TOBACCO PIPE CASE Original Filed March 2, 1929 /N VEN TOR Patented Nov. 7, 1933 TOBACCO PIPE CASE Y James Burns, Elsas, Ontario, Canada Application March 2, 1929, Serial No. 343,976
Renewed February 20, 1933 2 Claims.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in a tobacco pipe case and has for its primary object the provision of a body cor responding in shape to a pipe stem and part of the bowl thereof constructed in a single section of material so that the pipe stem may be readily inserted therein or removed, as desired.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a tobacco pipe case of the character stated including a cap or cover for the bowl of the pipe constructed in such a manner that it may be readily secured over the pipe bowl and secured on the enlarged end of the body of the case or detached therefrom or removed as desired.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a tobacco pipe case of the character stated in which the cap or cover is constructed in such a manner that it will serve to hold iirmly in position the pipe placed in the case even though the pipe may be somewhat larger or smaller than the average size for which the case is constructed.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a tobacco pipe case of the character stated in which the cap is constructed separate from the body of the case and is held thereon by a strap carried at the back of the case body and removably mounted on the cap and the cap is also adjustably secured in place on the bowl of the pipe by a strap projecting from the cap and adjustably secured in position on the case body so that the pipe is irmly held in place in the case even though the pipe is of a somewhat smaller or larger size than the size for which the case and cap were originally constructed; the cap having means therein for exerting a resilient pressure on the cap of the pipe bowl and thus retaining the pipe rmly against movement in the case.
The invention has for a still further object of the invention, the provision of a tobacco pipe case of the character stated which is composed of the minimum number of parts, is of extremely simple and inexpensive construction and is formed in such a manner that it will hold any one of several sizes and shapes of pipes rmly in place within the case and protect the pipe from dirt and dust as Well as serving as an insulation Afor the pipe.
To the accomplishment of these and related objects as shall become apparent as the description proceeds, my invention resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as shall be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
The invention will be best understood and can be more clearly described, when reference is had to the drawing forming a part of this disclosure, wherein like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
In the drawin'gz- Figure 1 is a perspective of the case and cap therefor; and
Figure 2 is a longitudinal. vertical section through the same and showing the pipe in elevation therein.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, itwill be noted that the case includes a body 6 which is of substantially the shape of a conventional tobacco pipe stem therefor, tapers toward one end, the small end being somewhat rounded and closed, At the large end of the body 6, an upturned extension '7 is provided for receiving the bowl 8 of a conventional tobacco pipe and surrounding a portion thereof, when the pipe stem 9 is positioned in the body 6 of the case. A nger 10 is directedupwardly from the lower krear `side of the extension 7 and provided with an inverted key slot 11 at its upper extremity, the purpose of which will presently appear. A strap guide loop 12 is struck up from the body 6 on the upper side thereoffnear the upturned extension 7 and transversely of the body 6. buckle 13 is carried on a support 14 secured on the upper face of the body 6, a short distance from the loop 12 with the buckle 13 facing the latter. The purpose of the loop 12 and the buckle 13 will presently appear.
A cap or cover 15 is provided for the case andcarries a knob 16 on its upper side, at the centre thereof for removable engagement in the key slot 11, when the cover 15 is in position over the top of the bowl 8 of the tobacco pipe positioned in the case. A strap l'i' is extended from the edge of the cover 15 for engagement through the loop 12 and has a plurality of spaced openings 18, through any one of which the pin of the buckle 13 may be extended when the strap 17 is passed through the buckle 13 after being extended through the loop 12 so as to firmly secure the cover 15 in position on the pipe bowl 8. An expansion helical spring 19 is positioned in the. cover 15 with one end secured to the underfaoe thereof while the other end ofthe spring 19 is secured to the inner face of the bottom of the spring enclosing cup 20 positioned in the cover 15. It will thus be seen that the cup 20 will be resiliently retained in engagement with the open upper side of the tobacco pipe bowl 8 when the cover 15 is iirmly secured in proper position over the tobacco bowl 8.
As the construction of the device has thus been described in detail, brief reference is now had to its use and modus operandi: The selected pipe is inserted in the case at the large end thereof and the pipe stem 9 ymoved -into ithe body 6 of the caseiuntilthe pipe bowl 8 isiin position within the large rear end of the case and the upturned extension 7 thereof. The cap or cover '15 is then placed over the large end of the case, the u pturned extension rI and the tobacco pipe bowl 8, with the knob 16 engaged in the key/slot 1-1Yof the finger 10. The cap or -cover g. 15 Vis then drawn downwardly into position, by insertion of the strap 1'7 through the loop-mand securingthe strap 17 in the buckle 13. This results iin Yirmly pressing the cup 20 into resilient engagement with the open upper end of the tobacco pipe bowl zto cover iover and 'close the same. It is to be understood that AVthe case 'will accommodate any :one of 'anumber Aof tobacco pipes ofA various sizes iand 1shapesiand the lentire body which is preferf .ably fformedof Aa'single section of material, as
'-.well as the cap or cover V15, may 'be produced from leather or otherappropriate material,;and may be either flexible or of firm or rigid convrstructioniaszpreferred. Furthermore, the spring 19 and the cup or pocket 20 therefor, will funcition automatically to ypress on and holdthe ,pipe imposition withinthe case and cap or cover and prevent movement of the pipe within the case ibody andrtheiease cover 15,even thoughthe size :andzshapeof the `pipe may be somewhat different `.from :the gexact size and configuration of pipe for which the -case 'body 6 and cover 15 are specially :adapted The .cover 15 may be readily `removed -by releasing the strap 17 and withdrawing the :same .from the buckle 13 and the loop 412. rIhe co.ver 15 may lbe fthen completely released from :thebo'dy by removing the knob .16 from yengage- .ment with the nger 10.
` lPFrom the foregoing description, taken in conf :nection with the accompanying drawing, it will be manifest :that a tobacco pipe case is provided .that will 'fulilall the necessary lrequirements 'of such adevicejbutas many changes could'be made pipe bowl with a strap closure locking member extending from an edge of the open large end of the body; a closure cap for engagement over the end-of the -pipe bowl and provided with a strap cap 'securing member extended from the edge thereof; said cap having a knob provided 'thereon to receive and hold the strap extended irom the pipe case body; means carried on said pipe case -body to receiveand-hold the strap extendedirom said closureicap; and means carried'vvithin said closure cap to vresiliently press upon the Vtop of `the pipe bowl when closure pipe is secured inigpositionon the bowl of the pipe positioned in the caseibody,
2. .-Avtobacce rpipe case including an elongated.
tapering body with anY angularly cut open large end having a strap extended "from the back portion of the edge thefeon a closure cap orengage- Ament over thetop 'oi the bowl of a tobacco pipe positioned insaid case ibody; a strap extended from `theiedge of'said'closure cap; a guide loop for said last mentioned strap on the case body;
means im said case body 'for attaching said last mentioned strap v,to said-case body and holding said strap iafter passing of the saine through said :guide loop; `an expansie-n springenclosed in said closure cap; `acovering for said expansion spring attached 'to the innerface of said closure cap;
andfmeanscarried on the outer face of said closure cap to receive and hold the first mentioned vstrap and thus -compress vthe said expansion vspring ontotheetopoi the pipe bowl 'with said clo- 'sure cap coveringsaid top of the pipe bowl.
