Description

c. STOLL.
Filling for Walls of lee-Houses.
. Patented Dec. 3,1872.-
y/////////////////////fi UNITED STATES CHARLES STOLL, or BROOKLYN, E. 1)., NEW YORK.
IMP ROVEMENT IN FILLINGS FOR WALLS OF lE-HOUSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,680, dated December 3, 1872.]
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GHARLEs Mom, of Brooklyn, E. 1)., in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Filling for the Walls of Ice-Houses and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawingforming a part of this specification, which drawing represents a vertical section of my invention.
This invention consists in a filling for the walls of ice-houses composed of alternate layers of paper and of felt, laid together so as to break joints in such a manner that by the layers of paper the interspaces between the felt are efieotually closed, and a filling for the walls of ice-houses is obtained which does not settle, which is free from danger by fire, and which efiectually insulates the interior of the ice-house from the external atmosphere.
.In the drawing, the letter A designates the external wall of an ice-house, and the letter B the internal wall, said walls being made of wood or any other suitable material, and placed at such a distance apart that a space, 0, is left between them. This space is generally filled in withcoal-dust or sometimes with sawdust; but these materials have the great disadvantage that they are liable to settle,
thereby leaving portions of the walls unprotected and, furthermore, said materials are dangerousin case of fire. The material which I'use for filling in the space 0 is composed of layers a of paper, which alternate with layers 1) of felt. The paper which I employ by preference is stout unsized paper, and I arrange the several layers in relation to each other so as to break joints. By combining alternate layers of paper with layers of felt all the crevicesor interspaces which may occur in or between the layers of felt are efiectually closed and a filling is obtained which is not liable to settle and which perfectly insulates the interior of the ice-house from the influence of the external atmosphere.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A filling for the walls of ice-houses, composed of alternate layers of paper and felt, as shown and described.
. CHARLES STOLL.
