To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, VIGILIO MATTIVI, a subject of the Emperor' of Austria-Hungary, residing at Cedarhurst, in the county of Las Animas and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Permutation-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to permutation locks having a rotating tumbler, and its object is to provide a lock of this kind embodying certain novel features of construction to be hereinafter described and claimed.
Itis also the object of the invention to provide a lock of the kind stated which will be extremely diilicult, if not impossible, to open except by some one perfectly familiar' with its operation.
In order that the invention may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which drawings- Figure 1 is a face view of the outside, and Fig. 2 a similar view of the inside of the lock; Figs. 3 and 4 are plan diagrammatic views of the bolt and tumblers, in different positions; Fig. 5 is a vertical section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2; Fig. 6 is an elevation of the key; Fig. 7 is an elevation showing a modified form of key; and Fig. 8 is a section on the line 8-8 of Fig. 2.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 10 denotes a base plate which carries the several parts constituting the lock. The front end of the plate has an outstanding flange 11 provided with an opening 12 through which the bolt 13 passes when it is shot forward into locking position. The bolt is a sliding one, and has two oblong openings 14 in which operate two rotating tumblers 15. The tumblers have notches 16 and at one end of the bolt openings are tongues 17 which are designed to enter the tumbler notches when the latter are in alinement with said tongues. With the tongues and notches in this position, the bolt may be retracted, whereas when the tumblers are turned so as to bring the notches out of line with the tongues, as shown in Fig. 4, the
bolt is locked against opening movement.
To the inner face of the plate 10 is fastened a plate 18 carrying pivot studs 19 on which are rotatably mounted ratchet wheels 20, which latter are for a purpose to be presently described. Spring-pressed, pivoted pawls 21 carried by the plate 18 engage the teeth of the ratchet wheels 2O and prevent the same from being rot-ated backward. The ratchet wheels 20 carry the tumblers 15, they being secured together by rivets 21, which latter also secure ratchet wheels 24 to the tumblers, there being a plate 24 interposed between the tumblers and said ratchet wheels. The rivets pass through the ratchet wheels 20, the tumblers 15, the plates 24IL and the ratchet wheels 24, and thus rigidly connect said parts. At the center of the ratchet wheels 24 are pivot studs 23 on which are rotatably mounted dials 22. The ratchet wheels 24 are engageable by spring-pressed, pivoted pawls 25 carried by the dials, whereby said dials are coupled to the tumblers to rotate therewith, but are free to be rotated relatively to the tumblers in one direction. The plate 18 carries a guide 26 for the rear end of the bolt 13. v
To the inner face of the plate 10 is secured a plate 27 having inturned flanges 28 at its upper and lower ends whereby it is spaced from the bolt and the parts associated` therewith, and across which it eX- tends vertically. The flanges 28 terminate in lateral bends 29 having perforations to receive suitable fastening means 30 whereby the plate 27 is secured to the plate 10.
Extending between the plates 10 and 27 and mounted for rotary movement therein is a key-cylinder 31. The outer end of the key-cylinder has a shoulder 32 which is in contact with the outer face of the plate 10, and the inner end of the key-cylinder projects through a hole in the plate 27 and carries a transverse key 33 to prevent its withdrawal.v The plate 10 has a circular opening in which the key-cylinder seats and from this opening extends a slot 34.
The key for operating the lock is shown in Fig. 6.' It comprises a bow 35 from which extend two parallel and spaced stems 36 and 37, respectively. The stem 36 has a bit 38, and the stem 37, a bit 39. The key-cylinder has diametrically opposite grooves 40 to receive the respective stems. The bit 38 is designed to operate the tumbler-s, and the bit 39 operates the bolt, the latter' having notches 41 in its top edge which are adapted to be entered by said bit.
The dials 22 have a circular series of indicating marks 42, the same being graduations which are numbered, and the plate 27 is so located that its opposite edges serve as indices for the respective dials. To the under side of the plate 27 is pivoted a stop device for the dials, said device comprising a substantially sector-shaped plate 43 which is pivoted to the plate 27 as indicated at 44. The plate 27 has two indentations 45 and 46 located, respectively, on opposite sides of its vertical center line, and in the center line of the plate 43 is a lug 47 adapted to enter either one of said indentations according to whether said plate is swung to the right or to the left, so as to lock the plate in the position to which it is swung. The plate 43 also has two lugs 48 and 49, located, respectively, on opposite sides of its vertical center line. The lug 48 is in the path of a lug 50 on one of the dials when the plate 43 is swung over to that side of the dial, and the lug 49 is in the path of a lug 51 on the other dial when said plate is swung over to that dial. In its central position, the lugs on the plate 43 are out of the path of the lugs on the dials. In
the edge of the plate 43 farthest from its pivot 44 are notches 52 which are adapted to be engaged by the bit 39 for the purpose of swinging the plate to the right or left, or`
for placing it in central position so that the lugs and 5l may clear the lugs 48 and 49.
