To all 107mm it may concern Be it known that I, ALFRED Lncnnnc, a. citizen of the French Republic, and resident of Paris, France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cylindrical Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a lock the members or parts of which only occupy a mini-' mum of space while being possessed of a maximum of strength. The lock can be used for any thickness of door without impairing the strength of the wood and where there is not much space available and without interfering with the decoration.
In the accompanying drawing is shown one form of embodiment of the invention and in this drawing:

The lock comprises hollow handle pieces 1 the shape of which may be of any desired form; they are provided with'lids or covers 2 which are connected thereto by means of hinges 3 situated at the upper part 4 of the handle or knob. These handle pieces are adapted to rotate inside a sleeve 5 which is screw threaded at both ends and forms the lock casing. The latter is provided with cross notches 6 situated in the middle of its length as a passage for the lock bolt 7. Four screw threaded holes are pierced in the casing 5 and are intended to receive the' screws 9 of the bridges 10fformed each by a bar positioned above the notches so. as to allow the passage of the locking bolt. These bridges have for their object to guide the lock bolt and to connect between themselves the sides of the notch of the tube allowing of the passage of the lock bolt and to hold the look after it has once been put in posi-' tion. The screws 9 which serve to secure the bridges and the ends of which project inside the casing, serve as lateral guides for a cylindrical part or member 11 which will be termed the tube of the look. Rosettes 12 are screwed upon the threaded ends of the lock casing and are adapted to clamp against either side of the door to hold the casing securely in place. These rosettes may be ornamented if desired, and one rosette may be ornamented diiferently from the other. Thanks to this means of tightening a great distance is obtained which allows of the thickness of the lock being re-- of the shoulders of the lock tube. 11 and se-.

The lock tube 11 extends from one side to the other of the lock casing. It is n'otched'in its center 14: so as to let pass the lock bolt; the remaining section serves to carry the lock bolt along when the handle pieces are rotated, the latter being secured to the tube 11 by means of screws 15. On each side of the notch 14, the tube forms two shoulders 16 which serve to laterally adjust the tube in the body of the lock by means of screws 9. The tube after having been thus adjusted, cannot be removed from either side while the lock bolt is free to move easily. On one side of the tube and at the lower part thereof two small holes have been pierced to receive two pins 17 adapted to serve as a safety stop.
Inside the tube 11 there is the lantern 18 which is formed of a cylindrical piece having cut into it parallelly to its shaft a groove 19 adapted to receive safety slide members at 21 to receive the spring 22'which holds the safety slide-member in a closed position. On the other side of the member 19 is an annular groove 23 adapted to .let pass the safety pins 17. In the center of the member 19 three teeth have been provided at right anglesto 'eachother so that when the sliding members are engaged into their groove, they form a gearing pinion having four teeth; the upper and the rear teeth 24- and 25 are provided with a notch 26 in their center so as to let pass the first tooth of the lock bolt when the latter is sliding. The lantern is extended by a small cylinder 27 having a longitudinal groove therein adapted to receive the key which pushes the sliding members 20. The latter are formed holes are formed by a small slotted tube 31 secured to the lock tube by means of a pin. The lock bolt is formed of two branches 32 passing parallelly and tangentially through the lock casing whereby it is well guided.
Cut in the upper branch there are six teeth the first one 3% of which is thinner and longer than the five others thus for1ning a shoulder on either side, these shoulders stop the lock bolt on the upper tooth of the lantern and prevent it from moving farther when the lock bolt springs throw it back into the closed position. The other five teeth serve to carry the lock bolt on for the locking by means of the key. A closing spring 35 is positioned in the hole 36 provided in the solid part which forms the tip of the lock bolt. I
The lock bolt can have any desired length according to whether the lock is positioned at a greater or less distance from the edge of the door. The key is adjusted on the sliding members from the side and on the bit in accordance with guides provided in the lock tube.
It will be readily seen that the lock bolt is actuated by a partial rotation of the knobs for day use while a Whole rotation of the key shifts the lockbolt so as to lock the door for night use.
Having now fully described my said invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a lock of the kind described the combination with a lock casing, of a lock tube, a spring controlled lock bolt having two rear branches, a toothed rack onthe inside of one of said branches, a rotating tumbler provided with a lantern gear, means for holding the lantern gear against rotation, said lantern gear being adapted to actuate the said toothed rack, one of the teeth of said lantern gear being formed of slid ing members adapted to be adjusted by the key of the lock to release the lantern gear holding means and to permit the lock bolt to be actuated.
2. In a lock of the kind described the combination with the lock casing, of a lock tube adapted to be partially rotated in said cas ing, a lock bolt guided on said lock tube, a
rotating tumbler provided with a lantern gear adapted to be rotated in said lock tube by means of a key, a groove cut into said rotating tumbler parallel to the aXis of said rotating tumbler, sliding members adapted to be engaged in said groove, a circular groove in said lantern, locking pins adapted to engage the said circular groove, a second circular groove provided in said tumbler, a spring adapted to engage the said second circular groove, three gear teeth provided on said Gopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner lantern and adapted to actuate the lock bolt, two of said gear teeth being provided with a central notch.
3. In a lock of the kind described the combination with the lock casing of a lock tube adapted to rotate partially in said lock casing, a lantern adapted to rotate in said lock tube, a longitudinal groove provided in said tumbler and adapted to receive sliding members, a circular groove in the said tumbler, locking pins adapted to engage the said circular grooves, and notches provided in said sliding members and means for shifting the said sliding members to cause the said notches to coincide with the said circular groove.
4. In a lock of the kind described the combination with the lock casing of a lock tube adapted to rotate partially in said lock casing, a sliding bolt provided with rack teeth, a rotating tumbler formed with a lantern gear adapted to rotate in said lock tube and which is engaged by the said rack teeth, a longitudinal groove provided in said tumbler and adapted to receive sliding members, a circular groove in said tumbler, locking pins adapted to engage. the said circular grooves, and notches providedin said sliding members and means for shifting the said sliding members to cause the said notches to coincide with the said circular groove, and a spring adapted to hold the said sliding members in their locking position.
5. The combination with alock casing, of a rotatable sleeve loosely fitting in the casing and which is provided with a key receiving opening at each end, a slidable and rotatable tumbler within the sleeve, a sliding bolt mounted adjacent the SlBGXQ and adapted to oscillate transversely thereto, and means in the tumbler operable by a key in serted at either end of the sleeve for causing engagement between the tumbler and the bolt, whereby upon rotating the key the bolt may be oscillated.
6. The combination with a lock casing, of a rotatable sleeve loosely fitted therein, a knob fixed at each end of the sleeve, a sliding bolt mounted adjacent the intermediate portion of the sleeve, said bolt oscillating transversely of the sleeve, a tumbler within the sleeve, and separable and independent means on the tumbler and sleeve for engag ing the bolt to oscillate the same.
