To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL R. FRAIM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Padlocks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to padlocks in general and more particularly to such a padlock adaptable foruse in locker systems where a small padlock is required and made np'in' a large number of key changes, all operable by a master key.
An object of this invention is to provide a padlock of this character referred to, which will be simple and efficient in its operation, readily disassembled and assembled.
Another object of this invention is to provide a locking mechanism to include a master lever and a plurality of change levers, the latter being interchangeable or adapted to have substitutions made therefor either in part or entirely to beoperable independently of the master lever, by various keys, the master lever being at all times operable by a master key independently of the change levers.
iVith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and more particularly set forth in the appended claims, certain embodiments of my invention being illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which: 7

The locking mechanism consists mainly in a locking bolt 11 with its actuating levers which Wlll' be described later. Referrlng to Figure 5 the locking bolt 11 being pivotally mounted on the casing studhas a recess 12 in its lower side, in which recess a plunger 13 extends through the hole 14 in the bolt. The bolt' also hasa notch 15 adapted to engage the notch 16 in the toe of the shackle 17, while a lug 18 isarranged onthe opposite side of the bolt. v
A bolt lever- 19 with an elliptical inclined slot 20 is mounted on the stud 9 so that the lever may slide on the stud. The lever 19 is provided at its other end with a hole to receive the plunger 13 of the bolt 11 while the lever is fitted in the recess 12in such a manner that a sliding'movement of the lever rotates thejbolt about its pivot a bearing surface whereby a'keymay effect the movement referred to above."
Placed upon the bolt lever l9 is a master lever 22 pivotally mounted on the casing stud 8 by'means of the hole 26, an elliptical slot 23 being arranged in the master lever to receive the casing stud 9 which limits a pivotal movement of the lever 22. The master leveris also provided with anupturned flange 24,,the purpose of which wi-l appear later in the description. Five change levers 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 are provided, having ellipticalslots 31, 36, 41, 46 and 51; holes 32, 37 42,47 and 52; notches 34,39, 44, 49 and 54; projections 35, 4 0, 45, and'55; and leaf springs 33, 38,43, 48 and 53 respectively. The notches and projections in each change lever have a difierent location so that the wards 65, 66, 67, 68 and 69 of the key will actuate their corresponding change lever'in such a manner as to bring the notches 34, 39, 44, 49 and 54 flush and be engaged siinultaneonslyby the bolt lug 18. The plate 58 is placed over the uppermost change lever 5 simply as a filler plate. How'- ever, it may readily be used in connection, with other master key change combinations by locating it in different positions interposed between any selected two of the change levers. In this case the key bearing surface on the plate would extend to a certain radius whereby the ward on the key bitting would just pass through.

This simplicity and eificiency of thisconstruction is apparent, in that the regularkey operates the change levers alone, the master lever not being used :at all; while the master key operatesthe lock throughthe medium. of the master lever alone and does not engage the change levers directly, the master lever bemgrehed on .to raise the same.
It wil'l be understood that'while I have described .and illustrated certain combinations and arrangements of parts, I do not wish to limit my invention to such specific disclosures, but only in so far as tofall within thescope of the appended claims.

A padlock, comprising a casing and a shackle pivotally mounted therein, a locking bolt pivotally mounted in said casing and adapted to engage said shackle, a sliding bolt lever for moving said bolt into and out of locking position, a master lever, flange, a plu' provided with an upstanding rahty of change levers spring-pressed tonormally prevent retraction of said locking bolt, said master and change levers being mounted on a common axis, said change levers being provided with selectively located notches to register with a corresponding dog on said bolt to allow the retraction of the latter, all of said change levers being projections directly beneath their notches, said change lever being operable independently of said master lever, and said master lever being operable alone toactuate all of said change levers by means of the flange of the latter engaging the projections of the former. r

A padlock comprising, in combination, a casing a shackle pivotally mounted therein, a sliding bolt lever, a locking bolt also pivotally mounted in said casing and adapted to be actuated by said bolt lever to engage and disengage said shackle, a master lever, and a plurality of change levers mounted on a common axis and adapted to regulate the movement of said locking bolt, said change levers being operable independently of said master lever, the latter being operable alone to actuate all of said change lever said bolt lever having an inclined slot whereby it is slidably mounted on a stud of said casing, said bolt lever being connected to said bolt and having a bearing surface adapted to be engaged by suitable change and master keys for retracting said bolt from said shackle when the change levers are in the proper position to allow such movement of the bolt.

A padlock, comprising a casing and a shackle pivotally mounted therein, a looking bolt for engaging said shackle, a sliding bolt lever for moving said bolt into and out of locking position, a master lever and a plurality oi" change'levers mounted on a common axis, said change levers being spring pressed to normally prevent retraction of said locking bolt, said change levers being provided with selectively located notches to register with a corresponding dog on said bolt to allow the retraction of the latter, said change levers being operable independently of said master lever, and said master lever being operable alone to actuate all of said change levers, said bolt lever having an inclined slot whereby it is slidably mounted on a stud of said casing, said bolt lever be ing connected to said bolt and having a bearing surface adapted to be engaged by suitable change and master keys for retracting said bolt from said shackle when the change levers are in the proper position to allow such movement of the bolt.

A padlock, comprising a casing and a shackle pivotally mounted therein, a locking bolt pivotally mounted in said casing and adapted to engage said shackle, a sliding bolt lever for moving said bolt into and out of locking position, a master lever provided with an upstandingflange, a plurality of change levers spring-pressed to normally prevent retraction of said locking bolt, said master and change levers being mountedon a common axis, said change levers being provided with selectively located notches to register with a corresponding dog on said bolt to allow the retraction of the latter, all of said change levers being projections directly beneath their notches, said change lever being operable independently of said master lever, and said master lever being Op 1 erable alone to actuate all of said change levers by means of the flange of the latter engaging the projections of the former, said bolt lever having an inclined slot whereby it is slidably mounted on a stud of said casing, said bolt lever being connected to said bolt and having a bearing surface adapted to be engaged by suitable change and master keys for retracting said bolt from said shackle when the change levers are in the proper position to allow such movement of the bolt. 7.