The function of the dials 22 is to indicate how many steps the tumblers 15 must be rotated to place the same in unlocking position. When the tumblers are in this position, a note is made of the numbers to which the edges of the plate 27 point. These numbers indicate the number of steps between the position of the tumblers when the lugs 48 and 49 engage the lugs 50 and 51, and their positions when in unlocking position. Inasmuch as t-he dials may be rotated relatively to and independently of the tum blers, the combination can be readily changed which is done by changing the relation of the dials to the tumblers. I-Iowever, before changing the combination, the plate 43 must be swung to center position so as to take the lugs thereon out of the path of the lugs on the dial.
Assuming the door is locked and it is desired to unlock the same, the key is inserted into the key-cylinder, and the plate 43 is swung to the right or the left so as to bring one of its lugs into t-he path of the lug on the dial toward which the plate was swung. The plate is operated as stated by inserting the bit 39 into one of the notches 52 and then turning the key until the lug 47 snaps into one of the indentations 45 or 46. The key is now manipulated so as `to bring the bit 38 into engagement with the ratchet wheel 20, and the latter is rotated by turning the key back and forth to engage one tooth of the ratchet wheel after the other and thus imparting a step-bystep rot-ary movement to the ratchet wheel and the tumbler. This is continued until the lug'on the dial strikes the lug on the plate 43. The key is now manipulated to swing the plate over to the other side to take its lug out of the path of the lug on the dial, and to place' its other lug into the path of the lug on the other dial. The ratchet wheel 20 is now again operated by the key and turned the number of steps which were noted on the dial, whereupon the tumbler comes to the position shown in Fig. 3. The other tumbler is now operated in the same manner as the first one, and when it also comes into un locking position, the bolt is retracted by engaging the bit 39 with one of the notches 41, and turning the key in the ordinary manner. The bolt is also advanced into locking posit-ion by means of the bit 39, after which the ratchet wheels are rotated one or more steps to place the tumblers in locking position as shown in Fig. 4. rlhe bits 38 and 39 are so positioned that the latter clears the bolt when the former is operating the ratchet wheels, and after the tumblers have been set in unlocking position, the key is withdrawn slightly to bring the bit 39 into the notch 41. In this position the bit 38 is on the outside of the plate, it passing out through the slot 34. To insert the' key, the key-cylinder 3l is turned until one of its grooves 40 is in alinement with the slot 34. The stem carrying the bit 39 is then inserted into the groove, and the key is pushed forwardly until said bit clears the plate l0, the bit 38 remaining outside. The key is now turned until the bit 38 is in alinement with the slot 40, after which the key may be farther inserted and positioned to operate the parts as already described.
The preferred embodiment of the invention has been shown, but it will be evident that any changes in the structural details may be resorted to without a departure from the scope of the invention. The lock may be provided with two bolts, each having two tumblers as herein described. Fig. 7 shows a key having one of its bits provided with notches 53 adapted to coperate with corresponding wards in the key-cylinder.
I claim:
l. A lock comprising a bolt, a rotary tumbler coperating with the bolt, a tumbler actuating member, a key having a bit for actuating the bolt and a bit for imparting a step-by-step movement to said member to actuate the tumbler, and means for determining the number of steps the actuating member is from the position it has when it places the tumbler in release position.
2. A lock comprising a bolt, a rotary tumbler coperating with the bolt, a ratchet wheel carried by the tumbler, a key having a bit for actuating the bolt and a bit for actuating the ratchet wheel to impart a step-by-step rotary movement to the tumbler, and means for determining the number of steps the tumbler is from release position.
3. A lock comprising a bolt, a rotary tumbler coperating with the bolt, a ratchet wheel carried by the tumbler, an adjustable dial carried by the tumbler' and having a stop, an index coperating with the dial, a swinging member having a lug adapted to be moved into and out of the path of t-he stop, and means for actuating the ratchet wheel to impart a step-by-step rotary movement to the tumbler.
4. A lock comprising a bolt, a rotary tumbler coperating with the bolt, a ratchet wheel carried by the tumbler, an adjustable dial carried by the tumbler and havin" a stop, an index coperatng with the dial, a swinging member having a lug adapted to be moved into and out of the path of the stop, and a key having a bit to actuate the bolt and the swinging member, and a bit to actuate the ratchet wheel to impart a stepby-step rotary movement to the tumbler.
