Description

Safety-Hooks for Watches. v N 133 42. Patented Dec.3,1872..
I \Wmwgmfi V Y hwmkms. Y6) ZZM/ K 2 5576/ *4 25 filkw/ My ivrrnn STATES- PATENT EDWARD O. HARRIS AND FERDINAND IMHORST, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT m SAFETY-HOOKS FOR WATCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,642, dated December 3, 1872.
' and we do hereby declare the followingto be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which drawing.
Figure 1 represents a sectional side view of our safety-hook as applied to a watch when the same is set for operation; Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same when thrown back in its guard: Fig. 3 isa front view of the same; Fig. 4 is a sectional side view of our safetyhook, as applied to a pocket-book, when set for operation; Fig. 5 is a similar view of the same when thrown back in its guard, and Fig. 6 is a front view of the same.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts,
This invention consists in a sharp -pointed book, which is'connected to aswivel, by which the same can be attached to a watch, pocket- A book, or other article,-and which hook is com{ bined witha guard, into which it can be thrown,
either by the motion of a slide acting on thehook,
3 of the drawing, the letter A designates our safety-hook, which is made of an elastic strip of steel or other suitable material, and attached to a supporting-plate, B, the outer end of which is curled to form a guard, G, for the 1 book. VViththe supporting-plate B is com-v bined a swivel, D, of any desired construction,
which maybe provided with a ring to receive the ring or bow of a watch or other article of a similar nature, or to be attached to the neck of the watch, as shown in Fig. 1. The point/ of the hook is sharp-pointed, and on the supporting-plate slides a ring, a, which embraces the shank of the hook A. If this ring is moved back to the position shown in Fig. 1 the point of the hook projects beyond the guard, and if the Watch or other article is placed into a pocket and an attempt made to withdraw the same the hook catches in the lining of the pocket and retains the watch or other article. By moving the ring a forward to the position shown in Fig. 2 the hook is thrown out of operation, and the watch or other article to which the same is attached can be withdrawn from the pocket without obstruction. 1
Instead of fastening the guard 0 directly to the supporting-plate B, as shown in Figs. 1,2, and 3, our device may also be constructed as shown in Figs. 4, 5, and 6. In these figures,
the letter A designates a spring-hook, composed of a strip of sheetsteel or other suitable material, which is doubled up,as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, and passed through the guard 0, one end of the strip forming the supporting-plate B and the other the hook. By pulling this supporting-plate out to the position shown in Fig. 4 the hook is liberated, and by pushing the supporting-plate back to the position shown in Figs. 5 and 6 the hook is concealed within the guard O. Said guard is secured to a bracket, which is so con structed that it can be readily fastened to a pocket-book or other device or article, and the connection between the guard and bracket is by preferenceeof such a nature that the guard can swivel freely in either direction.
If the spring-hook is brought in the position shown in Fig. 4 and an attempt is made to withdraw the pocket-book or other article to which our device is attached from the pocket, the point of the hook catches in the is brought in the position shown in Figs. 5
and 6 its point is concealed within the guard whole to swatch, pocket-book, or other art-i- G, and the pocket-book or other article can cle, substantially in the manner herein shown be withdrawn from the pocket without oband described.
struction. EDW'ARD G. HARRIS.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure FERDINAND IMHORST. by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of a safety-hoek, a sup- Witnesses: porting-plate, and a guard. with each other W. HAUFF, and with a fastening device for attaching the E. F. KASTENHUBER.
