SHAVING-STICK HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
"Patented Apr. 27, 1920.
Application `filed March 31, 1919. Serial No.286,358.
To all 'ze/tom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY J. PURPLE, a citizen ci' the United States, and resident of Newton, county or Middlesex, State of ivlassachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Shaving-Stick Holders, of whichv the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specilication, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
his invention relates tothe holders used with shaving sticks and like articles. While I have specifically mentioned a shaving stick, the invention is applicable to other articles which are handled or used in a similar way, that is to say, by a rubbing action which results in a gradual wearing away of the material applied. The shaving stick, however, is perhaps the most generally known article of this class and as l anticipate a major field oit usefulness for my device in its application to shaving sticks, l shall in the following specification and claims refer more particularly to a shaving stick, usingthat word in an exemplary sense embracing other articles of the same general type in construction and use.
My invention will best be vunderstood by reference to the following description taken in connection with the accompanying draw ings wherein Figure 1 is a side view .of .the complete container Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectionftherethrough showing the stick in elevation;
after the cover or cap of the container is lifted and shows the stick and its hand grip in position for use; and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged section on the line i-4 of F ig. 3 and with parts shown in any other position in dotted lines.
Referring to the drawings, I there show a construction of that type wherein the shaving stickis mounted in a grip which also serves as a base .for the container and Vwith which coperates a cover inclosing the major portion of the stick when it is not in use. My improvements more particularlyv apply to the construction of the grip which forms the base of the container.
This grip, which is secured to the base portion ofthe stick of soap 5, is preferably formed as indicated in Fig. 2 from a metal 3 is a view of the stick as it appears stamping providing a Vbase plate 7 conven iently formed with a marginal rim or beading 9. Frein one side of the base portion 9 rises a flange 11 Fig. l), providing an abutment against which the base of the stick is placed and adapted to tit the same. When the stick is round, as is usually the case, this flange may conveniently take the form of a semicircle.' [Herein the flange is extended integrally, asV shown in dotted lines inl Fi Li, to provide a bendable band 13 of su 1- cient lengthto complete the circuit of the base of the stick when bent and this band may be provided with a terminal tongue 15 adapted to lit a slot 17 in the corresponding end of the flange 11.
lt will be understood that the part is supplied te the assembler with the movable extension 13 in dotted line position. The operative inserts the shaving stick laterally, pressing it against the abutment iange 11, and then swings over the band 13, fitting it around the base et the stick and causing the latter to press against the abutment, and nally secures the movable section in position (in the present example) by inserting the tongue 15 through the slot 17 and locking it' therein by embedding it in the soap, the parts 11 and 1.3 in cooperation forming a closed ring gripping the end of the stick.
llfhis ring ,will ordinarily, when the stick is cylindrical as 1s customary, form a ring in the more yrestrioted sense of the word, but
` it may foi-in a ring in the broader sense, that `spurs are embedded in the stick. 1
To provide a complete package, a cap or cover Z1-is provided adapted to inclose the vstick 5 and having an open end which may t over the ring provided by the parts 11 and 13 and seat on the beading 9 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The grip described forms a convenient handle for holding the stick in use. After the stick has been used, a new one may readily be inserted by releasing and swinging back the movable portion 13, withdrawing the small butt of stick remaining, and inserting a new stickin its place. The
grip holds the stick lirmly' and :is not loosened by any shrinkage due to drying of the soap that may take place after it has been placed in position. The engagement 'y with the soap is furthermore of such a bodiment of my invention, what I claim as newA and desire to secure by Letters Patent is y l. A shaving stick having a grip attached to one end thereof and comprising a base having an upstanding flange portion eX- tending partly around the same and receiving one side of the stick, said portion being prolonged as a bendable strip which when bent forms in cooperation with said flange portion a ring gripping the end of the stick.
2. A shaving stick having a grip attached to one end thereof and comprising a base having an upstanding flange portion eX- tending partly around the same and receiv-V ing one side of thel stick, said portion being prolonged as a bendable strip which when bent'forms in coperation with said flange portion a ring gripping the end of the stick, said flange portion having a slot and said strip having a tongue entering said slot and embedded in the stick.
3. A shaving stick having a grip attached to one end thereof and comprisingl a base having an upstanding flange portion extending partly around the same and receiving one side of the stick, said portion being prolonged as a bendable strip which when bent forms in cooperation with said flange portion a ring gripping the end of` the stick, said parts having inward projections adapted laterally to enter the body of stricted about the base of the stick by the Y bending of said portion. V Y
Vet. A shaving stick having agrip attached to one end thereof and comprisingvgitfbase having an abutment rising from one side to receive one` side of the stick and an opposed movable portion having an open position permitting the introduction of the stick laterally across said base and against said abutment and a closed position bearingV against the stick and holdingY it against said abutment. Y I
` 5. A shaving stick having a grip attached to oneend thereof and comprising abase having an abutment rising fromone side to' receive one side of the stick, an opposed.
movable portion having an open position:
having an abutment rising from one side tof receive one side of the stick and an opposed movable portion having an open positionA permitting the introduction of the stick lat erally across saidV basey and against said` abutment and a closed position bearing.'
against the stick and holding it againstsaid; abutment, said parts having inwardly directed projections enterin`0` the body ofthe stick. 'Y
7. A shaving stick having a grip attached to one' end thereof and comprising a base having a flange portion to receive one side of the base of the stick, a member swingably mounted and forming in cooperation with said flange portion a ringinclosing the base of the stic I and means for locking said portion in position. i
ln testimony whereof, I have signed my Yname to this specification. f
