Description

A. HENDERSON.
NAPKIN HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED AUG-27.1919.
Patented Apr. 13, 1920.
UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT HENDERSON, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
NAPKIN-HOLDER.
Application filed August 27, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT HENDERSON, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Napkin- Holders, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to napkin holders and particularly to a device of this class designed to detachably support a naplnn of any kind or class and by means of which said napkin may be supported upon the chest of the user and be held in an approximately flat or extended position; a further, object being to provide a holder of the class specified which will not interfere in any way with the use of the napkin, and which may be folded in connection with the napkin, if desired, when placing the napkin upon the table prior to using the same; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in a device of the class and for the purpose specified, constructed and operated as hereinafter described.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms apart, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a front view of the device indicating a napkin connected therewith and showing the side portions of the device in an extended position; and,
Fig. 2 a view looking in the direction of the arrow 2 of Fig. 1 but showing a part of a napkin in section.
In practice, I provide a napln'n holder 5, which is preferably made from a strip or rod of spring material bent to form an arcshaped cross head 6 and approximately parallel sides 7 and 8, the end portions of which are bent to form inwardly and downwardly curved portions 9 and 10.
Secured to the sides 7 and 8 adjacent to the curved end portions 9 and 10 are spring members 11 and 12, .each of which consists Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 13, 1920.
Serial No. 320,111.
of a sleeve portion 13 which passes around the sides 7 and 8 of the holder 5, and is secured thereto, and formed integral with the sleeves 13 are spring fingers 1 1 preferably of the form shown in Fig. 2, and the end portions 15 of which are adapted to operate in connection with the sides 7 and S of the holder 5 to securely grasp one edge portion of a napkin 16 therebetween.
In the use of the device the holder 5 may be first placed around the neck of the user by springing the sides 7 and 8 out- 'wardly in the manner illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 1 to permit the passage of the neck of the user between the curved end portions 9 and 10, after which the sides 7 and 8 are again returned to their normal position by the spring action of the holder and the napkin 16, or one edge portion thereof, is then passed over the arc-shaped cross head 6 and beneath the spring fingers 1 1 in the manner illustrated in Fig. 2. hen the napkin has been secured in position, as above set out, it will beseen that the same will be held in an approximately fiat or fully extended position and will thus cover the entire chest portion of the user and yet permit the use of the free or downwardly directed side portion of the napkin for the purpose of wiping the hands or the mouth, whenever desired, as isusually the custom.
It will also be apparent that the nakpin 16 may be first connected with the holder 5 and may be folded in connection therewith prior to the use of the napkin, and when it is desired to use the same, the napkin may be unfolded and extended with the holder 5 in connection therewith and said holder placed around the neck of the user in the manner hereinbefore set out. In the use of the device the downwardly curved portions 9 and 10 fit over the shoulders.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A napkin holder of the class described comprising an approximately U shaped frame composed of a plain and unobstructed strip of spring material bent to form an arc-shaped cross head, parallel sides and inwardly and backwardly curved end porpresence of the subscribing Witnesses this tions, and spring clip devices on the sides 25th day of August 1919.
of said holder adjacent to the curved end portions thereof substantially as shown and ALBERT HENDERSON described. Witnesses:
In testimony that I claim the foregoing G. E. MULREANY,
as my invention I have signed my name in H. E. THOMPSON.
