Application filed May "25,1922. Serial no. seaesvflp To all (t /i0? t imzg comm-91.. q
it known that I, VILLIAM EPARENT, a ci an oi the United States, residing in lhilmlelphia .l ennsylvania, have invented certain improvements in Locks. of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide cially adapted for use on cup boardsand lockers, the combination which can be changed without lQIllOVlllg the lock itfrom thedoor to which it'is attached.
In. many instances. the key of a locker is lost and it is desirable to change the combination without renioving'the lock from the door. This is accomplished in my invention by iserting a special key in an opening at the hack of the l ck and moving an element, which will change the combination so that it can only be operated hy the'inserti'on of a particular key. v
in the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a view of a lock made in cordance with my invention with the cap plate ren'ioved; v
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the'line 22,
Fig. l
Fin. 8 is a view showing a portion'of the look with some of the parts removed;
Fi t is a rear view of the lock casing; is a perspective view of the bolt; 7 x is a detached perspective view of the shifter;
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the pawl which engages "the shifter;
l ig. 8 is a perspective view of the stump;
Fig. 9 is a perspective view ot a tumbler carried by the bolt;
Fi 10 is a perspective view of one of the series of tumblers mounted "on the using; 7
Fig. ll is'av perspective view of post;
Fig. 12 is a perspective view or" a key;
Fig. 13 is a L kov and Fig. 14 is a view of a modification. Referring to the drawings, 1 is the easing of the lock having extensions 2 by which it secured to the cupboard, or locker. 3 isthe cap plate. which is secured to the easing by screw bolts 4. 5 is a cylindrical extension on the can plate in which the key post 6 is located. This key post has a slotted head 7, which fits back of a flange on the the key moved so that its slot will be brou h line. w ha stump 18011 a sliding plate 19 V The key must be so out that when perspective view/of the stump 'es the bolt 9. On the the key post, the arm the casing as in Fig. ient this arm oi the bolt; ant- On the bolt 9v is a stump andpivoted' to a post 14- on the casing; is a series of tumblers 13, which are slotted so that, when the key moves these tumblers 1E1 ordertnat their slots will be in line with the stump the bolt can be r 'a ted.
'livoted to the post 15 on the bolt 9 is'a tumbler 16, formed as shown in 9,;11141 Living slot '17. his tumbler can Fig. 8. the key post is turned. the slots in the tumblers 13 and the slot in the tumbler 1G anil'has. at the olji 'iositexend, an
2 10 of the bolt, proare brought in line with their respective stumps, after which the bolt can be withdrawn by the arm 8 of the key post striking the portion 11 of the bolt.
Mounted in the casing lis a key'post 2O towhich is secured a shifter 21, Fig. 6. On
the shifter is an arm 22 having a pin 23, which enters a slot 24-forn'ied by two pro jections extending from the stump plate 19 so that, when the key post 20 is turned by the setting key, F ig. 18, the plate 19 and its stump 8, can be raised and lowered in order to alter its position in respect. to the bolt and its tumbler 16.
The shifter 21 has a segmentalextension 84 having teeth 25, which are engaged by a pawl 26, Fig. 7, pivoted to a post 27 on the casing. This pawl is so formed that it 'will allow the shifter to be moved, but will hold the shifter in any position in which it is adjusted. r
The stump, 1n the present instance, is
held by a'sprmg 28 against the wall of the lock casing, the sprmg being mounted on a post 29 and the end of the spring entendthe casing exlends through this slot. The
stump plate has a spring 28. On the easing is a fixed rack 32 having beveled teeth engaged by a tooth 31 on the stump plate. :10" i'; a key post having a toothed arm 36 "which is arranged to enter one oil a series of notches 35 in the plate 19.
By this construction, the main hey is inserted in the lock and the bolt tumbler 16 is operated and brought into alignment with the stump 18 and the bolt retracted so that the stump 18 Will enter the slot 17 in the tumbler. Then the post is turned by its special key so as to Withdraw the toothed arm. This leaves the plate 19 free to slide.
lly inserting another hey in the loch, while the bolt is Withdrawn, the tumbler 16 moves the plate l9 through its stump to a non position. The key post 20- is moved so that its arm 36 will again engage the plate and lock it in its new position.
I claim:
1. The con'ibination in a lock, 01"? a casing; a key post at the face of the lock; a bolt; means for engaging the belt; a slotted tumbler pivoted to the bolt; a sliding stump mounted in the casing and arranged to be moved into alignment with the slot in the tumbler; a pawl for locking the stump in the position in which it is adjusted; and a key post at the back of the 1001-: to receive a key for actuating the stump mechanism.
The combination in a lock, of a casin a bolt mounted in the casing; a tumbler pivotally mounted on the bolt and having a slot; a plate slidably mounted on the casing and having a stump arranged to enter'the slot in the tumbler when the bolt is retracted; a spring engaging the plate; a pivoted shifter mounted on the casing and having a rey post; an arm on the shi'lter pivotally connected to the stump pla e; a segmental extension on the shifter having a series of teeth; a pawl pivotally mounted on the cas ing and arranged to engage the teeth of the shifter; a stump on the bolt; a series ol tumblers pivoted to the casing and slotted for the reception of the stump; and a key post arranged to receive a key so that, on turning the key, the several tumbles Will align with their stumps and the bolt will be retracted;
8. The combination in a lock, of a casing; a bolt mounted in the tasin slotted tumbler pivotally mounted on the bolt; a plate having a stump projecting therefrom; a shifter pivotally mounted on the casing; a key post at the center of the shifter by which the shifter is adjusted, said shifter having an arm engaging the stump plate; and ratchet mechanism for locking the shifter in the position in which it is adjusted.
