has an arm 76 which is yengaged by the end 77 of plunger 75 and la projection 78 on yits other arm tor engaging lever 70. A guide member 79 ('Figure l0) is also secured to the base plate along the side of the bracket 73 and its biturcated end 8O is adapted to receive a portion of the head 8l of the plunger 75. The various elements are shown assembled in the elevation, Figure 2, and it will be seen that when theprojection 31 onthe tumbler 30 engages the head 81 of the plunger, the various levers will be acted upon and move the pin 46 so as to disengage the bolt plate 34.
A protecting cover 82, as shown in Figures l, la and 14, is preferably positioned at the end' of the drum 54 for closing the key lock. This cover comprises a base member 83 which is secured to the door oi the safe in a position-surrounding the exterior iange S5 ot the drum 54, and a plate 66 pivoted thereto and having a spring 87 for closing it when the key is withdrawn.
In operation7 tumbler 30 is turned so that the projection 3l will release the pin 46 from the bolt plate and the tumblers 26, 27 and change wheel. are set to the proper combination iii the usual manner in order to aline the slots 32 for receiving the projection on the bolt plate. ritter key 53 is inserted so as to release the pin 45, the bolt 36 may then be retracted by turning the operating handle 23, or by means of the spring 34. lt will be seen that in the operation of the tumblers that the tumbler 30 is the lirst to be positioned, then tumblers 26 and 27 and the change-wheel 28 in order; thus it would be impossible to use the tapered projection 33 as the tumblers.
Ubviously7 either pin 45 or 46 and the respective operating mechanism may be omitted as in some constructions the key lock 22 may prove objectionable, therefore the pin 46 and permutation members alone may be employed. Likewise, any number of such pin locks maybe used in the lock, with key locks or permutation tumbler-s for operating them. ln case the combination lock for releasing the sliding bolt members is blown ofi', the bolts 36 still cannot be retracted since the releasing plunger 75 is forced out by its spring 88 without releasing the pin 46. n
Many other advantages of the herein described invention will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the art to which it appertains.
Having thus set forth the invention, it is not desired to have it conned closely to the specific disclosures in the drawings, it being understood that changes rmay be made in form, proportion and organization of its various parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as indicated by the following claims.
