UNITED STATES PATENT oFF-ICE.
CHAUNCEY .NIAC MURRAY, OF SUPERIOR, WYOMING.
COMBINATION ARTICLE.
Application nea August 11, 1924. serial No. 731,457.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHAUNCEY` A. MUR- -RAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Superior, in the co-unty of Sweetwater and State of IVyoming, have invented certain new and useful Improvements. in Combination Articles; and I dol declare the following to be a full, clear,- and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others`skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates-to improvements in combination articles including a key-ring, and the principal object of the invention is to provide an exceptionallyl simple and inexpensive device of this class, in which 'a key-ring is pivoted inone end of a channel-shaped sheath and is held normally in a closed position by an arm which is pivoted in said sheath, said arm being provided with a projection extending .through an opening in the bottom of the sheath to be engaged by the users thumb to start said arm toward an open position, so as to release the key-ring and permit the latter to be swung to an open or exposed position.
A further object is to provide a structure in which the pivoted arm above referred to may well constitute a screw-driver and its projection may form a bottle-opener.
Yet another object is to provide a construction including notches in the upper edges of the sheath walls which facilitate gripping of the arm after initial opening thereof, so that said arm may be moved to its fully opened position, said notches bemg also a apted to receive the end of a cigar so that the arm may be forced against the cigar to cut the tip therefrom, a portion of the arm being sharpened for this purpose.
With the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel subject-matter hereinafter described and claimed, the description being supplemented by the accompanying drawing. Figure 1 is vertical. longitudinal sectional view through a device constructed in accordance with my invention. showing the key-ring locked in its closed position;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the ring and the pivoted arm swung to open position;
Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on line 3--3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is al perspective view of the sheath;l
perspective view of Athe keyitselfto provide a pair o-f closely spaced parallel side walls 2 which are lconnected by a. narrow bottom 3, said bottom having an opening L bet-Ween its ends, for a purpose to appear.
An open key-ring 5 has both of its ends normally received in one end of the sheath 1 las shown in Fig. 1, one end of said ring being provided with a horizontally projecting shank 6 which is pivoted by a rivet or the like 7 between the side walls 2, at the above-named one end of the sheath. This shank is provided wit-h an integral upstanding projection which constitutes a shoulder 8 facing toward the remote end of the sheath, for a purpose to appear. The ring 5 and the shank 6 are preferably stamped from ya single piece of flat metal and lthe edges 'of the ring may be rounded if desired.
A flat metalarm 9, which is also by preference stamped from a single piece, of metal, is confined normally within the sheath 1, said arm having one end 10 which normally overlies the inner end of the shank 6 and 4abuts the shoulder 8, as seen in Fig. 1, so
as to prevent the ring 5 from. being swung upwardly to the exposed position shown in Fig.I 2. The other end of the arm 9 is pivoted by a transverse rivet or the like 11, between the side walls 2 of the sheath 1; and between its ends said arm is provided with an integral downward projection 12 which normally projects through the opening 4; By pressing upwardly upon vthis projection with the thumb or one finger, the arm 9 is started toward an o-pen position, and the upper edge walls of the sheath 1 are formed with notches 13 which permit the partly opened arm to beeasily gripped so that said arm may be swung to the completely open position shown in Fig. 2. The end 10 of the arm 9 may then be used as -a screw-driver' and the projection 121s of such shape as to permit it. to be usedfor opening bottles. It will furthermzore bejseen that when the arm is swung to an open position, the shank 6 may be outwardly swung to expose the opening of the lieyring 5 so that keys may be applied to or removed from said ring.
lVhen the shank 46 is in the position shown in Fig. l and the arm 9 isswung open, the end of a cigar may be placed in the notches 13 if desired and the arm 9 may be forced sluit so as to eut the tip from the cigar, said arm being provided with a sharpened inner edge 14, for this purpose.
In order to hold the arm 9 in the extended position shown in Fig. 2, I preferably stamp portions of the walls 2 inwardly to provide detents 15 which are receivable in an opening 16 in said arm. If desired, a similar arrangement of detents could be used to hold the arm in theclosed position of Fig. l.
It will be seen from the foregoing that a` very simple and inexpensive construction has been provided, in which the arm 9 normally holds the sheath and the ring 5 in such relative positions as to cause the sheath to close the opening ofthe ring. However, due to the construction employed, the arm 9 may be easily swung to an extended position either to be used as a cigar-cutter, bottle-opener, or screw-driver, or merely to permit swinging of the ring 5 to the position of Fig. 2. It will further be noted that the construction is so slmple .and inexpensive,
that it may well be advantageously used as an effective advertising medium, to be given away by the advertlser.
.one end of said ring Excellent results have been obtained from the details disclosed and they are therefore preferably followed, but within the scope of the invention as claimed, minor changes may of course be made.
I claim v A. device of the class described, comprising an elongated sheath having closely' spaced parallel side walls and a narrow bottom, the latter having an opening between its ends, an open'ringwhose ends are normally received in one end of said sheath,
having a flat horizontally projecting shank pivoted between the side walls of the sheath, said shank being provided with an upstanding shoulder between its ends facing toward the remote end of the sheath, and a fiat arm normally confined between the side walls of the sheath and having one end overlying the aforesaid shank and abutting the shoulder thereof to prevent pivotal movement of said shank, the other end of'said arm being pivoted between the side walls of the sheath to permit-Lne arm to be swung outwardly from said sheath, said arm having an integral lug on its'lower edge projecting through the aforesaid opening in the sheath yybottom to receive pressure for initially swinging the arm toward an open position.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature.
CHAUNCEY ANIAC MURRAY.
