' COMBINATION-LOCK.
Application filed December 9, 1920. Serial To all whom it may concern;
c it known that I, MICHAL G212, a citizen of Poland, residing at Toledo, county of Lucas, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
his invention relates to improvements in combination locks, being more particularly intended for use on doors of small safes or vaults in private houses or buildings generally.
The invention has for an object to provide a novel and simple form of combination lock which is cheap to manufacture and which be conveniently attached to any safe or vault door.
For further comprehension of'the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, referencewill be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claim-in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the drawings- Figure 1 is a front view of a combination lock constructed according to the present invention. 7
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same, partly in section taken along line 2-2 of Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the knob spindle after removal of the tumbler disks.
Fig. 4 isa rear elevation of the lock after removal of the casing shown in section along line 44 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a rear view of the look after the removal of the tumbler disks. I
ig. 6 is a detail view of a slotted plate for changing the combination.
As here shown my improved combination lock comprises a front plate 10 set into the front wall of a safe or vaultdoor, flush with in any This plate 10 has a mark 11 on its face and a central opening through which extends a spindle 12 carry ng at its extreme outerfront end a. knob. 13, and behind the same, adapted to rotate with said knob, a collar plate 14 carryingthe combina tion characters 15. g
The spindle 12 extends into a casing 16 secured to the inner wall of the safe orvault door, where it carries a sleeve or socket 17 provided with a shoulder 18 and longitudinal grooves 19 on'its outer face. This socket suitable manner.
Specification of Letters Patent.
spindle, and this disk Patented Sept. 27, 1921. N 0. 429,434.
is surrounded by a disk or spaced from the front plate of the casing y means of a plurality of clamps 21 gripping with their inner, hook-shaped ends 22 into suitable arcuate slots 23 of the plate 20. This plate is also provided with an arcuate, nearly radial slot 24in which is guided a screw or pin 25 connecting the forked ends 26, 27of a locking bolt 28 gripping over the plate at opposite sides thereof, the pin being adapted to travel in the slot 24, when the plate is rotated, while the hookends of the clamp 21 travel in the arcuate slots 23. The bolt 28 is guided through a suitable guide 28'. The plate 20 has also a peripheral extension or ear 29 to which is pivotally secured by a screw 30 or the like, the lower end of a finger 31 having the tendency to snap with its tumbler disk enround plate 20 gaging lug 32 into recesses in said tumbler ,per face a dial representing the combination numerals 1 to 22 inclusive, each numeral beside a perforation. A washer on spindle 12 separates this disk from the next following, 34, resting on a shoulder 36 of the 34 has no holes nor numbers; however, it has on each of its faces a small stud 37, 38, the lower one 37, adapted to engage a stud 37 on the disk 33. A washer 39 separates the disk 34 from the next following one,the upper disk 35, which has a marginal circle of perforations 40 adapted to be engaged by the stud 35', and in juxtaposition to these perforations the disk 35 bears on its upper face the combination numbers 1 to 22 inclusive, the same as disk 33. At its inner end the spindle 12 has a central bore 41 for the reception of a screw 42, the head of which presses with its lower flange against a washer 43 resting upon the upper face of a pear-shaped plate 44 provided at its upper ing 45 for the passage of the shank of the screw 42 into the outer end of the spindle 12. At its opposite endthe plate 44 has a perforation 46, through which a screw 47 passes into one of the perforations of the upper disk 35 for a purpose later to be more fully described. Each of the disks 33, 34 and 35 has a peripheral recess 48 for engagement by the lug 32 of the operating finger 31.
end with an open- The end of the operating finger 31 opposite to its pivot point is formed into a finger 49 having an engaging face 50 at its free end for engaging the forked lock bolt 28.
The device operates as follows The knob 13 is turned to the left until the combination character f on the plate la is opposite to the mark 11 on plate 10, in which position the recess of the bottom disk 33 will be in alinement with the lug 32 of finger 31.
hen now the knob is given one complete revolution toward the right, the stud 35 on the lower face of the top plate or disk 35 will engage the stud 38 of the disk 84: and take this plate along until the recess of said plate and disk will be in alinement with the lug 32 of the finger 31 under the pressure of its spring on its pivot point, at which time the combination character 20 will be opposite the mark 11.
hen now the knob is turned to the left until the reference character 47 is opposite the mark 11, the recess of plates 34 and 35 will be in position for engagement by the lug 32 of finger 31, and any further rota tion of the knob will take along the plate 20 as the same is now coupled by finger 31 with the disks and will operate the latch 28 to unlocking or locking position according to the direction of rotation of the knob within a certain limit.
The rotation of the plate 20 is limited by the engagement of the pin 25 in slot 24, and
if said pin comes the end of its path within said slot, the actuation of the latch 28 in either direction will be stopped, and a further rotation of the knob will bringthe lug 32 again out of engagement with the recesses of the disks and in order to operate the lock, it will be necessary to again turn the knob according to the combination given above.
A change of the combination can easily be effected by changing the relative positions of the number disks.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of theUnited States is,
In a lock of the character described, a casing, an operating spindle extending into said casing, a plate on said spindle spaced from the inner face of the front wall of said casing, said plate havin a plurality of arouate slots near its perip cry, a plurality of hooked clamps allowing a rotation of said plate within certain limits and securing the a same to the casing, a locking bolt, aguide 1n the front wall of said casing for guidiiig said bolt, a forked rear end on said bolt straddling said plate, a pin connecting the prongs of said rear end, an arcuate, nearly radial slot in said plate in which said .pin travels, an operating finger pivotally secured at one of its ends to said ear, a plurality of recessed tumbler disks on said spindle, a lug on the upper end of said finger normally engaging the recesses in said disks, a finger at the other end of said operating finger opposite to itspivot point, an engaging face at the free end of said last named finger for engaging said forked lock bolt to press the same into locking position upon the proper operation of said spindle and to unlock the lock upon the operation of said plate.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature.
MICHAL GZYZ.
